A postdoctoral position is available for studies on CD40L-macrophage
interactions in the Division of Infectious Diseases of the Department of
Medicine and the UCSD AIDS Research Institute. Building on our recent
finding that CD40L activates macrophages to produce HIV-suppressive
beta-chemokines (PNAS, in press), we are evaluating the regulation of
CD40L on T cells in HIV infection, tuberculosis, and malignancy. These
studies utilize a variety of molecular, immunological, biochemical, and
microbiological approaches in a modern, well-equipped laboratory. The
successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of current biomedical
research, a strong foundation in immunology and molecular biology,

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN
POSTDOCTORAL AND SCIENTIST POSITIONS

A Postdoctoral and a Scientist Position are available to study
phosphoinositide and protein kinase mediated cellular signal
transduction mechanisms. The work has two major focuses:
Phosphoinositide signal transduction in nuclei and regulation of nuclear
protein kinases and cellular functions by this signaling pathway; and
the regulation of phosphoinositide second messenger generation by
receptors, in particular receptors which stimulate synthesis of
mitogenic and antiapoptic messengers.
A wide variety of experimental approaches are used to study these
cellular signaling pathways. Thus, experience in either cell biology,
biochemistry, and/or molecular biology is important. The successful
applicants must be able to work both independently and synergistically
as a member of a research team.

Two Postdoctoral Positions Open

The Laboratory of Genetics of the National Institute on Aging, NIH, is
devoted to genetic, biochemical and molcular biology approaches to aging
as an integrated part of human development. The Laboratory is
established as of October 1, 1997 in newly remodeled space at the
Bayview campus of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.

Two postodoctoral positions are available in Laboratory of
Dr.Weidong Wang. The research focuses on structural and functional
studies of the newly-identified SWI/SNF complexes in mammals. These are
ATP-dependent, multisubunit complexes involved in regulation of gene
expression by remodeling chromatin structures during development and
differentiation. We have recently accomplished cloning of all the
subunits within the major form of the complex from human KB cells. The
approaches include, but not limited to: purification of tissue-specific
and novel chromatin-remodeling complexes, microsequencing and cloning of
new subunits, analysis of the roles of each subunit during the
chromatin-remodeling process, studies of the biological function of the
complex during development, differentiation and aging.

These positions will have at their disposition extensive mouse
facilities and expertise in embryology. The Laboratory also has mounted
state-of-the-art genome approaches, including large-insert clone
screening and sequencing, cDNA analyses, and corresponding informatics
expertise.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

TITLE: Postdoctoral Fellow

A postdoctoral fellowship is presently available in INRA (National
Institute of Agronomical Research, Dijon, France) for a qualified candidate
to conduct research on the determination of C and N flux circuating in
nodulated roots of leguminous plants.

Our team (Ecophysiology team of the Agronomy Station) is working since a
number of years on the acquisition of knowledge concerning the functioning
of indeterminate leguminous crops (Pea, Soybean). In these species, several
sinks are competing on the plant for assimilates as a function of time.
Vegetative meristems (apex, young leaves) then reproductive meristems
(flowers, young pods and seeds) are simultaneously present on the plant as
a consequence of the vegetative development which continues during the
reproductive phase. In order to understand the functioning of leguminous
crops and the elaboration of their yield we need to establish, taking into
account the phenology, the way (1) the crop is acquiring C and N from the
environment, (2) the dynamics of seed set and the seed metabolism (C and N
accumulation), (3) the partitioning of the assimilates between the plant
organs based on the potential demand of each sink and the assimilate
availability in the plant. The final objectives of our work are to propose
a dynamic model concerning the fonctioning of indeterminate leguminous
crops in the absence of limiting factors.

