Post-doctoral position in Plant Signal Transduction=20
(Signaux et Messages Cellulaires chez les V=E9g=E9taux, UMR 5546 CNRS-UPS,
Toulouse France. Director:R. Ranjeva)

A post-doctoral associate may be appointed by the French Minist=E8re des
Affaires Etrang=E8res to join the group working on "receptors and second
messengers" in Toulouse for one or possibly two years. The awardee selected
by a ad hoc committee of the French Ministry is expected to begin on october
1997. Only non french citizens or/and non french residents are
eligible (knowledge of the French Language is not mandatory).

scientific environment:

The research group (seven (7) researchers and two (2) engineers holding
permanent positions) is interested in the general problem of plant cell
signalling with a special emphasis on the regulation of plasma
membrane-bound voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCCs). Recent results
have shown that the activity of the VDCCs is tightly regulated by
protein-protein interactions involving cytoskeletal components. Current work
aims at deciphering the mechanisms involved and identifying key molecules by
combining in vitro (purification, reconstitution; study of protein-protein
interaction by affinity chromatography) and in vivo analysis (mesurement of
channel activities; use of transgenics and/or mutants affected in
cytoskeletal organization and/or sensitivity to plant growth substances and
the two-hybrid system).=20
The research group uses important core facilities making it possible to
perform most of the modern methods in biochemistry, cell and molecular
biology and patch-clamp. The group is involved in ntional and international
programs and networks (for example the group is supported by the
France-Berkeley Foundation to work with the laboratiry of R. L Jones at
Berkeley, Cal).
Four representative papers of the group: Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, (1993)
90,. 765-769.; EMBO J., (1994) 13, pp. 2970-2975. EMBO J., (1994) 13, pp.
5843-5847. FEBS Lett., (1996) 393, pp13-18.
The post-doctoral associate will be selected on the basis of his CV and his
research proposal which will be discussed. He has to be specialized in one
(or more) of the following fields:
- electrophysiology (patch-clamp),
- modern cytology including fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy
and/otr image analysis,
- biochemistry of protein-protein interactions.
eligibility:
- Ph D degree obtained for less than four (4) years before appointment,
- International records of publications,
- three confidential letters of recommendation.
salary and environment::
The salary, paid by the French Minist=E8re des Affaires Etrang=E8res is
approximately FF 12 000 corresponding to the salary of an Assistant=
 Professor.=20
Toulouse is part of the French Languedoc (southwest) and renowed for his
history, culture and gastronomy. Toulouse is only two-hour drive from the
Pyr=E9nees, the Mediterranean Sea or the Atlantic Ocean and hosts 100 000
students.

We have an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the
field of molecular signalling. The project focuses on the
determination of the mechanism(s) by which nicotine inactivates
mammalian neuronal nicotinic receptors composed of different protein
subunits. Our evidence demonstrates that exposure to nicotine
enhances the phosphorylation of one of the subunits by at least two
specific protein kinases. The effects of nicotine are being examined
using the Xenopus oocyte expression system which permits expression
and molecular manipulation of the receptors, and analysis using both
electrophysiological and biochemical methods. The role of
phosphorylation of specific sites on the receptor proteins in
nicotine-induced inactivation will be examined by site-directed
mutagenesis of these sites, and the nicotine-induced phosphorylation
of native receptors expressed in primary neuronal cell cultures
prepared from specific brain regions.

Postdoctoral Position is available to perform structure/function studies
on the Na,K-ATPase. The long-term goals of these studies are to
characterize the mechanism of inhibition of the pump by cardiac
glycosides; to understand the mechanism of ion translocation; and to
provide information regarding the enzyme's structure and conformation.
The main approach entails characterization of wildtype, site-directed
and random mutants of the pump expressed in and purified from
cultured mammalian and insect cells. The ideal candidate will have a
background in molecular biology and/or biochemistry with experience
in the characterization of proteins, especially P-type ATPases. Those
experienced in protein biochemistry will be given highest consideration.
Outstanding applicants from other disciplines will also be considered. The
long-term goals of the applicant should be to eventually secure a position as
an independent scientist in either academia or the private sector. While the
successful applicant need not provide their own support, the applicant will be
expected to write an individual postdoctoral fellowship application (e.g. NIH
NRSA) during the course of the training period. This opportunity will provide
the successful candidate with expertise in the modern tools of molecular

The Gastrointestinal Physiology Laboratory of the Department of
Pharmacology and Physiology, New Jersey Medical School is currently
seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position and/or research
technician position. To complement laboratory strengths in
physiological techniques, we are interested in candidates with a
background in cellular and molecular biology. The successful candidate
will develop his/her National Institute on Aging-funded research along
the following lines: nutritional control of cell differentiation and
proliferation, and role of nutrients in modulating intestinal gene
expression. The successful candidate will join a productive laboratory
with a clinical researcher, two postdoctoral fellows and several medical
and graduate students. Although the project is on intestinal nutrient
transport in aging, the prospective fellow has ample opportunities for
an expanded research experience in related research areas such as
dietary and hormonal induction of intestinal nutrient transport in
neonates, and comparative physiology of intestinal nutrient transport.
Prospective candidates for the postdoctoral position need not have
prior postdoctoral experience. Applicants for the technician position
need not have a PhD but should have a MS degree or equivalent in an
appropriate field. If interested, send your CV and names of three

Postdoctoral Position Available
Center of Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research
Tufts University School of Medicine-NEMC
Boston, MA

We have an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the
field of molecular signaling and peptide-protein recognition. The
project focuses on the human thrombin receptor. The thrombin receptor
is activated by thrombin cleavage of the receptor exodomain and exposure
of an N-terminal tethered ligand that binds to the body of the
receptor. Receptor activation precipitates complex signaling events
culminating in platelet aggregation, wound healing, and cellular
proliferation.

