Newsgroup Charter and Moderation Policy:

EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered is to be used for the posting of job
openings in the biological sciences or professional level jobs that
support the work of biological scientists (such as for
computer/systems programming/support). Jobs in both the non-profit
and for-profit sectors may be posted without format restrictions.
For-profit jobs, however, must be for professional level positions
that support biology research or that require the hiring of someone
with biological expertise, i.e., routine administrative jobs in
commercial companies, e.g., secretarial positions at biotech
companies, will not be posted in this forum and should instead be sent
to misc.jobs.offered.

PLEASE BE SURE to use descriptive Subject: lines in your job postings.
It also helps to start with the abbreviated job location using the
country code and possibly the state/province, e.g.,

Subject: US/CA Postdoctoral postion in XXX

indicating that the job is in the United States/California. Subject
lines like "Job Opening" do not attract readers to your ad!!

Resumes will not be posted on bionet.jobs.offered. Such postings
should be directed to bionet.jobs.wanted.

			     IMPORTANT!!
Because of the volume of posts to this newsgroup, the moderator will
assume that the readers are familiar with the policy as stated in this
newsgroup charter and will reject without comment any messages that do
not follow the guidelines above. Appeals may be sent to
biosci-help@net.bio.net if one thinks that a posting was incorrectly
omitted. Misdirected resumes will be deleted without comment. It is
the responsibility of the posters, not the moderator, to read the
newsgroup usage instructions for bionet.jobs.wanted and
bionet.jobs.offered.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER - The moderator does not check the content or
accuracy of EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered job ads and makes no
warranty, expressed or implied, about the truthfulness or accuracy of
the job descriptions posted on this newsgroup. The moderator's sole
function is to filter out messages that do not appear to conform to
the newsgroup charter above and distribute messages that do appear to
conform to the newsgroup charter. Readers assume all responsibility
for confirming on their own the accuracy of the job descriptions
posted to the newsgroup.

Post-doctoral fellowship in the Phila. area.
The laboratory of David Wiest at the Fox Chase Cancer Center invites
applicants for a post-doctoral position. Our overall goal is to
understand how changes in the function of the endoplasmic reticulum
during thymocyte development can regulate both expression and function
of the T cell antigen receptor (TCR) complex and as a result have
profound effects on T cell development. Particular research interests
include understanding: 1) the mechanism whereby immature thymocytes
determine if the TCRb locus has rearranged properly; 2) how thymocytes
distinguish positive from negative selection signals; 3) how TCR
expression is controlled during development by trans-acting factors in
the endoplasmic reticulum; and 4) the role of tyrosine kinases in
regulating protein transport. I seek candidates that are bright and
motivated. While experience in molecular biology and an understanding of
both immunology and cell biology would be preferred, they are not
essential. This position is available immediately. Interested
applicants should send their CV as well as the names of three references

Senior Financial and Corporate Development Executive
Chief Financial Officer

Our company has been retained to find an experienced finance officer for a
dynamic young company in the upper midwest. This firm, a $60 million
supplier of tools for the biotechnology industry, has achieved
profitability and is experiencing rapid growth. The executive we seek for
this job will have a critical role reporting to the founder and CEO, with
elements of both a traditional CFO post as well as many areas of
involvement in corporate development and operations.

Our CFO would be a key element of a group of senior executives that is
doing international or multi-company Joint Ventures and providing input
and leadership on the financial side. Therefore, a significant experience
in creative business relationships and the variations of financings that
are synonymous with biotechnology would be important.

The requirements include 8-10 years of financial management experience
from the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or high-tech industries. Specific
industry relevance is not as important as the ability to integrate well
into a heavily R & D-oriented environment.

Desired Traits

Communication skills - The ability to work well with a company that
manages key projects and product development in a matrix management
process. This means being one part of a 3-4 person key management team on
all projects, and not having the glory of "taking it over the finish
line." Instead, the team takes it over the finish line.

Financial acumen - Strong knowledge of the finance markets, both from the
SEC side and the private deal-making that is prevalent in the biotech and
high-tech industries. If not from the biotech environment, this CFO must
have an ability to find out "who's who and where they are in biotech."

Management ability - There are fewer direct reports for senior executives
in this company, and more involvement in cross-departmental team efforts -
either as a team leader, mentor, or participant. This manager will have
the current finance manager and controller reporting to him or her. As
stated earlier, just as important as the ability to "motivate the troops"
is the ability to work well with staff of all levels and through a variety
of relationships.

This position represents an excellent opportunity for a broad-minded
financial executive to make an impact upon a growth company at a critical
stage of their development. Our client is aggressively recruiting,
including a competitive compensation package with an opportunity for
equity.

