Intestinal Development and Differentiation

Research opportunities for postdoctoral fellows available in the laboratory of:

The goals of the laboratory are to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that
direct development and differentiation in the intestine and understand how
those mechanisms may be abrogated in intestinal diseases such as
metaplasia and carcinoma. Projects are open in several areas including:

1. Function of caudal-related homeobox genes (Cdx) in intestinal
epithelial cells and intestinal neoplasia. Cdx homeodomain proteins are
capable of regulating proliferation and directing morphological and
molecular differentiation in intestinal epithelial cells. Furthermore,
preliminary data suggest that Cdx genes play a role in metaplasia and
carcinogenesis in the intestinal tract. Work on this project will focus
on examining the mechanisms for regulation of proliferation and
differentiation by Cdx gene family members.

2. Developmental and spatial patterns of intestinal gene transcription
using sucrase-isomaltase as a model gene. These experiments have revealed
potentially new mechanisms for spatial regulation of intestinal genes and
for the determination of epithelial cell lineage. These issues are being
approached using transgenic mice, DNase I hypersensitivity site analysis,
in vivo footprinting, and the analysis of DNA-protein interactions.

Postdoctoral Position Available
Center of Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research
Tufts University School of Medicine-NEMC
Boston, MA

We have an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the
field of molecular signaling and peptide-protein recognition. The
project focuses on the human thrombin receptor. The thrombin receptor
is activated by thrombin cleavage of the receptor exodomain and exposure
of an N-terminal tethered ligand that binds to the body of the
receptor. Receptor activation precipitates complex signaling events
culminating in platelet aggregation, wound healing, and cellular
proliferation. Since chronic activation of the receptor may lead to
coronary artery disease, stroke, and other vascular diseases, preventing
thrombin receptor activation is of pharmacologic interest.

NMR structural studies of the thrombin receptor exodomain in activated
and resting forms are currently in progress and a preliminary structure
has been generated for the activated exodomain. Future projects include
solving the structure of the exodomain complexed with extracellular
loops and the mechanism of substrate-assisted domain cleavage by
thrombin. Insight into the molecular interactions between the exodomain
and the body of the receptor should provide leads for the development of
novel anti-thrombotic agents.

The laboratory is located within the Center of Hemostasis and Thrombosis
Research, a modern, state-of-the-art facility with a staff of 20
investigators including technical support. The NMR facility is located
in the Medical School Biochemistry Department and current
instrumentation include Bruker AMX 500 MHz and 400 MHz magnets along
with several SGI workstations. Our lab has a close collaboration with
NMR spectroscopist, Dr. James Baleja, who provides additional technical
expertise. Qualifications for this position are a Ph.D. degree and US
citizenship or permanent residency. Candidates with training in NMR who
would like to acquire expertise in molecular biology are encouraged to
apply. Interested candidates should e-mail a description of their
research interests, a CV, and names of three references to:

Intestinal Development and Differentiation

Research opportunities for postdoctoral fellows available in the laboratory of:

Dr. Peter G. Traber
Professor of Medicine and Genetics
Clinical Research Building, Suite 600
422 Curie Blvd.

A postdoctoral position is available for an individual with experience in
protein and nucleic acid chemistry and an interest in novel regulatory
mechanisms. We are analysing the molecular basis of the Spm tranposon's
unique epigenetic regulatory system (Cell, v77 p427, 1994). The Spm
promoter is rapidly inactivated and methylated in transgenic cells and an
element-encoded protein (TnpA) is able to both reactivate the promoter and
reverse the methylation. We are analysing the macromolecular interactions
between element-encoded proteins and element sequences in vitro, in
bacteria and in transgenic plants to understand the underlying molecular
mechanisms that regulate element transcription, as well as transposition.

Dear reader:

As many of you know, although I have been doing BIOSCI work for over a
decade, it has never been my main line of work. Unfortunately I am
currently involved in an intense software product development effort
which is making a *lot* of demands on my time. Juggling this work
with family demands and BIOSCI efforts has not been easy. This
situation will continue through about mid-April at which time life
will return to some semblance of normalcy. This is the reason for the
gaps between batches of postings on bionet.announce,
bionet.jobs.offered, and bionet.biology.computational, the three
newsgroups that I moderate. My apologies for these delays, and I hope
to return to normal operations in about a month. I greatly appreciate
your patience in the meantime. Please do not repost messages if you
don't see them immediately. I just have to eliminate the duplicates.
Please rest assured that your postings have been received and will be
processed as soon as possible.

