                             October 1, 1996

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is currently available
in my laboratory to participate in NIH-funded studies on mechanisms of
locus control region function and erythroid-specific gene transcription.
Questions being investigated include - how is the human b-globin lcr shared
by multiple promoters on a chromosome, what are the requirements for
long-range gene activation by lcrs, and do the protein components of the
lcr form ordered nucleoprotein complexes?

A second project focuses on the TAL1 protein, an erythroid-specific
transcription factor and a crucial regulator of mammalian development. The
regulatory regions of the TAL1 gene are disrupted by a chromosomal deletion
in patients with acute T cell lymphocytic leukemia. This deletion results
in ectopic expression of TAL1 in T cells, and thus may be directly involved
in leukemogenesis. One aim is to delineate the cis-acting elements and
trans-acting factors which drive TAL1 transcription in erythroid and T
cells. A second aim focuses on identifying target genes for TAL1.

Potential applicants should submit a brief description of research
interests, a curriculum vitae, and the names of three individuals for
recommendations to:

science, which will incorporate the technology, involves using the system
to study complex microbial interactions. This may involve studies of the
role of chemotaxis in microbial competition; the effect of different
physico-chemical regimens on microbial community and population
structure; or understanding synergistic effects of different chemical
gradients on microbial growth and behavior. These projects may involve
pure and/or mixed populations of microorganisms. The specific problem may,
in part, depend on the interests of the individual. Persons with
interests in microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, microbial
physiology, or relevant engineering backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
The person hired for this position will be part of the new affiliation

Postdoctoral position: Pathogenesis of AIDS

Immunopathogenesis of acute SIV infection:
Infection of pigtailed macaques with the PBj14 strain of simian
immunodeficiency virus (SIV) provides an important model for the initial
stages of HIV infection, which may be critical to subsequent disease
progression. SIVsmmPBj14 induces an unusually severe acute disease
syndrome that is characterized by high levels of viral replication and
severe enteropathy (Nature 345:636, 1990; J. Virol. 68:7800, 1994; Virology
215:97, 1996). This is accompanied by extensive immune activation and
elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis
factor alpha (TNFa) and interleukin-6. We are interested in examining the
role that immune activation and pro-inflammatory cytokines play in the
pathogenesis of SIVsmmPBj14-induced acute disease, through the use of
specific cytokine blockers and immunosuppressants. These experiments will
be conducted in collaboration with researchers at the Yerkes Regional
Primate Research Center in Atlanta, and will include analyses of viral
load, T-cell activation, apoptosis and disease progression. In addition,
in vitro experiments will also be performed to to analyse the mechanism
whereby SIVsmmPBj14 induces cellular proliferation, since this property is
strongly associated with the ability of the virus to induce acute disease
in vivo. Finally, the contribution of T-cell activation to the subsequent
progression of SIV-induced immunodeficiency will be analyzed directly,
using SIVsmmFGB. SIVsmmFGB is closely related to SIVsmmPBj14, but is not
acutely lethal -- rather, it induces fatal immunodeficiency within 4-6
months. Studies will be conducted to assess the effect that treatment of
macaques with cyclosporin-A during the acute-phase of SIVsmmFGB infection
has on clinical, immunologic and virologic parameters. This NIH-funded
position is available immediately.

Summary: Announcing 2 lectureships at University of Skovde, Sweden

OVERSEAS OPPORTUNITY - SWEDEN

The University of Skovde is one of the younger universities in Sweden,
currently undergoing a dynamic development. The main focus of all the
University activities is towards the private sector, industry and
international trade, especially the development and use of tools for
information technology; the computer science department is one of the
larger ones in Sweden. Seven areas of competence have been
established; engineering sciences, computer science, cognitive
science, behavioural science, economics, languages and humanities and
media. The University has set a goal where each area of competence
will be tightly coupled with research.

The University will make an extensive investment in the development of
a new area of competence, i.e. scientific biocomputing. The basis for
the development of this area of competence will be a biocomputing
programme, which lies in the dynamic interface between biology and
computer science inspiring one-another. The area of competence will be
developed from a theoretical viewpoint, where mathematical models and
computer simulations are natural tools for biology (scientific
computing), and where biological concepts support the further
development of computer science. The first lecturer in the new area of
competence will have the opportunity to introduce the development of
this dynamic area of competence.

The University of Skovde, conveniently located between Gothenburg and
Stockholm, hereby makes a notification of post as

- university lectureship in theoretical ecology, ref. no. 227-96-42
- university lectureship in molecular biology, ref.no. 228-96-42

The position in theoretical ecology involves teaching in the
University's biocomputing programme, both introductory and
higher-level courses in ecology as well as theoretical ecology. The
lecturer in question will also provide teaching in physiology and
evolution at introductory level. It is also required that the holder
of said position will devote his/her time to research within the field
of theoretical ecology in a wider perspective together with an
appropriate network consisting of those researchers related to the
subject area and their respective institutions. The holder of the
position here in question must possess a doctorate degree in ecology,
alt. zoology with the direction towards ecology; it is desirable that
the candidate considered for this position will have a scientific
direction towards zoology. The holder of this position must also have
gained experience in computer simulation of biological problems and
the ability to theoretically handle ecological problems.

The position in molecular biology involves teaching in the
University's biocomputing programme in molecular genetics, alt. cell
biology and immunology. The lecturer in question will also have the
responsibility to teach introductory courses in genetics, cell biology
and micro biology. The holder of said position is expected to do
research within molecular cell biology, immunology or molecular
genetics. He/she must possess a doctorate degree in immunology or
genetics with the direction towards molecular science. The holder of
this position will also have gained experience in the use of modern
technological tools available for biological applications such as
computer simulations. Experience from the pharmaceutical industry is
highly desirable.

The holders of these positions will be involved both in teaching and
research. The teaching will take place in English (and/or
Swedish). Both positions will be filled as soon as possible.

Special emphasis will be placed upon the applicants' scientific and
pedagogical skills. The salary for each position will be dependent on
the applicants' qualifications and overall competence. The applicants
shall indicate their required salary in the application.

Additional information about both positions will be provided by the
Vice-Chancellor of University of Skovde, Lars-Erik Johansson, phone
number: +46 500 46 46 08, e mail lars-erik.johansson@sta.his.se (fax
