Postdoctoral Positions in Gene Therapy

Two NIH-funded postdoctoral research positions are available for individuals with Ph.D. or equivalent degrees and experience in molecular biology to participate in the development of viral vectors to deliver genetic therapy. This project has two basic targets: (1) to prevent the initiation of HIV-1 infection, and alter the course of established HIV-1 infection; and (2) to alter the course of tumor development and cellular proliferation.

Depending on productivity and achievement in these studies, these positions can develop into junior faculty*research or tenure-track*positions.

Experience working with cell culture and nucleic acids is necessary: cloning, PCR, DNA and RNA isolation, manipulation and analysis. Expertise with protein analyses, SDS-PAGE, and Western blotting is highly desirable.

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Microbiology

POST-DOCTORAL POSITIONS AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY:

Position available for immediate work on development of
products for immunoprophylaxis and therapy of bacterial
diseases of humans and domestic animals. Work in our
laboratory is focused primarily on the pathogenesis of
infections by Gram-positive bacteria, including
Clostridium perfringens, Corynebacterium
pseudotuberculosis, and Arcanobacterium pyogenes.
The current project involves passive immunoprophylaxis
of Clostridium difficile infections and therapy of
Helicobacter pylori infections. The general approach
involves immunization of chickens to produce immune IgY
in yolk. In the case of C. difficile, approaches will
probably be directed toward genetic toxoids of toxins A
and B, as well as somatic antigens of vegetative cells
and spores. Numerous potential immunogens of H. pylori
have been identified through the genome sequencing
project.

The project requires an individual to identify candidate
immunogens, clone and express appropriate genes, and
work with other project personnel to achieve efficacious
antibody responses in chickens. Opportunities will be
available for basic work in microbial pathogenesis and
procaryotic genetics.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in
microbiology, or a similar discipline, with experience
in molecular biology. Expertise in tissue culture and/or
animal handling will be an advantage.

FlyBase Curator Vacancy:

The FlyBase group at the University of Cambridge is seeking candidates for
a literature curator. The group is headed by Michael Ashburner, in the
Department of Genetics, and includes three literature curators and one
computer scientist. The group is primarily responsible for curating
genetic data from Drosophila research papers.

Literature curation involves extracting the relevant genetic data from
publications into a series of templates to generate records which are
subsequently entered into the database.

Candidates, who can be either post-docs or well qualified graduates, should
have at least a good honours degree in genetics, or a biological science
specialising in genetics, and preferably research experience with
Drosophila. An interest in Drosophila research is essential, as are good
communication skills. The job will require concentrated library work with
a high level of attention to detail. Previous computing experience is not
essential. Necessary training will be provided on the job.

The FlyBase group meets for several days twice a year in the USA:
applicants should be prepared to attend these meetings, for which
expenses will be paid.

The project is funded by the National Institute of Health, USA, though the
successful applicant will be an employee of, and paid through, the
University of Cambridge, with the usual benefits (generous pension scheme
etc). The post is available starting during November 1998, and will be
funded initially for one year with a possibility of extension if all are
content.

Pay will be in the University's Research Assistant/Research Associate
ranges, depending on age and experience.

Applications (including a CV) or questions should be sent to:

Postdoctoral Research Associate positions are currently available
in my laboratory to participate in NIH-funded studies on long-range
transactivation by locus control regions and signaling pathways that
control hematopoiesis. Questions being investigated include:

What coactivators mediate long-range transactivation by the human
ß-globin LCR?
        (Bresnick, E.H. & Tze, L. (1997) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 94,
4566-4571; Forsberg, E. C., Lam, L.T., Yang, X.-J., Nakatani, Y. &
Bresnick, E.H. (1997) Biochemistry 36, 15918 15924)

How is long-range transactivation modulated by hematopoietic
signaling pathways?
        (Versaw, W.K. & Bresnick, E.H. (1998) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A.
95, 8756-8760).

How does the Notch signaling pathway modulate hematopoiesis?
        (Lam, L.T. & Bresnick, E.H. (1998) J. Biol. Chem., in press).

ONLY CANDIDATES WITH FIRST AUTHOR PUBLICATIONS IN FIRST-RATE
JOURNALS WILL BE CONSIDERED. Potential applicants should submit a brief
description of research interests, a curriculum vitae, and the names of
three individuals for recommendations to:

Post-doctoral positions available

Two post-doctoral fellowships in molecular evolution and
computational biology are available at CARB, to begin any time
after December 1998, and to continue two years or more depending
on success of the projects. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D.
in a relevant field, solid computer skills, and significant
experience with theoretical, computational, or quantitative
approaches to problems in evolution, molecular biology, or
bioinformatics. Some freedom in the choice of projects is
possible, within three areas of interest: i) the evolutionary
history of introns and intron-containing genes in eukaryotes;
ii) the development of software tools and database systems
tailored for molecular evolution research; and iii) exploration
of the possible and actual influence of non-selective factors
in evolution, particularly mutational biases.

Please contact me for further information on the positions and
the research projects. I will post this message again in a few
weeks when this information becomes available on the WWW.
Applicants may send a c.v., 2-page description of relevant
research training and experience, and contact information for
three personal references to: Dr. Arlin Stoltzfus, Dept.
Biochemistry, Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, B3H 4H7 Canada
