comparative protein sequence analysis with emphasis
on evolutionary relationships. Much information resides in genomic
sequences that is not presently being extracted using
currently available tools.=20

The work is carried out at the Bay-Paul Center for Comparative Biology and
Molecular Evolution, Marine Biological

Postdoctoral Positions
We seek postdoctoral fellows to study structure-function relationships of
cytochrome P450 and those of related heme enzymes (e.g. nitric oxide
synthase). This position is supported by a long-term (12 - 24 months)
fellowship of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, beginning April,
1998. This fellowship affords foreign researchers a generous opportunity
to conduct research in laboratories at Japanese universities; a round-trip
air ticket (economy), a monthly stipend of 270,000 yen, a settling
allowance of 200,000 yen, a monthly housing allowance of up to 100,000 yen,
a monthly family allowance of 50,000 yen if accompanied by dependence(s)
and insurance coverage for the fellow. Candidates must hold a recent (less
than five years) Ph.D. degree. This laboratory has been interested in
molecular oxygen activation, inter- and intra-electron transfer and
substrate specificities of P450 using genetic engineering techniques and a
three-dimensional model based on the crystal structure of bacterial P450s.
A strong background in bioinorganic chemistry, physical chemistry,
molecular biology, biochemistry, or biophysics is essential. Expertise
with recombinant DNA technique, protein purification, enzymology/kinetics,
NMR, EPR, UV/VIS, CD/MCD, GCMS, stopped flow/flash photolysis or computer
simulation is desirable. Send curriculum vitae and names, FAX numbers and
e-mail addresses of three references to : Dr. Toru Shimizu, Institute for
Chemical Reaction Science, Tohoku University, Sendai 980-77, Japan. FAX:

Offer for post doctoral position in Cell Biology of MHC Class II
Molecules at the Cochin Institute for Molecular Genetics in Paris,
France (French or non-French citizens can apply)

Specific subject : Effects of viral proteins on the antigen presentation
by MHC class II molecules

Qualifications required : The proposed topic is at the interface of
Immunology, Cell Biology and Virology. Expertise in one of these fields
and interests in the others will be required.

Language : French or English

Preliminary requirement : Apply for a post doctoral fellowship

In France, post doctoral fellowships have to be jointly applied by the
candidate and the laboratory. Therefore, this offer aims at first, to
write an application for a post doctoral fellowship. I am a group leader
at the Cochin Institute for Molecular Genetics in Paris (see
http://www.cochin.inserm.fr). I have space available starting December
97. If you are interested, we can apply together for a fellowship
(deadline mid-December 1997).

Research areas for a fellowship application are Effects of viral
proteins on the antigen presentation by MHC class II molecules:
- Effects of the HIV Nef protein on MHC class II trafficking.
- Effects of Nef expression on endocytosis and on retrograde trafficking
of transmembrane proteins.

Recent publications:

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
TRIPLET REPEAT GENETICS

Expansions of trinucleotide repeat sequences form the genetic basis for
13 human hereditary diseases. One of the most perplexing questions in
this field is the mechanism of length alterations in these naturally
occurring sequences. It has been difficult to study the mutational
process in humans, due largely to experimental limitations.

In a successful approach to understanding triplet repeats, my lab has
recently established a yeast genetic assay that monitors expansions and
contractions of trinucleotide sequences (see MCB 17:3382, 1997). To our
knowledge, this is the only genetic assay for triplet repeat mutations
that has been published. Our goal is to understand the mutagenic
mechanism(s) for these interesting elements in yeast. Subsequent
approaches will address the similarities and differences of triplet
repeats between yeast and humans.

One position is available for a project on the instability of triplet
repeats in yeast as a model for human genetic diseases. The ideal
candidate will be productive, self-motivated and experienced with yeast.

A position is available in the department of pathology for an
individual with interest in reproductive molecular medicine. Our
research is focused on elucidating the identity of genes which are
implicated in human endometrial receptivity and bleeding and whose
aberrant expression leads to abnormal endometrial function including
endometrial bleeding and infertility. Among the genes which are being
studied are the novel genes, ebaf (TGFB-4), H1 and the cytotoxic
cytokine, TNF-alpha. The candidate should have extensive experience in
molecular biology including PCR, RT-PCR, cloning, sequencing, Northern
