Craniofacial and Skeletal Diseases
Larry W. Fisher, PhD

A family of small, integrin-binding proteins are made by normal skeletal cells. Furthermore, at least two (bone sialoprotein and osteopontin) are strongly up regulated in osteotropic cancers. We are studying the roles these proteins play in normal mineralized matrices and the selective advantages they may confer on cancer cells. We are interested in the role these proteins play in signal transduction and in the control of complement. Applicants must have a PhD, MD or DDS and less than five years of postdoctoral experience. A strong background in molecular biology and biochemistry is required. Craniofacial and Skeletal Diseases Branch, NIDCR, Building 30, Room 228, 10 Center Drtive MSC 4320, Bethesda, MD, 20892.

responsibility to delineate the coastal boundary of the nation. This
boundary, is of critical national significance in that it delineates the
boundary between state and federal lands, and is the basis for the
computation of the Territorial Sea, the Exclusive Economic Zone, and the High
Seas. NGS also maps the Mean High Water (MHW) line which is used as the
land/sea boundary on official US government marine navigation charts. These
shorelines are often used to support real property litigations.
Consequently, they must be accurate horizontally and must be defensible
with regard to the national positional datum, the North American Datum of
1983 (NAD83).
Over the past few years, advances in digital photogrammetry, Synthetic
Aperture Radar (SAR), imaging spectroscopy (hyperspectral data), and in
Laser ranging (LIDAR) have made it possible to re-examine the conventional
approach to shoreline mapping. NGS maintains a small, but active research
program designed to evaluate the use of these and other
technologies for integration into the production of coastal mapping
manuscripts.
The Intern would serve directly on the staff of the Chief, Remote Sensing
Division and will become a member of the NGS Remote Sensing R&D Lab, which
is managed as a virtual research laboratory by the NGS Chief
Photogrammetrist and Senior Remote Sensing Engineer. The Intern would
become intimately involved in all facets of the evaluation of new
technologies for the production of shoreline manuscripts. This work will
involve a significant amount of data processing on Unix-based workstations
and on Windows NT-based softcopy workstations. This internship would
provide an exposure to four of the most exciting technologies emerging in
the coastal mapping community (digital photogrammetry, SAR, LIDAR, and
Imaging Spectroscopy) and provide the opportunity for the individual to
contribute to the process of introducing these technologies into a
production environment. Aside from these projects, the Intern may be
assigned to work with data designed to
produce a different project, airport obstruction charts.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate would possess a recent masters degree
in engineering, mapping, or earth sciences; although undergraduate degrees
will also be considered. MUST BE A US CITIZEN, NO EXCEPTIONS! Candidates
should possess exceptional analytical and computer skills and have
familiarity operating in the Unix and Windows NT environments. Knowledge
of geographic information systems )GIS, photogrammetry and remote sensing,
or in surveying and mapping technologies is helpful. Applicants possessing
skills with the following software package are especially encouraged:
ERDAS Imagine, IDL, ENVI, SOCET SET and Softplotter.

Outreach Program Assistant
Location — Charleston, SC
Sponsored by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Description: The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration's (NOAA) Coastal Services Center is to foster and sustain
the environmental and economic well-being of the coast by linking people,
information, and technology. The Center works with various branches of NOAA
and other federal agencies to bring information, services, and technology
to the nation's coastal resource managers. The Coastal Management Services
branch provides, in part, services and support to the Center and its
external clients in the form of training, education, and outreach.
The Outreach Program with the Coastal Management Services branch serves the
external client community by providing assistance in coastal management and
policy issues, facilitating communication between and among states and the
Center, and coordinating programs to assist state clients in building their
own internal capacity. The selected intern will be directly integrated into
the Outreach staff to provide valuable assistance, and in some cases
leadership, with a number of different coastal management projects that
meet the mission of the program.
The position involves assisting in and coordinating several on-going
Outreach projects and activities:
* NOAA Coastal Management Fellowship program-updating home page, drafting

