Newsgroup Charter and Moderation Policy:

EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered is to be used for the posting of job
openings in the biological sciences or professional level jobs that
support the work of biological scientists (such as for
computer/systems programming/support). Jobs in both the non-profit
and for-profit sectors may be posted without format restrictions.
For-profit jobs, however, must be for professional level positions
that support biology research or that require the hiring of someone
with biological expertise, i.e., routine administrative jobs in
commercial companies, e.g., secretarial positions at biotech
companies, will not be posted in this forum and should instead be sent
to misc.jobs.offered.

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR JOB AD MULTIPLE TIMES WITHIN A FEW DAYS. The
newsgroup is moderated and sometimes the moderator is delayed in
processing the postings. Sending in duplicates creates additional
work for the moderator who has to start out by looking at and deleting
duplicate posts. Rest assured that your post will go out as soon as
possible if it falls within our charter or you will be contacted if
there is a problem (unless the post is an obvious spam - see below).

PLEASE BE SURE to use descriptive Subject: lines in your job postings.
It also helps to start with the abbreviated job location using the
country code and possibly the state/province, e.g.,

Subject: US/CA Postdoctoral postion in XXX

indicating that the job is in the United States/California. Subject
lines like "Job Opening" do not attract readers to your ad!!

Resumes will not be posted on bionet.jobs.offered. Such postings
should be directed to bionet.jobs.wanted.

			     IMPORTANT!!
Because of the volume of posts to this newsgroup, the moderator will
assume that the readers are familiar with the policy as stated in this
newsgroup charter and will reject without comment any messages that do
not follow the guidelines above. Appeals may be sent to
biosci-help@net.bio.net if one thinks that a posting was incorrectly
omitted. Misdirected resumes will be deleted without comment. It is
the responsibility of the posters, not the moderator, to read the
newsgroup usage instructions for bionet.jobs.wanted and
bionet.jobs.offered.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER - The moderator does not check the content or
accuracy of EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered job ads and makes no
warranty, expressed or implied, about the truthfulness or accuracy of
the job descriptions posted on this newsgroup. The moderator's sole
function is to filter out messages that do not appear to conform to
the newsgroup charter above and distribute messages that do appear to
conform to the newsgroup charter. Readers assume all responsibility
for confirming on their own the accuracy of the job descriptions
posted to the newsgroup.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE: position available immediately (to be filled by June).
LOCATION: Biotechnology Institute, The Pennsylvania State University
BACKGROUND NEEDED: protein and nucleic acid chemistry, microbiology,
chemistry.
RESEARCH PROJECT: the interaction between proteins and DNA in the
transposition of a eukaryotic transposon. Transposition and transcription
are negatively regulated by methylation, while the element encodes a unique
protein that is capable of activating (and demethylating) the element's
methylated promoter. The same protein binds to multiple binding sites at
transposon ends, mediating the formation of a transposition complex. We
are analysing the underlying molecular mechanisms at the level of
DNA-protein interactions. Find more at

Postdoctoral Position Available
Center of Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research
Tufts University School of Medicine-NEMC
Boston, MA

We have an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the
field of molecular signaling and peptide-protein recognition. The
project focuses on the human thrombin receptor. The thrombin receptor
is activated by thrombin cleavage of the receptor exodomain and exposure
of an N-terminal tethered ligand that binds to the body of the
receptor. Receptor activation precipitates complex signaling events
culminating in platelet aggregation, wound healing, and cellular
proliferation. Since chronic activation of the receptor may lead to
coronary artery disease, stroke, and other vascular diseases, preventing
thrombin receptor activation is of pharmacologic interest.

NMR structural studies of the thrombin receptor exodomain in activated
and resting forms are currently in progress and a preliminary structure
has been generated for the activated exodomain. Future projects include
solving the structure of the exodomain complexed with extracellular
loops and the mechanism of substrate-assisted domain cleavage by
thrombin. Insight into the molecular interactions between the exodomain
and the body of the receptor should provide leads for the development of
novel anti-thrombotic agents.