GENE THERAPY AND MOLECUALR GENETICS OF HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELLS

Guy Sauvageau, M.D., Ph.D., FRCP(C)

Institut de Recherche Clinique de Montreal (IRCM)

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Project description:

(description en francais)

Our laboratory explores the hypothesis that transcription factors which
control proliferation and differentiation of embryonic
tissues may also regulate these processes in normal and possibly
abnormal (e.g. leukemic, etc.) hematopoiesis. The following
objectives are being persued in our laboratory:

1.to study the function of selected transcription factors whose
expression is restricted to primitive hematopoietic stem
     cells,
2.to use these genes in order to manipulate the behaviour of
hematopoietic stem cells and,
3.to identify and develop novel strategies to optimize gene transfer
to these cells.

These goals are being addressed by using different experimental
strategies such as experimental bone marrow traplantation
procedures (murine model), retroviral gene transfer, generation of cDNA
library starting from a single cell, in vitro
differentioation of embryonic stem (ES) cells and generation of
transgenic and knock mice.

GENETIQUE MOLEDULAIRE DES CELLULES SOUCHES HEMOPOIETIQUES ET
THERAPIE GENIQUE

Guy Sauvageau, M.D., Ph.D., FRCP(C)

transgéniques et "knock out".

Senior Executive, Sales and Marketing
Instrumentation for Accelerated Drug Discovery

Our search firm has been retained to find a senior executive to manage all
sales and marketing activities for a fast growing biotech instrumentation
company located in the south bay area of San Francisco. This company has
developed a unique reputation in the Accelerated Drug Discovery and
Advanced Diagnostics market sectors, by custom-designing and manufacturing
instruments for life sciences applications. Since 1988, the firm has been
building a proprietary bank of technology in a number of niches which can
be applied in OEM development work for partner companies all over the
world, as well as in developing company's own brand-name products.

The executive we seek will come from a background of sales, marketing, and
strategic planning preferably with prior experience in the area of drug
development. Because this company has developed specific modules that can
be applied to any number of industry niches, one of the major objectives
of this newly created position will be to study the market sectors,
provide accurate market research information, and launch the marketing
efforts required to succeed in each of these niches. One of the company's
major successes in the last year has been in the development of
instrumentation for Accelerated Drug Discovery. This market sector will be
a major focus early-on for the marketing and sales effort.

Responsibilities of the position will include:

* Identify new brand-name products and markets by auditing the company's
existing proprietary bank of technology and its applications. This senior
executive will work closely with engineering teams to define these
products and their requirements.

* Identifying new OEM partnerships and successfully negotiating profitable
contracts.

* Strengthening relationships with current OEM partner companies in order
to extend and expand current projects.

* Close cooperation with project managers to see that customer
requirements are being met.

* Functioning as the primary contact in setting up new collaborations, OEM
partnerships (including contract negotiations) in a manner that will free
up the company President while still allowing him to become active if
necessary in the later stages of the discussion.

* Assist the company President in financing campaign and investor
relationship process.

* Collaborating with the company President on the development of the
company's strategic plan.

* Managing the Advertising, Promotional, and Public Relations programs.

The requirements for this position (title flexible upon qualifications; VP
or Director level) would include an advanced degree in the life sciences
(preferred) as well as 7-10 years (minimum) of selling, marketing, and
strategic experience in a life sciences industry sector (Accelerated Drug
Discovery, Research Instrumentation, Advanced Diagnostics, etc.).

Because of the nature of this unique selling process (focus on
relationships, long lead times, extensive negotiations, customized
technology, etc.) it would be more appropriate for a candidate to come
>From a business development position of this sort as opposed to marketing
an "off the shelf" product line.

There is a huge potential for both personal and company growth, as this
company has already achieved profitability and is currently undergoing
additional financing that will aid future prospects -- allowing the
company to expand into new markets and technologies. A recent major
newspaper featured the firm on the front page of the business section,
>From which we quote: "[This Client] is successful because it underpromises
and overperforms and has always put top priority on speeding products to
market. They are constantly learning and adapting, which is why they're
preparing to make the transition from custom development work to the
manufacture of their own brand-name products."

Fellow Researchers,

It has been several months since the Div. of Experimental Medicine at
McGill University decided to start lising internal job postings. Very shortly
this effort to enlist talent in the Montreal area and to foster a sense of community
between the diverse groups working in the fields of biomedicine and molecular
biology, began to grow rapidly. We now including postings from Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton
and several regions in the United States. Postings that once were exclusively Ph.D.
and post doc listings have now become chair and tenure track positions.

In keeping with the popularity and openess of
our project we have decided to invite the research community in general to
submit postings either by individual researchers or by institutions. WE do
reserve the right to refuse to list postings if we feel commercial companies are abusing
the non profit and VOLUNTEER effort.

TO view our current page and it`s listing point your browser to

BIOSCI is about halfway to its funding goal!!

I'm interrupting the usual monthly posting of the BIOSCI miniFAQ to
bring you up to date on BIOSCI fundraising progress, a topic of
concern to your future use of this resource. Thank you in advance for
taking the time to read this message carefully.

