POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW POSITION

AVAILABLE

A position is available to study the molecular genetics of replication
and the cell cycle in the mammalian genome. We use Epstein-Barr and
human papilloma virus sequences as model systems both in vivo and in
vitro to study site-specific initiation and termination of DNA
replication (Cell 58:527, 1989; Mol. Cell. Biol. 11:6268, 1991; J.
Virol. 67:1739, 1993; Mol. Cell. Biol. 15:2893, 1995; J. Biol. Chem.
271:33009, 1996). The replication of globin and immunoglobulin gene
families (Mol. Cell. Biol. 8: 2149 and 4958, 1988; 9:3524, 1989;
10:4314 and 4324, 1990) and the role of replication in oncogene
rearrangements and in development is being investigated. We are
characterizing origins of replication that we have identified in human
rDNA (Mol. Cell. Biol., 13:6600, 1993). Targeted integration mediated
by homologous recombination will be used to modify chromosomal origins
and to determine the sequences critical for origin function. Other
projects include the role of the Locus Control Region (LCR) in the
regulation of replication of globin and immunoglobulin gene loci. The
spatial and temporal organization of DNA replication in mammalian
nuclei is also being studied.

Supported by NIH funding for at least three years. The Albert Einstein
College of Medicine is located in a pleasant, very safe, residential
area of New York.

A newly established laboratory in molecular immunology at the University of
Rochester Medical School has two open lab technician positions to be filled
between December 1997 and January 1998. Our work will focus on the
mechanisms of B lymphocyte development, activation and leukemogenesis using
gene targeting and molecular immunology techniques.

We are looking for people with at least some experience in any one or more
of the following: molecular/cell biology, immunology, tissue culture or
mouse handling techniques. The lab is jointly held by two young
investigators, one MD and one PhD, who will spend considerable time in the
lab, so there are ample occasions for learning and supervision. Besides
performing experiments, other tasks may include lab management (ordering,
dealing with sales reps, receiving and stocking), making of media and
solutions, supervising and managing a mouse colony. Motivation,
enthusiasm, independence and willingness to learn a must; good humor a plus.

Newsgroup Charter and Moderation Policy:

EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered is to be used for the posting of job
openings in the biological sciences or professional level jobs that
support the work of biological scientists (such as for
computer/systems programming/support). Jobs in both the non-profit
and for-profit sectors may be posted without format restrictions.
For-profit jobs, however, must be for professional level positions
that support biology research or that require the hiring of someone
with biological expertise, i.e., routine administrative jobs in
commercial companies, e.g., secretarial positions at biotech
companies, will not be posted in this forum and should instead be sent
to misc.jobs.offered.

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR JOB AD MULTIPLE TIMES WITHIN A FEW DAYS. The
newsgroup is moderated and sometimes the moderator is delayed in
processing the postings. Sending in duplicates creates additional
work for the moderator who has to start out by looking at and deleting
duplicate posts. Rest assured that your post will go out as soon as
possible if it falls within our charter or you will be contacted if
there is a problem (unless the post is an obvious spam - see below).

PLEASE BE SURE to use descriptive Subject: lines in your job postings.
It also helps to start with the abbreviated job location using the
country code and possibly the state/province, e.g.,

Subject: US/CA Postdoctoral postion in XXX

indicating that the job is in the United States/California. Subject
lines like "Job Opening" do not attract readers to your ad!!

Resumes will not be posted on bionet.jobs.offered. Such postings
should be directed to bionet.jobs.wanted.

			     IMPORTANT!!
Because of the volume of posts to this newsgroup, the moderator will
assume that the readers are familiar with the policy as stated in this
newsgroup charter and will reject without comment any messages that do
not follow the guidelines above. Appeals may be sent to
biosci-help@net.bio.net if one thinks that a posting was incorrectly
omitted. Misdirected resumes will be deleted without comment. It is
the responsibility of the posters, not the moderator, to read the
newsgroup usage instructions for bionet.jobs.wanted and
bionet.jobs.offered.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER - The moderator does not check the content or
accuracy of EMPLOYMENT/bionet.jobs.offered job ads and makes no
warranty, expressed or implied, about the truthfulness or accuracy of
the job descriptions posted on this newsgroup. The moderator's sole
function is to filter out messages that do not appear to conform to
the newsgroup charter above and distribute messages that do appear to
conform to the newsgroup charter. Readers assume all responsibility
for confirming on their own the accuracy of the job descriptions
posted to the newsgroup.