				Sincerely,

				Dave Kristofferson

There are two openings for postdoctoral fellows to take part in a 3-year
interdisciplinary program to develop a coupled ocean-atmosphere sulfur model
(Northern Ocean DMS Emission Model - NODEM). The model will be used to study
the potential feedback of marine biogenic aerosols on climate. One position is
to conduct a field research program on DMS production in the NW Atlantic with a
special emphasis on the influencence of food chain interactions on DMS
production. The second position is for an interdisciplinary modeller to develop
an oceanic DMS emission model and to couple it with an atmospheric aerosols
model. The positions are for one year with possibility of renewal subject to
the availability of funds and satisfactory performance. They are tenable at the
Institut Maurice-Lamontagne, a Fisheries and Oceans Canada laboratory in
Mont-Joli, Québec.

Both positions require a recent Ph.D. in oceanography, or in a field related to
oceanography, demonstrable publication experience in the peer-reviewed
literature, and an ability and interest in teamwork. The field oceanographer
should have a good expertise in sulfur gas measurement in water and experience
in biological processes controlling marine DMS production. The
interdisciplinary modeller should have experience in computer-based modelling,
either of air-sea exchanges, fluid circulation, biogeochemical processes or
aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Preference may be given to candidates possessing
experience specifically in sulfur dynamics or in more than one of the areas
indicated.

Interested candidates should send a covering letter, cv and the names and
addresses of at least three references to either Maurice Levasseur (field
oceanographer) or Alain Vézina (interdisciplinary modeller) at:

Institut Maurice Lamontagne
850 route de la Mer
C.P. 1000
Mont-Joli, QC

(LAST REVISION: 30-JUL-95)

This BIOSCI "miniFAQ" is designed to answer the questions that come up
the *most frequently*. The main BIOSCI FAQ (Frequently Asked
Questions) is accessible on the World Wide Web at URL
http://www.bio.net/.

If you can not find an answer to your question in this or other
documentation, the BIOSCI technical support staff answers e-mail
queries sent to

		       biosci-help@net.bio.net

We can only answer questions about the use of the newsgroups and
mailing lists. We unfortunately do not have the staff to do Internet
information searches or answer scientific questions. Please post
those to the appropriate BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups.

0) BIOSCI NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!!
------------------------------
BIOSCI's government funding has been expended, and we are now
operating solely from advertising revenue that we have raised from our
Web site at http://www.bio.net/. We need just a few minutes of your
time to help us serve you.

You can do two important things which will take very little time for
you individually and will immensely help us continue to help you.

First, please use our WWW system at http://www.bio.net/ to access the
archives. You can post or reply to messages via your Web browser as
described in item #1 below. Your usage helps attract sponsors. If you
contact any of our sponsors, please be sure to thank them for
supporting BIOSCI. It is critical for them to get this feedback if
they are to continue their sponsorship for the long term.

Second, if you work for a company or organization that provides
products or services of interest to the biology community, please pass
this message on to your marketing or marketing communications
department or other appropriate group. Please ask them to help
support BIOSCI by sponsoring our Web site and explain the uses and
benefits of the system to the biology community. If they are
interested, they can then contact us for further information at our
tech support address, biosci-help@net.bio.net.

1) Using the WWW to access the BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups.
--------------------------------------------------------
As of 10 December 1995, all BIOSCI/bionet full newsgroups are
accessible through the World Wide Web (WWW) at URL http://www.bio.net.
One can read and reply publicly or privately to both recent postings
and archived messages through one's Web browser if it is configured
properly to send e-mail. Each newsgroup is equipped with its own WAIS
index. The main BIOSCI home page also has access to the BIO-JOURNALS
Table of Contents database WAIS index and the BIOSCI user address
database described in another item further below.

2) What to do about "spams," i.e., junk mail, ads, etc.
-------------------------------------------------------
BIOSCI is a set of parallel USENET newsgroups (the "bionet" groups),
mailing lists, and a hypermail archive at URL http://www.bio.net/.
The same postings are distributed on all media (except for a small
number of mailing-list-only groups at net.bio.net). Unfortunately it
is becoming a despicable practice on the Internet (by a few people out
to make a fast buck) to do automated mass postings to thousands of
newsgroups and mailing lists. These attempts to grab free advertising
are refered to as "spams" in the usual, somewhat boneheaded, net
terminology. USENET is more susceptible to this practice, and many
spams originate on the USENET groups and then are passed on to the
mailing lists. However, spammers also get lists of mailing addresses
and hit these too, so neither medium is immune.

