PH.D. IN DEVELOPMENTAL NEUROBIOLOGY.
BBSRC STUDENTSHIP AVAILABLE NOW.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 30TH JUNE 1999
BBSRC Studentship: Starting October 1999
Neurodevelopment Group, Department of Genetics, Downing Street,
Cambridge, UK

Our interest is to understand how the nervous system is organised. In
the embryo, when the first few axons begin to extend, a spectacular
choreography of glial migration and growth cone extension takes place.
These first steps are characterised by an initial phase of independent
cell migration and differentiation, followed by a phase of close
neuron-glial contact. Neuron-glia interactions are in fact necessary
for the formation of the axon-glial bundles.
In vertebrates, neuron-glia interactions can be responsible for cell
migration, survival, proliferation and differentiation of neurons
and/or glia. However, little is still known about how this takes place
during normal development and which are the molecules that exert these
roles. Drosophila offers, as well as powerful genetics, the unique
advantage of allowing non-invasive in vivo manipulation of the nervous
system with cellular specificity. We aim to dissect the diverse
cellular effects of neuron-glia interactions and identify genes
involved in these processes.
We combine a diversity of genetic approaches and targeted ablation, to
get at potential candidate genes and assay their functions.
The homeo-box containing gene engrailed is very conserved, and it is
expressed during segmentation, limb formation and nervous system
development of all organisms looked at so far. We would like to
understand what are the different roles played by this gene that have
been so important to development and evolution.

Title: Dynamics Engineer - Biological Systems Modeler
Company: Entelos
City: Menlo Park
State: CA
Job # 410

JOB DESCRIPTION
We have job openings on our Biological Systems Modeling team. The ideal
candidate will have:
· A Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Chemical
Engineering, or
Mechanical Engineering
· Passion for learning and innovation in a multidisciplinary,
entrepreneurial environment
· Strong interest in biology
· Coursework and/or research in control theory (classical and modern)
· Ability to translate messy real world problems into compelling
mathematical models
· Experience in developing complex algorithms (any language)
· Background in problem formulation using advanced analytical software tools
(e.g., Mathematica)
· An interest in teaching with significant experience in academic or
professional settings
· Experience in working with advisers/consultants, or academic
collaborations.

The primary responsibility for the Biological Systems Modeler position
initially will be the translation
of dynamic biological processes into systems of nonlinear ordinary
differential equations. This
translation involves working within extended research teams (other modelers,
Entelos life scientists,
and outside advisors) to integrate broad multidisciplinary data regarding
the many biological systems
that play a role in a particular disease. Using proprietary Entelos
methodology and software, the
modeler designs mathematical structures which (1) are consistent with the
known data regarding
isolated biological elements, and (2) when integrated give rise to the
complex behaviors consistent
with integrated biological systems in both healthy and disease states.

The Modeler's responsibilities will continue to evolve in the levels of
complexity as the person works
in this position. One of the requirements necessitates reading and
distilling a great number of
scientific journal articles. Participation in and leading various types of
development and review
meetings, documenting research in both electronic notebooks and
presentations, and working with both Entelos
advisors and customers to develop, refine, and explain the models is an
essential part of this position.

Additionally Modelers will participate in the formulation of research plans
with Entelos management and
be responsible for model development. Modelers are also expected to
participate in a number of
ongoing internal efforts to establish and document the guidelines for best
practices for all of Entelos Research
and Development efforts.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION
Entelos, Inc. is pioneering a new class of computer-based tools called

prioritize the best therapeutic and
diagnostic strategies for tackling complex, chronic, and degenerative
diseases.
The company's vision is to apply advanced engineering principles to problems
in biology and medicine.
Entelos' technology foundations were built over the past 8 years working
with pharmaceutical

Scientist in PCR Technology
Company: DNA Polymerase Technology
City: St. Louis
State: MO
Job #GJ424

JOB DESCRIPTION
Ph.D. scientist wanted to help research improved PCR technology. Most
improvements we
have in mind are alterations to Klentaq1 DNA polymerase. Most of these
could be ported
to full-length Taq if successful. If you have a good idea, you can share in
royalties.

Useful skills include microbiology, PCR, DNA sequencing, computer
programming on
several platforms. General work to manage the lab and carry on the company
business
of supplying Klentaq1 may well be necessary, especially at first. Later,
production and
supply of the new variants will, hopefully, be part of the job. Publication
record that will
impress reviewers of SBIR and STTR grants to NIH and NSF a plus.
