Subject: circulation in lower animals

Hello everybody,

I am an Austrian human physiologists looking for an answer to special
questions. Does anyone possibly know some specialist for circulation in
lower animals who could answer the following questions:

1 when in evolution valves where introduced in the circulation?

2 are there animals without valves and without peristaltic pumping and how
does the blood flow work in these cases?

The reason for this questions is, that we came across a physical principle
which would allow unidirectional flow in the circulation even without
valves. Our hypothesis is, that valves were introduced later in the
evolution, and this principle, not relying on valves, was first.

If you could forward this email to someone who could possibly add some
references, this would be really helpful.

Please send possible answers also to my personal adress, as I am not a
member of this list!!!

Thanks a lot in advance and best regards,

Max Moser

Dear colleagues,

I am trying to find information on the benthic communities of the Argentine
continental shelf, particularly the area north of the Falkland Islands between
approximately 51 degrees South and 48 degrees South, although the wider shelf
area is also of interest.

Can any polychaetologists put me in touch with individuals or groups who have
been involved with surveying this area during the past five years or so? I
would also be interested to receive any opinions from ANNELIDA readers on the
status of taxonomic and ecological knowledge of this fauna.

Subject: Boccardia polybranchia in Europe

Dear Boccardiaphiles, spionid watchers, and ecologists,

It is a speculation of mine, and perhaps I'm not alone in this, that
Boccardia polybranchia sensu Carazzi might have been an immigrant species
from the southern hemisphere. If so, there do not appear to be sufficient
new European reports of it (subsequent to Carazzi's 1893 Naples occurrence
and Mesnil's 1896 northern French coast occurrences (these records
repeated by others)) to indicate the species has survived and thrives
today. It was quite common at least at Naples.

Tell me it ain't so! It must be there! Show me the refs I've overlooked.
Tell me the little darling occurs densely today in your patch of water.
And please send me some examples.

Seriously, I'd be interested in borrowing for a very short period any
extant preserved material from Naples, the Med, France, UK and
neighbours.

(I am aware of putative modern check-list records by Ben-Eliahu (1976),
Campoy (1979), and Fassari (1982). Any other ecological refs from the
region?)

Thanks for your help,

Subject: Australian Polychaeta: taxonomy via www and DELTA

Dear annelid list subscribers

This message is to alert you to the existence of web pages describing a
project to produce interactive identification tools for southern
Australian polychaetes. This project has been underway for about 2 years
and the web pages have been created to publicise the project and
especially to solicit constructive critical comment. The URL for this
site is http://www.mov.vic.gov.au/poly and I hope many of you will find
the time to have a look and learn a little about the project. As well as
introductory pages explaining the aims of the project and principal
researchers, visitors to the site will find:

Introductions to many (not yet all) polychaete families, with summary
information about diversity, taxonomic status etc in an Australian context.

Examples (for 3 families at present, Capitellidae, Nephtyidae and
Opheliidae) of character and taxon descriptions. (These files were
generated by data files in the DELTA system. See links on the web site
to learn more about DELTA, which is a DEscriptive Language for TAxonomy
using a suite of programs developed by CSIRO in Australia.)

Compressed .zip files which may be downloaded and enable interactive
identification using the the DELTA program Intkey (at present only
possible for 2 families, Capitellidae and Nephtyidae). The
DELTA program Intkey must be installed first, but these are shareware
programs available from the the DELTA site (http://www.keil.ukans.edu/delta/).

Non-Australians should be aware that although this project does focus on
Australian species (and is mostly directed at soft-sediment taxa from
southern Australia), the Capitellidae DELTA treatment does allow either
"Australian species" or "World genera" to be selected at the start of an
identification. Thus this database should be useful, if only at genus
level, worldwide. Many other family treatments to be posted to this site
over the next weeks and months will also allow genus identifications and
include most or hopefully all all known genera.

One limitation of this project and web site (one of many!) is that it
assumes that users are already able to make family-level
identifications. Another limitation is that interactive identifications
cannot be performed directly from your web browser; you must download and
expand the .zip files and install Intkey on your PC. However, text
descriptions of character states and of genera and species can be read
from a web browser.

Feedback, and constructive criticism, especially from taxonomists
with experience in the families for which data are already presented,
and from users who try the interactive identification files.
Although I do not consider any of the data presented at this site to be
complete (e.g. many character states and taxa still lack illustrations),
nevertheless some level of assessment of the values of this information
should now be possible.