What should you do personally if you get junk mail?
---------------------------------------------------
Just delete it and move on without reading it further. Filing a
protest is becoming increasingly useless because spammers are often
disguising the addresses where the messages are sent from. Unless you
really understand Internet mail systems, your attempt at protest by
sending replies to the message will often end up being sent to the
address of an innocent person that the spammer is victimizing.

What can BIOSCI/bionet do to protect its newsgroups?
----------------------------------------------------
The only solution currently available is to moderate the newsgroup.
If this newsgroup is already moderated, then you are in good shape.
Moderation protects the USENET distribution from about 95% of the
spams that are being sent to date and protects the mailing lists
completely. Moderation means, however, that someone has to take the
time to review each message before it goes out. We have set up
software here that simply allows the moderator to forward to an
address at net.bio.net messages that (s)he wishes to have distributed.
This takes no more time than that needed to read the message and pass
it on, say about 1 min. per message.

Most newsgroups currently have a discussion leader who is responsible
for their newsgroup. The discussions leaders and their e-mail
addresses are listed in the BIOSCI Information Sheet which is
available on the Web at http://www.bio.net/. If a newsgroup is being
hit with too many junk postings, please contact the discussion leader
for that group and see if there is interest in moderating the group.
Please do not assume that by simply posting a complaint to the
newsgroup itself, anyone on the BIOSCI staff will act on your
complaint. With close to 100 newsgroups to run, the BIOSCI staff has
to rely on the discussion leaders of each newsgroup to report problems
directly to us at biosci-help@net.bio.net.

We will moderate any of our newsgroups if the discussion leader tells
us that the readership of the group wishes to do so and if a moderator
is willing to do the work. For most BIOSCI/bionet groups, this
entails only a few minutes of work each day.

Moderating a newsgroup will resolve probably 95% of the junk postings
on the USENET distribution. Unfortunately there are easy ways for
determined spammers to override the moderation mechanism on USENET,
but we can protect our e-mail subscribers from unwanted postings if
the newsgroup is moderated. You can also access our newsgroups over
the WWW at URL http://www.bio.net. While this Web interface will not
stop spammers from trying to post to the groups, this will give you
yet another way, besides using USENET news, to keep the junk out of
your personal mail files. For those of you with local USENET news
systems, the Web interface will also give you faster access to new
newsgroups and recent postings.

3) Examples of subscribing and unsubscribing to the mailing lists.
------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE NOTE: The BIOSCI management does NOT act on
subscription/unsubscription requests that are posted improperly to the
newsgroups and mailing lists. People who do this only bother everyone
on the lists to no avail. Please be sure to follow the proper
procedures below.

Gory details are in the BIOSCI Information sheets on the Web at
http://www.bio.net. Below we give an example utilizing the
METHODS-AND-REAGENTS list at both of our two BIOSCI sites:

Users in the Americas and Pacific Rim countries who use the BIOSCI
------------------------------------------------------------------
node at computer net.bio.net:
----------------------------

A) Determine the "listname" which is the <=8 character mail address
                                         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
for the group. These can be found in the BIOSCI Info. Sheet. For
the METHODS-AND-REAGENTS group the mailing address is
methods@net.bio.net. The listname is the portion of the address to
the left of the @ sign, i.e., "methods". The listname is used with
the "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" commands illustrated below.

B) Mail all commands in the body of a mail message addressed to
biosci-server@net.bio.net. Do NOT send commands to the newsgroup
posting addresses! Leave the Subject: line blank, any text on it
   will be ignored.

C) In the body of your message put one or more of the following
commands with an "end" command on the last line, e.g.,

   subscribe methods
   unsubscribe methods
   end

Do NOT put your e-mail address or other text on these lines. The
server only allows you to cancel your subscription if the address
on your mail header matches the address on our mailing list.
Please ask for help at biosci-help@net.bio.net if your address has
changed, e.g., if you know you are on the list but the server tells
you that you are not a member.