A three yr Wellcome Trust funded postdoc position in;
University of Sheffield
Division of Molecular & Genetic Medicine

Title: Molecular Studies on 5'-3' Exonucleases

Project Outline. All cells contain 5'-3' exonucleases (5'-nucleases) which
are required for DNA replication, recombination and repair. Genes encoding
many prokaryotic 5'-nucleases have been identified and they show a number
of highly similar sequence elements implying a conserved biochemical
mechanism of action. The 5'-3' exonuclease domain of E. coli DNA polymerase
I (ECPolI) has major roles in replication, DNA repair and recombination,
including processing the Okazaki fragments formed on the lagging strand
during DNA synthesis. A number of workers have shown that 5'-3' exonuclease
genes are required for cell viability. A 5'-3' exonuclease activity must
exist in all cells, if only to process Okazaki fragments.
In addition to simple exonucleolytic hydrolysis of DNA, DNA/RNA duplexes
are also hydrolysed (RNaseH activity). Furthermore, several members of this
family of exonucleases possess an intriguing structure-specific
endonuclease activity which is manifested by the ability to cleave branched
DNA or flap structures.
We wish to study the mechanisms by which the 5'-3' exonucleases bind and
hydrolyse their substrates. This will be achieved using a combination of
classical biochemical techniques, differential chemical modification,
site-directed mutagenesis, DNA binding and kinetic studies. The hypothesis
will be tested that a novel structural motif (the helical arch), discovered
by this group, is involved in DNA binding (Ceska, Sayers, Stier & Suck,
Nature, [1996] 382, 90-93). Valuable information on this fundamentally
important area of DNA biosynthesis, which will serve as a model for similar
processes in higher organisms, will be gathered
The generality of these results will be tested by introducing critical
mutations so identified into the 5'-nuclease domain from H. influenzae. To
determine whether or not the helical arch motif is a widespread DNA-binding
element, crystal trials will also begin on the overproduced H. influenzae
5'-exonuclease domain (in collaboration with Prof. D. Rice, University of
Sheffield) and attempts to crystallize T5 and H. influenzae exonucleases
with oligonucleotides will be carried out.

The Post. We seek a motivated, adaptable postdoctoral scientist with
experience in one or more of the following areas to join this exciting
project; protein-DNA interactions, molecular biology, biophysical
chemistry, enzymology or biochemistry. The Department of Molecular &
Genetic Medicine is well equipped with core oligonucleotide synthesis,
automated DNA sequencing, protein purification and phosphoimaging systems.
Facilities such as 750 MHz NMR, X-ray crystallography, BiaCore and
Electrospray Mass spec are cited nearby. The Department received a 4 rating
in the last RAE.

A post doctoral position in molecular and cellular biology is available in
Villejuif, France to developp studies on gene regulation by WT1/EGR1 in
cancer progression.
We have shown that thrombospondin I, one of the major anti angiogenic
molecule is repressed in cells overexpressing c-Jun by an indirect pathway,
involving a secreted factor and interaction of WT1 with the thrombospondin
I promoter. We now develop conditional expression systems to study in cell
culture and in vivo the role of WT1 and thrombospondin in cancer
progression. Our Lab belongs to the Centre National de la Recherche
Scientifique (CNRS). We are located in a pleasant place very close to Paris
(connected by metro). Candidates with a Ph.D. degree in research fields
related to these areas are encouraged to apply.

Post-Doctoral Research Associate
College of Veterinary Medicine
Texas A&M University

Virology, immunology, molecular biology studies with a highly
infectious coronavirus of poultry. The applicant should have a Ph.D. or
the equivalent in at least one of the relevant disciplines. The overall
objective of the research is to determine the role of cytotoxic T
lymphocyte responses in infectious bronchitis virus pathogenesis.
Opportunities include development of the avian model through
manipulation of the avian immune system. Research will concentrate on
molecular aspects of cellular immunity in defining epitopes and in
cloning and characterizing cytokines. This model, although highly
versatile has been underexploited and offers many opportunities in
producing valuable research in understanding the interactions between
viral infection and cellular immunity.
Texas A&M University provides a highly integrated atmosphere in
molecular biology, infectious diseases, immunology and poultry science.