Comments that may be of general interest should be posted to this list,
although the web pages support email links to me and to co-inestigators
and collaborators as appropriate for each family. This project is not
mine alone; Dr Pat Hutchings at the Australian Museum is a major
contributor, and others are contributing to individual families.

Please keep an eye on the web pages, as the content will improve and
become more comprehensive over the coming weeks and months. Major
improvements, such as addition of new family treatments, will be
advertised by a message to this list. Minor corrections and improvements
(such as those in response to the comments I am now expecting!) will be
incorporated quickly and regularly.

I look forward to your comments!

bye

Robin

Dear Andrew, dear all,

Obviously, this is not my field, and I suggest you contact Eve Southward or
Steve Gardiner. However, here is where to start:

Siphonobrachia ilyophora:

Nielsen, C. 1965. Four new species of Pogonophora from the Atlantic Ocean
off Southern Florida. Bull Mar Sci, 15: 964-986. (Description of

Gupta, B.L., Little, C. 1969. Studies on Pogonophora II. Ultrastructure of
the tentacular crown of Siphonobrachia. J Mar Biol Assoc UK, 49: 717-741.

Southward, E.C. 1971. Pogonophora of the Northwest Atlantic: Nova Scotia to
Florida. Smithson Contrib Zool, 88: 1-29.

Siphonobrachia lauensis:

Southward, E.C. 1991. Three new species of Pogonophora, including two
vestimentiferans, from hydrothermal sites in the Lau Back-arc Basin
(Southwest Pacific Ocean). J Nat Hist, 25: 859-881.

Desbruyeres, D. et al. 1994. Deep-sea hydrothermal communities in
Southwestern Pacific back-arc basins (the North-Fiji and Lau Basins):
composition, microdistribution and food web. Mar Geol, 116: 227-242.

See also:

Southward, E.C. 1993. Pogonophora. In: Microscopic anatomy of invertebrates,
vol. 12: 327-369.

I think that's it. To my knowledge (the specialists will confirm) there are
only 2 species, only one of which occurring near hydrothermal vents. Now,
does that make it an "endemic to hydrothermal vents"? I would be very careful...

Good luck,

Pierre

Is this an automated enquiry system???
Since the genus Thermanemertes (not Thermanermertes) has just recently been
created for the hydrothermal-vent species T. valens, this is so far the only
record...

Two postdoc openings in my lab, starting in summer 1997.

1). Major duty of this postdoc will be involving in screening non-toxic
marine natural compounds for antifouling purpose or medical
applications. Therefore, the candidates should have some basic
training in larval ecology or chemical ecology of marine invertebrates.
The candidate is expected to team up with one of existing postdoc who
has Ph.D. degree in natural product chemistry from Germany.

For your curiosity, this university has just initiated a new program
in exploration and application of marine natural products. In the
working team, there are 9 faculty from three departments (biology,
Chemistry, and biochemistry). At this moment, we are very much
interested in compounds from ocean that can be used for medical purpose
or antifouling purpose. This university has also developed a very
strong progrom on Traditional Chinese Medician (screening the compounds
from Chinese herb medician).

2). Major duty of this postdoc will be involving in determining the
relationship between flow dynamics and larval settlement in a closed
system. Thus, the ideal candidate shall have trainings in biomechanics
or biophysics or larval biology.

For your information, at this moment, my lab has 3 postdoc (1 from
Germany, 1 from Canada, 1 from China), 4 graduate students (from
local), 2 RAs (1 from Canada, 1 from Hong Kong), 1 technician (from
Canada), 3 visiting professors (1 from USA, 2 from China), and 2 UG
students for their thesis research. The lab is fully equiped for
larval biology research and for screening natural compounds (my
department has 5 HPLC, 2 GC, 1 FPLC, and Mass). We also have a small
indoor seawater system (13 metric tonns of seawater) and several
biological incubators for algal or larval cultures.

As English is the official language in working environment and thus, we
perfer to have candidates who are fluent in English. The current
salary for postdoc with some working experience is HK$23,750 per month.
Medical benifit will also be provided. The appointment will be for one
year but with the second year renewable, pending on performance and
funding situation.

For those who are interested in these positions, please send me a copy
of your C.V. by e-mail or fax no later than May 30, 1997. If
shortlisted, you will be requested to provide two reference letters.

Thank you for your attention.

Subject: Re: Help with five polychaete genera

Hesiocaeca is a hesionid. The genus was described by Hartman, O. (1965)
Deep-water benthic polychaetous annelids off New England to Bermuda ....
Allan Hancock Foundation Publications, Occassional paper 28: 1-378 with
type species H. bermudensis. Since then another species in the genus has
been described from the Marianas by Blake JA (1991). A new species of
Hesiocaeca from hydrothermal vents .... Porc. Biol. Soc. Wash. 104(1):
175-180.