Last year we announced that BIOSCI was going to adopt the U.S. Public
Broadcasting System model to fund its operations after our DOE/NSF
grant runs out later this year. Unlike PBS, we are not soliciting
contributions from users; we are only selling ads on our Web pages
solely to cover our operating costs. Our goal is to seek sponsorships
until we build up an operating reserve of about $100,000 and then
cease further promotions until we need to build the reserve back up.
(The accountants among our readership will be familiar with the
problem of deferred revenue which we can not safely utilize until ads
have been displayed for a period of time.) We are only about halfway
to our funding goal and need to raise further funds to avoid having to
curtail services at net.bio.net. Fundraising is time-consuming,
however, and we need your help as explained further below.

Our operating costs consist of our network connection, phone lines,
hardware maintenance (we will be getting newer and faster hardware
soon!), plus 0.7 FTE of salaries covering UNIX systems admin,
technical support, quality assurance, i.e., testing, of our system,
and administrative costs (such as the time it takes to actually
find/write/call potential sponsors and raise money!). Although the
BIOSCI staff does get compensated for a portion of the work that they
do, this project has always received a lot of free after-hours and
"vacation" time labor, so we hope that no one will begrudge the time
that we do charge to the project to serve you. All of the three
part-time staff members, Dave Mack, Julie Lawrence, and myself, have
full time day jobs and families in addition to working hard to keep
this service running for all of you. Julie and Dave Mack are
subcontractors for BIOSCI; my time that is charged to the project
defrays a portion of my regular salary instead of adding to my income.

Besides having to relocate the project, we were very busy this last
year building new infrastructure such as our WWW hypermail interface
to the system. This was released last December along with scores of
WAIS indices for the newsgroups. Virtually everything is complete,
although we do continue to find and fix bugs (many through your
helpful feedback!). We are still having some problems with our WAIS
indexing. The archives continue to grow rapidly. We are running over
100 indexes now versus three previously and any systems crashes cause
greater havoc with the indexing than before! We are still working to
fix this as fast as our resources permit and appreciate your patience,
but we have been able to automate a lot of the infrastructure to
reduce labor as compared to past requirements.

We have also implemented new software to make moderation of
BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups much easier and combat the growing problem of
Internet junk mail and USENET "spamming." About 20% of our groups are
now moderated, many of them by the BIOSCI staff! This, for example,
made a major difference last year in the quality of content in our
EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered newsgroup which many commercial
concerns and recruiting firms are using **without charge** to recruit
candidates for positions in the biological sciences.

We are also now in a position to have sponsors for individual
newsgroups as you will have noticed if you have visited
http://www.bio.net/ and clicked on "Access the BIOSCI/bionet
newsgroups" recently.

So, how can you help??
----------------------

As noted above it can take a lot of time to contact potential sponsors
if I have to do it all myself. Our request is quite simple. You can
do two important things which will take very little time for you
individually.

First, please use our WWW system at http://www.bio.net/ to access the
archives. You can now post or reply to messages via your Web browser.
Your usage helps attract sponsors. If you contact any of our
sponsors, please be sure to thank them for supporting BIOSCI. It is
critical for them to get this feedback if they are to continue their
sponsorship for the long term.

Second, if you work for a company or organization that provides
products or services of interest to the biology community, please pass
this message on to your marketing or marketing communications
department or other appropriate group. Please ask them to help
support BIOSCI by sponsoring our Web site and explain the uses and
benefits of the system to the biology community. If they are
interested, they can then contact us for further information at our
tech support address, biosci-help@net.bio.net.

Our hope is to quickly raise several large corporate/institutional
sponsors on our heavily-used WWW locations (some stats appended
below), and then end this sponsorship campaign so that our resources
can continue to be used for service provision, not fundraising. Many
of our specialty newsgroup WWW archives are still used by small
communities of scientists (and they haven't been heavily promoted
yet). While these may be valuable niche markets to some advertisers,
it will generate more labor and overhead having to find these
sponsors, fairly price the locations, and deal with lots of smaller
sponsorships than fewer mid-to large sponsors. We are striving to
keep our operation as lean and efficient as possible since we are not
trying to make careers out of running BIOSCI. We are trying if at all
possible to avoid the administrative overhead entailed with processing
lots of small payments to reach our fundraising goals.

I'd like to thank all of you for your help in advance. In helping us,
you are also helping yourselves, not only in keeping this resource
available for all of the both large and small research communities
that we serve, but also by alleviating the need for us to go back and
compete with researchers for tight grant dollars! We promised NSF
when we were awarded the BIOSCI grant that we would carry out this
mission to make the service self-supporting. With your help, we will
succeed in continuing BIOSCI's work into its second decade. Thank you
very much!

				Sincerely,

				Dave Kristofferson