Position description : The Post Doc will carry on research (collection,
analysis, and reporting of controlled environment and field studies) on
topic 1 and specially on N acquisition by the symbiotic leguminous plants
using pea plant as model plant. Our team wants to quantify the N flux
entering into the plant (uptake kinetics of N assimilation and symbiotic
fixation of atmospheric N), to determine the nature of the C and N flux
(composition, intensity and duration) coming from the aerial parts of the
plant which feeds the nodulated roots and the C and N flux recycled by the
roots to the plant. We need to quantify and characterize the modifications
of these fluxes which might arise from the appearance (according to the
phenology) or the absence (experimental treatments such as defoliation or
pod removal) of competing sinks for the assimilates. The Post Doc should
use his knowledge and experimental skills for such research : he will have
to take into account the incoming N fluxes (N assimilation or symbiotic
fixation), the C and N flux coming from aerial parts (phloem sap) or
recycled by roots (xylem sap) and will have to use sap harvesting technics,
isotopic labellings (14C/15N) on plants in controlled environment
(labelling chamber). Research will also be conducted in fields.

Team : Our young team (mean age of 30) is composed of two researchers, two
PhDs and 4 technicians. The post doc will work in close collaboration with
one of the PhD.

Facilities : Our laboratory has growth chambers, greenhouses, an
experimental farm for field experiments, a labelling chamber (14C/15N
labelling), a CHN analyzer, a coulter multisizer, scintillation counter,
HPLC... We collaborate with a laboratory which possesses a triple collector
mass spectrometer and does our 15N content analysis.

Location : Dijon is located in the North-East of France, at 1.5 hour by
train of Paris, and Lyon, close to Switzerland and Germany. Our region is
well know for its landcape, architecture and of course the Burgundy wines.

Starting date : as soon as possible.

Qualifications and Responsibilities:
- Ph.D. degree in Agronomy or Plant Physiology or Ecophysiology.
- Previous research experience in Plant Physiology and/or Agronomy.
- The post-doc does not need to be fluent in French but should be fluent in
English.

Stipend: Salary of 11 000 French Francs, including social insurance, health
coverage.

Forward: (1) a resume/curriculum vitae; (2) list of reprints; (3) a cover
letter outlining your background experience, interest in this research to:

A grant-funded, postdoctoral position is currently available in the
laboratory of Associate Professor John Piletz, Ph.D., based in the
Division of Neurobiology & Behavior Research at the University of
Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), in Jackson, MS. I am seeking either
a MOLECULAR BIOLOGIST or a PROTEIN BIOCHEMIST to study the imidazoline
receptor. This position may be filled either at the Research Associate
or Senior Research Associate level. Salaries are competitive with major
US medical schools. We are based in a modern 4-yr-old research
building, and life in Jackson is pleasant and affordable.
The Laboratory of Molecular Psychiatry which Dr. Piletz leads, has
an active research program on imidazoline receptors (IR). These are
novel drug receptors which have not yet been fully isolated or purified,
but their pharmacology has been extensively studied and they appear to
compose a family of drug binding proteins of varying molecular weights.
These
putative receptors modulate sympathetic outflow - predominatly at the
brainstem level-
via activation initiated by imidazoline compounds (agonists at the
imidazoline receptors). Therefore, imidazoline receptors probably also
modulators of stress.
Our laboratory discovered that IR are up-regulated in depressed
patients (both in brain autopsy tissue and in platelets from patients).
Based on this observation and on other lines of evidence, we have
obtained a grant focused on IR in depressed patients. The grant
involves a collaboration with the Chairman of the Dept. of Psychiatry at
UMMC, Dr. Angelos Halaris. Yet, this is only half - the clinical half -
of our project.
The other half of our laboratory (for which we are now advertizing
for this postdoctoral position) is directed towards characterizing the
imidazoline receptor at the molecular level. We already have two
Post-docs working on this level. We are the first group to report the
cloning of a cDNA that expresses a protein with some properties similar
to an imidazoline receptor which may explain the novel actions of
clonidine (believed to be an agonist at the IR-1 subtype). A major
pharmaceutical company is funding this project. Another grant from the
NIH will involve insitu hybridization histochemistry.
For a more complete review of this "up-and-coming" field, please
visit the Imidazoline Research Club homepage -
http://www.mmcc.monash.edu.au/phimr/ireceptor/
By virtue of my laboratory's multifaceted nature, the successful
post-doctoral candidate will receive a breadth of research training and
experiences. Our research team covers the basic, clinical, and
pharmaceutical arenas; and therefore, postdocs from my lab can go into
three career paths (academics, biotechniology, or clinical research).
Therefore, post-doctoral fellows in my laboratory are generally able to
find full-time positions after 2-3 years training.
The successful postdoctoral candidate should have expertise in
molecular biological techniques, or protein purification procedures
and/or transfection techniques. If interested in applying for this
position, please fax or e-mail your cv and three letters of
recommendation to me, at the address below:

Post Doctoral Position in New York City on Gene Targeting &
Transgenic Mice

A fully funded postdoctoral position available is currently
available to study a novel family of murine homeobox genes
that are involved in embryonic development of the mesoderm
and nervous system. We are presently examining the role of
this novel gene family through transgenic approaches in mice
using the Cre/loxP system and gene knockout in ES cells. In
addition, we are studying the enhancer/promoter regions of
these genes using lacZ in transgenic mice, as well as
examining the signaling processes involved in the regulation
and function of this novel gene family, in part, through
novel gene "knock-in" approaches.

Salary level will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience.

Applications will be accepted until July 1, 1998 or until
the position is filled. Interested candidates should submit
a resume and a list of three references to:

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND GENETICS OF RNA

Two POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS and several openings for
Ph.D. GRADUATE STUDENTS are available in the laboratory of
Dr. Philip R. Cunningham to study the MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
AND GENETICS OF RNA. The potential of RNA as both a drug
and as a target for drugs has stimulated an enormous
amount of new research on RNA in the biomedical
community.

We have recently developed a genetic system to
investigate the catalytic role of ribosomal RNA in protein
synthesis. Our long-term goal is to facilitate the
development of new, highly specific antibiotics for the
treatment of microbial diseases.

Our system allows rapid identification and analysis of
mutations in ribosomal RNA genes which affect specific
aspects of protein synthesis. This system also allows the
elucidation of RNA structure/function relationships in
vivo through genetic selection. Other applications of
the system are in development.

Familiarity in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry
and microbiology preferred. Salary depends upon level
of experience.

A POST-DOCTORAL fellowship investigating the cell biology of lymphocytes
is available immediately. The overall goal of the lab is to understand
how changes in the function of the endoplasmic reticulum during
thymocyte development can regulate both expression and function of the T
cell antigen receptor (TCR) complex and as a result have profound
effects on T cell development. Particular research interests include
understanding: 1) the mechanism whereby immature thymocytes determine if
the TCR beta locus has rearranged properly; 2) control of signal
transduction through the pre-TCR and alpha/beta-TCR complexes; 3) how
TCR expression is controlled during development by trans-acting factors
in the endoplasmic reticulum; and 4) the role of tyrosine kinases in
regulating protein transport. I seek candidates that are bright and
motivated. While experience in molecular biology and an understanding of
both immunology and cell biology would be preferred, they are not
essential. Interested applicants should send their CV as well as the
names of three individuals who are familiar with the applicants research

April 6, 1998
Job Opportunity:

Research Assistant/Technician
Molecular Cardiology Research Institute
Hematology-Oncology
New England Medical Center
Tufts University School of Medicine

We have an opening for a research assistant to work in the field of
peptide-protein recognition and structure and molecular signaling. The
project involves structure-function studies of the interaction of
peptides with peptide receptors and the human thrombin receptor.
Insight into the molecular interactions between these peptides and their
cognate receptors should provide leads for the development of
anti-thrombotic agents.

The research assistant will use molecular biology techniques to
construct recombinant receptors and G proteins and express these
proteins in E. coli, yeast, and mammalian cell culture. Receptor-G
protein pairs will be characterized by SDS-PAGE, Westerns, Flow
cytometry, and fluorescence. Biochemical and genetic studies of
receptor, G proteins, ligand, and downstream regulators will greatly aid
in understanding how these receptors activate mammalian signaling
pathways. Peptide synthesis and HPLC purification will also be
performed. Small animal studies (rat, hamster, mouse) of clot-busting
agents and their effects on platelet and endothelial cell function will
be conducted.

The research assistant will be trained in all of the above techniques
and will work closely with other members of a new research group. Ample
opportunities will arise for independent design and implementation of
experiments.

Qualifications for this position include a B.S. or B.A. in Biochemistry
or related areas and prior laboratory experience from coursework or
independent study. Recent college graduates with excellent analytical
skills and problem solving abilities are especially encouraged to
apply. Competitive salary and benefits will be offered.