Orseis is also a hesionid, but probably an invalid genus because the
description appears to be based on a juvenile specimen (unpub. view). The
genus was described by Ehlers, E. (1864). Die
borstenwurmer nach systematischen und anatomischen untersuchungen
dargestellt. Leipzig, Wilhelm Engelmann 748 pp, with type species O.
pulla from the northern Adriatic.
There are several described species in the genus but in my view most
are either juvenile hesionids or belong to the Syllidae. Let me know if
you need these references too.

That might indeed not be the most reliable and exhaustive compilation.
Compare with the case of supraspecific taxa of molluscs (other than
Cephalopoda): a high amount of these (of the order of 30 percent) escaped
registration by the Zool. Rec. during the last decades. See references

Subject: BIOSCI/bionet miniFAQ & Fundraiser

(LAST REVISION: 30-JUL-95)

This BIOSCI "miniFAQ" is designed to answer the questions that come up
the *most frequently*. The main BIOSCI FAQ (Frequently Asked
Questions) is accessible on the World Wide Web at URL
http://www.bio.net/.

If you can not find an answer to your question in this or other
documentation, the BIOSCI technical support staff answers e-mail
queries sent to

		       biosci-help@net.bio.net

We can only answer questions about the use of the newsgroups and
mailing lists. We unfortunately do not have the staff to do Internet
information searches or answer scientific questions. Please post
those to the appropriate BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups.

0) BIOSCI NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!!
------------------------------
BIOSCI's government funding has been expended, and we are now
operating solely from advertising revenue that we have raised from our
Web site at http://www.bio.net/. We need just a few minutes of your
time to help us serve you.

You can do two important things which will take very little time for
you individually and will immensely help us continue to help you.

First, please use our WWW system at http://www.bio.net/ to access the
archives. You can post or reply to messages via your Web browser as
described in item #1 below. Your usage helps attract sponsors. If you
contact any of our sponsors, please be sure to thank them for
supporting BIOSCI. It is critical for them to get this feedback if
they are to continue their sponsorship for the long term.

Second, if you work for a company or organization that provides
products or services of interest to the biology community, please pass
this message on to your marketing or marketing communications
department or other appropriate group. Please ask them to help
support BIOSCI by sponsoring our Web site and explain the uses and
benefits of the system to the biology community. If they are
interested, they can then contact us for further information at our
tech support address, biosci-help@net.bio.net.

1) Using the WWW to access the BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups.
--------------------------------------------------------
As of 10 December 1995, all BIOSCI/bionet full newsgroups are
accessible through the World Wide Web (WWW) at URL http://www.bio.net.
One can read and reply publicly or privately to both recent postings
and archived messages through one's Web browser if it is configured
properly to send e-mail. Each newsgroup is equipped with its own WAIS
index. The main BIOSCI home page also has access to the BIO-JOURNALS
Table of Contents database WAIS index and the BIOSCI user address
database described in another item further below.

2) What to do about "spams," i.e., junk mail, ads, etc.
-------------------------------------------------------
BIOSCI is a set of parallel USENET newsgroups (the "bionet" groups),
mailing lists, and a hypermail archive at URL http://www.bio.net/.
The same postings are distributed on all media (except for a small
number of mailing-list-only groups at net.bio.net). Unfortunately it
is becoming a despicable practice on the Internet (by a few people out
to make a fast buck) to do automated mass postings to thousands of
newsgroups and mailing lists. These attempts to grab free advertising
are refered to as "spams" in the usual, somewhat boneheaded, net
terminology. USENET is more susceptible to this practice, and many
spams originate on the USENET groups and then are passed on to the
mailing lists. However, spammers also get lists of mailing addresses
and hit these too, so neither medium is immune.

What should you do personally if you get junk mail?
---------------------------------------------------
Just delete it and move on without reading it further. Filing a
protest is becoming increasingly useless because spammers are often
disguising the addresses where the messages are sent from. Unless you
really understand Internet mail systems, your attempt at protest by
sending replies to the message will often end up being sent to the
address of an innocent person that the spammer is victimizing.