Users in Europe, Africa, and Central Asia who use the BIOSCI node at
--------------------------------------------------------------------
computer daresbury.ac.uk (also known as dl.ac.uk):
-------------------------------------------------

To subscribe and unsubscribe to/from the BIOSCI lists, you need to
specify the full USENET newsgroup name with "bionet-news." prepended.
The USENET newsgroup names are listed in the BIOSCI Information sheet
on the Web at http://www.bio.net/. For the METHODS-AND-REAGENTS list
the USENET newsgroup name is bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts, thus the
appropriate commands are

    sub bionet-news.bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts

    unsub bionet-news.bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts

These commands are included in a message addressed to mxt@dl.ac.uk,
NOT to the newsgroup mailing addresses. As usual, include the text in
the body of the message as text on the Subject: line is ignored.

To unsubscribe from all the lists at the UK node, use

    unsub bionet-news

Please note that if the address in the list is different than the one
in your mail message header, you will not be able to unsubscribe by
this method. If you have problems, please mail biosci@daresbury.ac.uk.

4) The BIOSCI user address and research interest directory.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please take this opportunity to add your name, address, and research
interest information to the BIOSCI User Address Database if you have
not already done so.

You can fill out the address form directly through our Web page at URL
http://www.bio.net/adrform.html.

The address database is reindexed nightly for WWW access (the URL is
http://www.bio.net/). If you are not directly on the Internet but can
reach it by e-mail, please use our waismail server to access the user
directory. waismail use is described above. You can also request a
user address form by e-mail from biosci-help@net.bio.net.

Please check your database entry from time-to-time to see if your
address information is still up-to-date. Because of our limited
personnel resources, we ask that you resubmit a *complete* form to
revise your entry; we only replace complete entries and do not have
resources to edit old forms.

				Dave Kristofferson

Newsgroup Charter and Moderation Policy:

EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered is to be used for the posting of job
openings in the biological sciences or professional level jobs that
support the work of biological scientists (such as for
computer/systems programming/support). Jobs in both the non-profit
and for-profit sectors may be posted without format restrictions.
For-profit jobs, however, must be for professional level positions
that support biology research or that require the hiring of someone
with biological expertise, i.e., routine administrative jobs in
commercial companies, e.g., secretarial positions at biotech
companies, will not be posted in this forum and should instead be sent
to misc.jobs.offered.

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR JOB AD MULTIPLE TIMES WITHIN A FEW DAYS. The
newsgroup is moderated and sometimes the moderator is delayed in
processing the postings. Sending in duplicates creates additional
work for the moderator who has to start out by looking at and deleting
duplicate posts. Rest assured that your post will go out as soon as
possible if it falls within our charter or you will be contacted if
there is a problem (unless the post is an obvious spam - see below).

PLEASE BE SURE to use descriptive Subject: lines in your job postings.
It also helps to start with the abbreviated job location using the
country code and possibly the state/province, e.g.,

Subject: US/CA Postdoctoral postion in XXX

indicating that the job is in the United States/California. Subject
lines like "Job Opening" do not attract readers to your ad!!

Resumes will not be posted on bionet.jobs.offered. Such postings
should be directed to bionet.jobs.wanted.

			     IMPORTANT!!
Because of the volume of posts to this newsgroup, the moderator will
assume that the readers are familiar with the policy as stated in this
newsgroup charter and will reject without comment any messages that do
not follow the guidelines above. Appeals may be sent to
biosci-help@net.bio.net if one thinks that a posting was incorrectly
omitted. Misdirected resumes will be deleted without comment. It is
the responsibility of the posters, not the moderator, to read the
newsgroup usage instructions for bionet.jobs.wanted and
bionet.jobs.offered.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER - The moderator does not check the content or
accuracy of EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered job ads and makes no
warranty, expressed or implied, about the truthfulness or accuracy of
the job descriptions posted on this newsgroup. The moderator's sole
function is to filter out messages that do not appear to conform to
the newsgroup charter above and distribute messages that do appear to
conform to the newsgroup charter. Readers assume all responsibility
for confirming on their own the accuracy of the job descriptions
posted to the newsgroup.

UNIVERSITY OF MONTREAL
Postdoctoral Position

A post-doctoral position is available immediately for the study of the
cellular functions of the RoRNP ribonucleoprotein, in Schizosaccharomyces
pombe. Lately, Dr. Sandra Wolin's group has shown that the Ro60
polypeptide component of the RoRNP interacts with defective 5S rRNA in
Xenopus oocytes, and thus they have proposed that this protein acts as an
RNA chaperone in the folding of 5S rRNA, leading mutant 5S molecules to
degradation (see O'Brien & Wolin, 1994, Genes & Development. 8:2891-2903;
Shi et al., 1996, RNA 2:769-784).

Training in molecular biology and genetics of yeast is required, previous
