IRRI
International Rice Research Institute

Position announcement for
Affiliate Scientist (Plant Breeder)

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is seeking a Plant Breeder to
coordinate its project on the development of a perennial upland rice plant.
IRRI, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural
Research (CGIAR), is a nonprofit, autonomous organization based in the
Philippines and engaged in research and training on rice-related technology.

The Perennial Upland Rice Project is one of IRRI's "New Frontier" Projects and
represents part of a program to develop sustainable farming systems for the
uplands. The development of a perennial upland rice plant, which would assure
a permanent ground cover, minimizing soil exposure to erosion as well as
providing a source of food, could contribute to the establishment of sustain-
able cropping systems for areas highly susceptible to erosion. The first phase
of the project ends in June 1998. A second phase has been supported based on
the progress of the first phase, to a further 3 years.

The successful candidate, who would begin the appointment as an Affiliate
Scientist in June 1998, will continue the research initiated during phase one.
Major activities are to:

- Evaluate the interspecific hybrid progenies that express perenniality at
different upland sites and to improve them through backcrosses and intercrosses;
 - Transfer perennial traits from O. rufipogon to cultivars of O. sativa
adapted to the uplands and to evaluate the material in upland conditions;
 - Explore the possibility of improving the yield of naturally introgressed
populations of wild perennial rice;
- In collaboration with a molecular biologist, tag the genes responsible for
perenniality and resistance to nematodes in an interspecific population
involving O. longistaminata and O. sativa; and
- Develop a population of O. sativa/O.rufipogon that segregates for perennial-
ity and to map the genes of interest

The candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including
molecular biologists, pathologists, and physiologists. The work involves
interaction with NARS and other AROs.

Candidates should have a Ph D in plant breeding with experience in rice
breeding. Experience with upland rice would be advantageous, as well as in
techniques of evaluation of genetic diversity. Understanding of molecular
markers technology is necessary. Fluency in English is
required.

Salary and perquisites for the position are internationally competitive. IRRI
provides a gender-sensitive environment and welcomes women applicants.

Send a comprehensive curriculum vitae and names, addresses, and fax numbers or
e-mail addresses of three referees by 15 January 1998 to:

Dr. K. S. Fischer
Deputy Director for Research