We have recently discovered that plasmin can efficiently remove the
N-terminal ligand by cleavage at three downstream sites in the
C-terminus of the exodomain. Current studies are in progress to
determine whether this novel proteolytic shut-down mechanism occurs in
vivo. Other ongoing projects include NMR structural studies of the
thrombin receptor exodomain complexed with extracellular loops and the
mechanism of substrate-assisted domain cleavage by thrombin. Insight
into the molecular interactions between the exodomain and the body of
the receptor should provide leads for the development of novel
anti-thrombotic agents.

The laboratory is located within the Center of Hemostasis and Thrombosis
Research, a modern, state-of-the-art facility with a staff of 20
investigators including technical support. Qualifications for this
position are a Ph.D. degree and US citizenship or permanent residency.
Candidates with training in biochemistry/biophysics who would like to
acquire expertise in molecular biology are encouraged to apply.

interests, a CV, and names of three references to:

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP - MYCOBACTERIAL PATHOGENESIS
UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, VANCOUVER, CANADA.

A postdoctoral position is available in April 1997 in a research group
studying the pathogenesis of mycobacterial infection. The projects
within
the laboratory aim to identify host and bacterial factors which
control
the outcome of an infection with M. tuberculosis and M. avium complex.
The
postdoctoral position is available for the following project:-

Identification of mycobacterial virulence factors at the molecular
level.
Genetic complementation of an avirulent isolate of M. intracellulare (a
slow growing pathogenic mycobacteria) with a gene library from a
virulent
isolate of M. intracellulare is being used to identify genes which
promote
survival and growth of mycobacteria. Site-specific mutagenesis by
homologous
recombination is being used to construct isogenic mutants in genes a)
already characterised in mycobacteria which may be involved in survival
and
b) genes which alter the colony morphology of M. intracellulare.

The successful applicant would be expected to have completed a Ph.D. and
may

GRADUATE STUDY IN MARINE ZOOPLANKTON ECOLOGY

There is an opening available immediately for a Ph.D. candidate
in the Ocean Sciences Centre at Memorial University. The position
concerns the physiological ecology of gelatinous zooplankton
known as pelagic tunicates, in particular the group
appendicularia. I am looking for a student who is interested in
studying any one of several aspects of appendicularian ecology,
including their life cycle and generation time in the Labrador
Current (a field study), their ingestion rate of naturally
occurring colloidal organic matter (an experimental study) and
their respiration and excretion rates (an experimental study). I
have been studying cold-ocean appendicularians from the Labrador
Current for 15 years, and from Arctic polynyas off northeastern
Greenland and in the Bering Sea since 1993. These tunicates occur
commonly near my laboratory in Newfoundland between December and
June each year and can be collected for experiments using SCUBA.

I am looking for highly qualified candidates with an interest in
research. Candidates possessing a Master's Degree in Biology,
Biological Oceanography, Marine Biology or Zoology will be
favoured. Having SCUBA certification will be a plus. Interested
candidates should send me a covering letter, CV and the names and
addresses of at least 3 referees. There is no deadline, as I will
continue my search until a suitable candidate has been found.
After my initial review of the CV's, promising candidates will be
invited to apply for formal admission to the Graduate School at
Memorial University, in the Department of Biology. If you would
like more information about the graduate programme in Ocean
Sciences at Memorial University, consult our web page at

Cleveland. OH, USA

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the area of
membrane traffic in epithelial cells. The project focuses on the
identification of the novel cellular proteins that assist in the process of
polarized protein sorting. Our current work demonstrates the presence of
endogenous proteins that interact with various sorting signals. Such
proteins are being identified and characterized by the techniques of cell
molecular biology and protein chemistry. Their functional role will be
tested using in vitro system described earlier (Nature, v 362, p 456-458;
J. Cell Biol. v 125, p 1025-1035)

Experience in phage display library or expression library screening will be

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW POSITION

AVAILABLE

A position is available to study the molecular genetics of replication
and the cell cycle in the mammalian genome. We use Epstein-Barr and
human papilloma virus sequences as model systems both in vivo and in
vitro to study site-specific initiation and termination of DNA
replication (Cell 58:527, 1989; Mol. Cell. Biol. 11:6268, 1991; J.
Virol. 67:1739, 1993; Mol. Cell. Biol. 15:2893, 1995). The replication
of globin and immunoglobulin gene families (Mol. Cell. Biol. 8: 2149
and 4958, 1988; 9:3524, 1989; 10:4314 and 4324, 1990) and the role of
replication in oncogene rearrangements and in development is being
investigated. We are characterizing origins of replication that we
have identified in human rDNA (Mol. Cell. Biol., 13:6600, 1993).
Targeted integration mediated by homologous recombination will be used
to modify chromosomal origins and to determine the sequences critical
for origin function. Other projects include the role of the Locus
Control Region (LCR) in the regulation of replication of globin and
immunoglobulin gene loci. The spat