* 'Islands Coral Education' web site-developing and maintaining information.
* Coastal Tool Discussion Group-coordinating and monitoring group.
The Coastal Services Center and its parent organization maintain a high
level of interaction with the users and managers of the coastal
environment. The Intern would gain experience and develop contacts through
interaction with staff and managers of state coastal zone management
programs, National Estuarine Research Reserves, and National Marine
Sanctuaries. In addition, the Intern would work directly with the National
and state Sea Grant offices and other NOAA offices, especially those
individuals within the National Ocean Service's Office of Ocean and Coastal
Resource Management.
Through this opportunity, the Intern would develop an understanding of
coastal and marine affairs and how the various issues are applied at the
state and local level. Many of the projects the Intern would assist with
involve staff from all over the Center, providing the Intern with exposure
to remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), web design and
management, and database development. In addition, the Intern would have
opportunities to participate in in-house technical courses such as a
certified ArcView training class.
Finally, the Intern would gain invaluable experience coordinating multiple

Dear Sir, Could you please put this announcement on your network? Thank you
very much,
Dr. Rients Niks
================

At the Laboratory of Plant Breeding, Wageningen University, Netherlands, we
offer a position for a student to carry out

				PhD-thesis research

We offer a 4-years job (salary from Dfl 2261 to max. Dfl 4037,- per month) to
carry out research on the ALW/NWO financed research project

"Genetic dissection of prehaustorial resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia hordei)
in barley (Hordeum vulgare)"

The researcher to be appointed should have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in
Biology or Agricultural Sciences, with specilisation in Plant Breeding, Plant
Pathology and/or Genetics. Some experience in the application of molecular
markers will be an asset.
The researcher will participate in the Graduate School Plant Sciences, which
offers many facilities for training and education.
The research should result in several scientific papers (that also serve as
chapters of a PhD thesis), and in graduation to PhD degree in Agricultural and
Environmental Sciences.

The reserach project:

Since 1973 extensive research at the Department of Plant Breeding has
accumulated knowledge on the partial resistance of barley (Hordeum vulgare) to
the barley leaf rust fungus Puccinia hordei. This resistance is based on a
non-hypersensitive, pre-haustorial mechanism of defence. There is evidence
that the genes for partial resistance to Puccinia hordei play a role in the
general defence mechanism (non-host resistance) of barley to unadapted
microbial organisms. The barley - P. hordei relationship serves as a model
system for many other plant-pathosystems, where similar forms of resistance
exist.
Six quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for partial resistance have been identified
and mapped on the barley high-density AFLP map by using 103 recombinant inbred
lines (RILs) obtained from a cross between the susceptible parent `L94' and
the partially resistant parent `Vada'. A series of nearly isogenic lines
(NILs) for each of the identified QTLs (NIL-QTLs) in an L94 background is
being generated through several backcrosses to L94 followed by AFLP marker
assisted selection. The development of these NIL-QTLs will be continued and
completed in the present project.
The NIL-QTLs will be instumental in the evaluation of the isolate specificity
of each QTL. This will give insight in the possible existence of a "minor gene
for minor gene" interaction operating in pathosystems, where partial
resistance is involved. Also the role of these QTLs in the non-host resistance
of barley to inappropriate rust fungi will be tested.
This detailed characterization of rust-isolate- and rust species-specificity
is of great importance for understanding the principle of basic-compatibility
between plants and their biotrophic specialised pathogens.
The generated NIL-QTLs will also be used to critically study the effect of
each QTL on the histological components of the development of the rust fungus,
the components of resistance, and the plant developmental stage in which these
QTLs are expressed.
The project also aims at fine-scale mapping of the QTL with the largest
effect, Rphq4. Sets of NIL-QTL(s) will be crossed with `L94', and large F2
populations (about 2500 plants each) will be screened with flanking
co-dominant molecular markers. Recombinants will be identified and
subsequently those plants and/or their F3 progenies will be evaluated for
partial resistance. A large number of new AFLP primer combinations will be
employed for fine-scale mapping the QTL with an accuracy of about 0.05 cM.
This will open the way to isolation of the first gene for pre-haustorial
resistance against rust fungi.

Deadline for application: October 13th