What can BIOSCI/bionet do to protect its newsgroups?
----------------------------------------------------
The only solution currently available is to moderate the newsgroup.
If this newsgroup is already moderated, then you are in good shape.
Moderation protects the USENET distribution from about 95% of the
spams that are being sent to date and protects the mailing lists
completely. Moderation means, however, that someone has to take the
time to review each message before it goes out. We have set up
software here that simply allows the moderator to forward to an
address at net.bio.net messages that (s)he wishes to have distributed.
This takes no more time than that needed to read the message and pass
it on, say about 1 min. per message.

Most newsgroups currently have a discussion leader who is responsible
for their newsgroup. The discussions leaders and their e-mail
addresses are listed in the BIOSCI Information Sheet which is
available on the Web at http://www.bio.net/. If a newsgroup is being
hit with too many junk postings, please contact the discussion leader
for that group and see if there is interest in moderating the group.
Please do not assume that by simply posting a complaint to the
newsgroup itself, anyone on the BIOSCI staff will act on your
complaint. With close to 100 newsgroups to run, the BIOSCI staff has
to rely on the discussion leaders of each newsgroup to report problems
directly to us at biosci-help@net.bio.net.

We will moderate any of our newsgroups if the discussion leader tells
us that the readership of the group wishes to do so and if a moderator
is willing to do the work. For most BIOSCI/bionet groups, this
entails only a few minutes of work each day.

Moderating a newsgroup will resolve probably 95% of the junk postings
on the USENET distribution. Unfortunately there are easy ways for
determined spammers to override the moderation mechanism on USENET,
but we can protect our e-mail subscribers from unwanted postings if
the newsgroup is moderated. You can also access our newsgroups over
the WWW at URL http://www.bio.net. While this Web interface will not
stop spammers from trying to post to the groups, this will give you
yet another way, besides using USENET news, to keep the junk out of
your personal mail files. For those of you with local USENET news
systems, the Web interface will also give you faster access to new
newsgroups and recent postings.

3) Examples of subscribing and unsubscribing to the mailing lists.
------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE NOTE: The BIOSCI management does NOT act on
subscription/unsubscription requests that are posted improperly to the
newsgroups and mailing lists. People who do this only bother everyone
on the lists to no avail. Please be sure to follow the proper
procedures below.

Gory details are in the BIOSCI Information sheets on the Web at
http://www.bio.net. Below we give an example utilizing the
METHODS-AND-REAGENTS list at both of our two BIOSCI sites:

Users in the Americas and Pacific Rim countries who use the BIOSCI
------------------------------------------------------------------
node at computer net.bio.net:
----------------------------

A) Determine the "listname" which is the <=8 character mail address
                                         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
for the group. These can be found in the BIOSCI Info. Sheet. For
the METHODS-AND-REAGENTS group the mailing address is
methods@net.bio.net. The listname is the portion of the address to
the left of the @ sign, i.e., "methods". The listname is used with
the "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" commands illustrated below.

B) Mail all commands in the body of a mail message addressed to
biosci-server@net.bio.net. Do NOT send commands to the newsgroup
posting addresses! Leave the Subject: line blank, any text on it
   will be ignored.

C) In the body of your message put one or more of the following
commands with an "end" command on the last line, e.g.,

   subscribe methods
   unsubscribe methods
   end

Do NOT put your e-mail address or other text on these lines. The
server only allows you to cancel your subscription if the address
on your mail header matches the address on our mailing list.
Please ask for help at biosci-help@net.bio.net if your address has
changed, e.g., if you know you are on the list but the server tells
you that you are not a member.

Users in Europe, Africa, and Central Asia who use the BIOSCI node at
--------------------------------------------------------------------
computer daresbury.ac.uk (also known as dl.ac.uk):
-------------------------------------------------

To subscribe and unsubscribe to/from the BIOSCI lists, you need to
specify the full USENET newsgroup name with "bionet-news." prepended.
The USENET newsgroup names are listed in the BIOSCI Information sheet
on the Web at http://www.bio.net/. For the METHODS-AND-REAGENTS list
the USENET newsgroup name is bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts, thus the
appropriate commands are

    sub bionet-news.bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts

    unsub bionet-news.bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts

These commands are included in a message addressed to mxt@dl.ac.uk,
NOT to the newsgroup mailing addresses. As usual, include the text in
the body of the message as text on the Subject: line is ignored.

To unsubscribe from all the lists at the UK node, use

    unsub bionet-news

Please note that if the address in the list is different than the one
in your mail message header, you will not be able to unsubscribe by
this method. If you have problems, please mail biosci@daresbury.ac.uk.

4) The BIOSCI user address and research interest directory.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please take this opportunity to add your name, address, and research
interest information to the BIOSCI User Address Database if you have
not already done so.

