Postdoctoral fellowship in Plant Molecular Genetics

Topic: Validation of "a candidate gene / disease resistance QTL =
co-localisation" in pepper

Context: A one-year postdoctoral position, with possible renewal, is =
currently available for a non-French citizen to join the molecular =
biology laboratory of the INRA Genetics and Breeding of Fruit and =
Vegetable Center in Montfavet (near Avignon, South of France, =
http://www.avignon.inra.fr/sapm/sapm0.html). The successful candidate =
will collaborate with the "pepper group" and the "molecular group" (e.g. =
V. Lefebvre, A. Palloix, C. Caranta=85 in Montfavet). The candidate will =
join a team of graduate students and postdocs working on related =
projects and will have access to the infrastructure of genomics and =
computational tools available at INRA.

Background: Our interests focus on plant disease resistance and =
particularly on polygenic resistance in pepper. Five years ago, our =
group initiated research on molecular and functional characterisation of =
disease resistance loci in pepper using the candidate gene approach. =
Several co-localisations between candidate genes and disease resistance =
loci have been discovered (Pflieger et al, 1999). In particular a =
co-localisation between a defence gene and a QTL controlling =
Phytophthora capsici resistance explained a large part of the phenotypic =
variation (Pflieger et al, in prep). Complementary experiments are =
planned to validate the involvement of this gene in the P. capsici =
resistance (kinetics of transcriptional and translational expression in =
healthy and infected tissue, fine mapping, transient transformation=85).

Salary: between 10000 and 14000 French Francs gross per month according =
to the experience of the candidate.

Candidates should have experience in molecular biology and a strong =
background in genetics. Interests in statistics, computer usage and =
experience in pathology and cellular biology will be appreciated. =
English language is required. Some knowledge of French will be helpful.

Applicants should send or e-mail curriculum vitae and names and e-mail =
addresses of references to Dr. V=E9ronique Lefebvre =

A post-doctoral research position is available to work on the role of
cytoplasmic dynein in mitosis in the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena
thermophila. The project will build on our recent results (see Lee et
al.,
1999, Mol. Biol. Cell 10: 771-784) that demonstrated that DYH1 is
required
for proper chromosome segregation during micronuclear mitosis.
Experiments
will include localization of Dyh1 during mitosis and gene replacement
studies in which modified dynein genes will be introduced into cells.

The position is open immediately and is funded for at least two years.
Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Leadership Position for Clinical Epidemiologist/Biostatistician in
Cardiovascular Research
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

An excellent opportunity for high productivity in clinical research
awards.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has been awarded a generous grant to fund an
innovative research program in the outcomes of subclinical
atherosclerosis. This study will focus on electron beam CT, a new
modality which provides the earliest known definitive diagnostic
demonstration of the presence of coronary atherosclerosis, and in
determining the relative importance of this new technique and its
appropriate role in early disease detection and patient management. The
epidemiologist/biostatistician will play a leading role in this research
program, participating in study design, data analysis and data
management including the development of the large database which will
include clinical, biochemical, and electron beam CT data, as well as
data from nuclear cardiology and genetic testing on some patient
cohorts.

Our research team is comprised of four physician investigators, a
research medical physicist, several research scientists, computer
programmers and research assistants. The team has published over 200
papers over the last 22 years in peer reviewed journals and is well
funded. We have been responsible for the development of a large
database dealing with the noninvasive assessment of risk in patients
with known or suspected coronary artery disease. We have assembled one
of the largest databases in the country with approximately 400 variables
per patient, including clinical, exercise, nuclear cardiology, and
follow-up assessments in approximately 19,000 patients. Additionally,
we are collaborating with two other centers with a total database of
approximately 50,000 patients who have been followed for at least one
year for subsequent cardiac events following testing. The epi/biostat
recruit will also work with us in the analysis of this large database to
allow the determination of the appropriate cost-effective applications
of various kinds of noninvasive testing in coronary artery disease.

The applicant should have extensive research experience and be able to
plan and conduct a large clinical study. The individual should have a
doctoral degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field. The
salary would be competitive with other major institutions. Academic
affiliation is encouraged and time for teaching, if desired, would be
available. Send CV and at least three references to Daniel Berman,

Post Doctoral position, available immediately. A post doctoral position is available immediately for the investigation of
prion protein expression in yeast. Transmembrane forms of epitope-tagged fusions predominate and the orientation
of insertion essentially follows the pattern established in mammalian microsomes. We are
investigating the influences on topology of mutations in both charged residues and in disease-associated
conformational determinants (e.g., p105L, A117V) adjacent to the conser