The laboratory is located within the Center of Hemostasis and Thrombosis
Research, a modern, state-of-the-art facility with a staff of 20
investigators including technical support. The NMR facility is located
in the Medical School Biochemistry Department and current
instrumentation include Bruker AMX 500 MHz and 400 MHz magnets along
with several SGI workstations. A new 600 MHz magnet will be added to
the NMR facility in the next 6 months. Our lab has a close
collaboration with NMR spectroscopist, Dr. James Baleja, who provides
additional technical expertise. Qualifications for this position are a
Ph.D. degree and US citizenship or permanent residency. Candidates with
training in NMR who would like to acquire expertise in molecular biology
are encouraged to apply. Interested candidates should e-mail a
description of their research interests, a CV, and names of three

A postdoctoral position is available immediately to study the
molecular mechanisms of signal transduction by heterotrimeric G
proteins. Our laboratory investigates how G protein alpha subunits
transmit signals between receptors and effectors using the combined
approaches of site-specific and random mutagenesis, biochemical
characterization of recombinant alpha subunits expressed in tissue
culture cells, and molecular modeling (see Berlot and Bourne, 1992,
Cell 68: 911-922 and Medina et al., 1996, JBC 271: 24720-24727).
Current projects include: (1) biochemical analysis of mutant alpha
subunits with aberrant responses to receptor stimulation to determine
the mechanisms by which receptors stimulate G proteins, (2) selection
for and characterization of constitutively activated alpha subunits
that cause anchorage-independent growth of fibroblasts to identify
alpha subunit regions involved in activation, and (3) application of
genetic and biochemical techniques to identify novel G protein
effectors involved in cell proliferation. We visualize the
three-dimensional positions of functionally important residues using
the x-ray crystal structures of active and inactive alpha subunits and
of heteotrimeric G protein complexes. These structures were recently
solved in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Sigler at Yale, and there is
ample opportunity to interact with this group to explore issues of G
protein structure and function. Applicants should have a strong
background in biochemistry and/or molecular biology.
This position is funded by an NIH training grant. Therefore U.S
citizenship or permanent residency is required.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW POSITION

AVAILABLE

A position is available to study the molecular genetics of replication
and the cell cycle in the mammalian genome. We use Epstein-Barr and
human papilloma virus sequences as model systems both in vivo and in
vitro to study site-specific initiation and termination of DNA
replication (Cell 58:527, 1989; Mol. Cell. Biol. 11:6268, 1991; J.
Virol. 67:1739, 1993; Mol. Cell. Biol. 15:2893, 1995; J. Biol. Chem.
271:33009, 1996). The replication of globin and immunoglobulin gene
families (Mol. Cell. Biol. 8: 2149 and 4958, 1988; 9:3524, 1989;
10:4314 and 4324, 1990) and the role of replication in oncogene
rearrangements and in development is being investigated. We are
characterizing origins of replication that we have identified in human
rDNA (Mol. Cell. Biol., 13:6600, 1993). Targeted integration mediated
by homologous recombination will be used to modify chromosomal origins
and to determine the sequences critical for origin function. Other
projects include the role of the Locus Control Region (LCR) in the
regulation of replication of globin and immunoglobulin gene loci. The
spatial and temporal organization of DNA replication in mammalian
nuclei is also being studied.

Supported by NIH funding for at least three years. The Albert Einstein
College of Medicine is located in a pleasant, very safe, residential
area of New York.

New York City on Gene Targeting & Transgenic Mice

A fully funded postdoctoral position available is currently available
to study a novel family of murine homeobox genes that are involved in
embryonic development of the mesoderm and nervous system. We are
presently examining the role of this novel gene family through binary
transgenic gain-of-function (using the Cre/Lox system) and
loss-of-function (gene knockout in ES cells) approaches in mice. In
addition, we are studying the enhancer/promoter regions of these genes
using lacZ and hpAP reporters in transgenic mice, as well as examining
the signaling processes involved in the regulation and function of this
novel gene family, in part, through novel gene "knock-in" approches.

Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) Research Network Funded by the
 European Commission

 A Postdoctoral Fellowship in BIOINFORMATICS

No previous background in Biology is required.
The main research objective will be large scale genome analysis
(GeneQuiz project) with a focus on problems of biological interest.
Details of the GeneQuiz project can be found at http://www.embl-heidelberg.de
/~genequiz. Applicants can expect to work as part of a dynamic international
network in the scientific growth area of bioinformatics.

Only for nationals of the European Union or Associated States who wish to
work away from their home country. Applicants should in general (though not
neccessarily) have a Ph.D. and be under 35 years old. The fellowship is not
intended for postdocs already working in Greece.
Starting date is as soon as possible (preferably immediately), duration 2 years.

Applications, including a short curriculum vitae, list of publications (if any), and
(if possible) names and addresses (e.mail) of two referees should be addressed
 (preferably by e.mail) to:

Prof. Stavros J. Hamodrakas
Division of Cell Biology and Biophysics
Department of Biology
University of Athens
Athens 157 01
GREECE
e. mail: shamodr@atlas.uoa.gr

    Fax: +30-1-7231634
Phone: +30-1-7284545 or +30-1-7240091

Details of the fellowship are as follows:

1. The duration of the fellowship is 2 (two) years.
2. Work is going to be carried out in collaboration with
Dr. Christos Ouzounis, a group leader at EBI, Hinxton (Wellcome
Trust Genome Campus,Hinxton, near Cambridge), U.K.
It is expected that the successful applicant will spend some of
his time, especially at the beginning , at EBI for training
    purposes.
The successful candidate will have relative freedom in his research
towards achieving the goals of the TMR project. From my point of
view, I consider especially interesting, the development of
methods to predict protein function from sequence alone.

 3. Financial Details:
It is expected that the net salary of the applicant will be of
the order of 400.000-450.000 drachmas per month (lower limit). This
should be the NET salary after all possible deductions (tax, insurance
    and so on).
For comparison, the net salary at the Assoc. Prof. level in the University
of Athens is of the order of 450.000 drachmas, at the Assist. Prof. level
370.000 drachmas and at the lecturer level 310.000 drachmas.
    These are NET salaries.
The rent for a 2-room furnished flat in Athens is ca. 80.000 drachmas per
    month.
Lunch and dinner at the University canteen ( open 7 -days a week from
September till the end of June) costs 700 drachmas per day.
The canteen is situated at a walking ( 5 min. ) distance from the lab.
A full meal at a restaurant costs, at most (not expensive) restaurants,
    approximately 3000 drachmas.
A single ticket at the public transportation (buses and trolley-buses)
    costs 75 drachmas today.
 4. The fellowship is available immediately (next month).
 5. The computing facilities include:
    1. An SGI INDY workstation with a R5000@180 MHz proccessor,
        96 Mb memory, 6 Gb disks, 24-bit graphics, a CD-ROM, a dat tape
        drive, a floptical disk.
    2. An O2 SGI workstation with a R5000@180 MHz, 32 Mb memory, 2 Gb
       disk, 24-bit graphics and a CD-ROM.
Fortran 77, C and C++ compilers are available.
    3. Unlimited (almost!!) access to a CONVEX supercomputer ( with a
cluster of 8 HP powerful workstations) the main computer of the
University of Athens, with powerful specifications.
    4. Several Pentium and 486 PC's running at more than 100 MHz.
    5. Several printers (laser and ink-jet)
Access to a SUN Spark 4 station is also possible.
All the machines are interconnected and connected to INTERNET with
the appropriate software.

A decision should be made as soon as possible, therefore, immediate response
 is required.