You can fill out the address form directly through our Web page at URL
http://www.bio.net/adrform.html.

The address database is reindexed nightly for WWW access (the URL is
http://www.bio.net/). If you are not directly on the Internet but can
reach it by e-mail, please use our waismail server to access the user
directory. waismail use is described above. You can also request a
user address form by e-mail from biosci-help@net.bio.net.

Please check your database entry from time-to-time to see if your
address information is still up-to-date. Because of our limited
personnel resources, we ask that you resubmit a *complete* form to
revise your entry; we only replace complete entries and do not have
resources to edit old forms.

				Dave Kristofferson

Subject: IMPORTANT - BIOSCI moving to Stanford!

After more than a decade of serving the biology community on the
BIOSCI project, I have decided that it is time for me to pass the
torch. The demands of my career and family are making it increasingly
difficult for me to run BIOSCI adequately on a part-time basis, and
I've decided that I would do the project more harm than good by
clinging to it.

Therefore I have concluded an agreement with the Stanford University
Libraries to take over the management of the BIOSCI project effective
6 June 1997. Many of you know the work of the Stanford Libraries
through HighWire Press which has done an excellent job bringing the
Journal of Biological Chemistry, Science Magazine, and other
prestigious journals to the WWW (see http://highwire.stanford.edu/).
I have every confidence that Stanford will provide an environment
where the BIOSCI project can flourish. The BIOSCI team at Daresbury
will continue to support the project in Europe, and Dave Mack and
Julie Lawrence on the current BIOSCI staff will continue to assist the
new team at Stanford.

The project will be managed by Serge Taylor of the Stanford Libraries
who is responsible for developing Web-based "knowledge environments"
for scientists. I will still participate with the project in an
advisory capacity but have to phase myself out of day-to-day
operations. Many of you who read bionet.announce,
bionet.biology.computational, and bionet.jobs.offered (the groups that
I moderate) have been aware of the recent posting delays that my busy
schedule has inflicted on those newsgroups. I am pleased to announce
that Todd McGee, Scientific Advisor of the HighWire Press, will be
taking over moderation of those groups from me this week.

** NOTE ** - The BIOSCI hardware will be down for backups on 6 June
and will be moved over the weekend of June 7 and 8. We will be
changing the IP number of the machine, but the host name and all
mailing addresses will remain unchanged. There may be a few days of
service disruption during this time due to the move unfortunately,
just as we experienced in BIOSCI's previous move. We hope to keep
this to a minimum. We will post status reports on the move to
bionet.announce before and after it happens. Please watch that
newsgroup for details.

It has been a pleasure serving all of you since the "early days" of
biology on the Internet. I've had the pleasure of not only "knowing"
many of you over the Internet, but have also met literally thousands
of biologists around the U.S. and elsewhere during the many Internet
training seminars that I gave over the last decade. I've been truly
fortunate to have been given the chance to play a role in the growth
of biology on the Internet. This is something I will always treasure.

				Sincerely,

				Dave Kristofferson

This is just to say thank you for all your efforts. BIOSCI has been a
most helpful tool for thousands of scientists all over the world.

[I've forwarded this to Dave, and I'd also like to express my gratitude
for a really superb service -- he's done a tremendous amount of work and
a lot of it has been unpaid and in his spare time. A thorough
professional. We are very lucky to be able to have the facilities that
Annelida list has. Long may it continue. And as far as I know at the
moment there will be no changes in the way we operate (fingers crossed).

Subject: update to DELTA polychaeta web pages

Dear annelida subscribers

Some weeks ago I posted a notice to the list about a web site with
information about a project to produce DELTA taxonomic databases and
on-line taxonomic descriptions of southern Australian polychaetes.

We have just updated parts of the web site. New features are an Intkey
identification package (for DELTA Intkey users) to allow identification
of Opheliidae. Southern Australian species and world genera are
included, as are some figures of selected taxa and characters. The opheliid
taxonomic database is the work of research assistant and html wizard Joanne
Taylor, and me. As I mentioned in the previous post, each family
database will have separate authorship.

The other improvement is that the web pages now use frames. This allows
easier scrolling and navigation within each "box", but earlier browsers
may not cope. If this causes anyone problems please say so, but there is
no reason not to download a new version of your current browser (or
another one) that will allow this and many other web pages to be viewed.

One of the main reasons for providing this information on the web is to
solicit feedback. But there has been very little so far. All of us
would much appreciate constructive comments, even if just to say you have
downloaded a .zip file and it works OK.

bye

Robin
