The difference was most clearly stated by Ruediger Simon:
STRATIFICATION: a brief cold-treatment (few days) of water soaked seeds to
break seed dormancy, results in an even germination.
VERNALIZATION: a longer cold-treatment (several weeks) of seedlings or
young plants which promotes flowering.
My confusion related to the mistaken use of the term VERNALIZATION in my
postdoc lab, when STRATIFICATION was what we were actually doing to promote
germination of arabidopsis and tobacco.
