Study of Environmental Mixtures Using Alternative Species
James G. Burkhart, PhD

One postdoctoral position is available at NIH/NIEHS in the Laboratory of Toxicology, Alternative Systems Group. Studies involve interactions and biological significance of complex mixtures that are toxic to natural aquatic species. The objective is to identify mechanisms and factors that may potentiate the adverse effects of some environmental exposures and determine the relevance to other species and/or humans. The project is complex and will require a variety of analytical methodologies (molecular biology, biochemistry) as well as a combination of in vivo (amphibians and teleosts) and in vitro model systems. This position is open to citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. having a Ph.D. or M.D. degree and less than five years of postdoctoral experience. Laboratory of Toxicology, NIEHS, P.O. Box 12233 (C1-08), Research Triangle Park, NC 27709. Email: burkhart@niehs.nih.gov, Voice: (919) 541-3280.

US--Postdoc in yeast cell cycle checkpoint regulation
Posted to MedZilla 6/13/2000
Respond to Job code: MZ-wj5808
US--Postdoc in yeast cell cycle checkpoint regulation
A fully funded position is available, to start in summer/fall of '00,
to investigate mechanisms of cell cycle arrest mediated by the DNA
damage and spindle assembly checkpoints in S. cerevisiae.

Our laboratory is in the Center for Molecular Oncology at the
University of Chicago. Our group is focused on dissecting the multiple
functions of the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdc28 in regulating yeast
cell growth. We use genetic screens, cell biological assays and
biochemical techniques to identify how checkpoint signaling pathways
regulate Cdc28 and to discover Cdc28 targets involved in cell cycle
arrest.

Experience in yeast molecular genetics is desirable, but candidates
with a strong record of accomplishment as a student or post-doc in any
area of cell or molecular biology are appropriate. Salary determined
by the NIH NRSA scale, based on years experience.

Institute of Plant Nutrition, Hohenheim University, 70593 Stuttgart,

Research Area: Effect of microelement and P supply in soil on uptake and
translocation of microelements in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants

Position:
Graduate student position, starting September 1, 2000, for initially 2
years

Project description:
In this project, novel molecular and physiological methodology will be
used to contribute to an understanding of regulating mechanisms
responsible for the observed effects of AM mycorrhizal colonisation on
plant microelement, i.e. plant micronutrient (Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe) or heavy
metal (Cd, Ni, Al, Pb) acquisition.

Regulating mechanisms could occur at any one of the stages in
microelement acquisition by the plant. These stages are: mobilisation
from the soil, absorption from the soil to the fungus, translocation
through the fungal mycelium, transfer across the fungus/plant interface,
root to shoot transport and partitioning.

Therefore, more specifically, it is the main aim of the project to
determine the role of the following processes in the regulation of
microelement uptake:

(a) Mobilisation of elements by hyphal exudates (Mobilisation)
(b) Microelement concentration in the hyphosphere (Absorption)
(c) Simultaneous uptake/transport of N, P (or S) (Absorption,
Translocation)
(d) Plant or fungus demand for the element (Translocation)
(e) Shoot demand for the element (Shoot: root transport)

It is expected that a combination of new molecular tools (with
co-operation partners), novel micro-analytical techniques (with
co-operation partners) and whole plant physiological and element uptake
studies (expertise of our own laboratory) will contribute significantly
to the understanding of the function of the mycorrhizal symbiosis.

US-TX-POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW TO STUDY INTRACELLULAR MESSENGERS AND
STRUCTURAL DETERMINANTES FOR THE REGULATION OF THE KIDNEY NA-PUMP

A post-doctoral fellow position to study the regulation of the Na-pump
(Na,K-ATPase) in kidney is open. We use biochemical and molecular
techniques to study the intracellular messengers that are involved in
the hormonal regulation of the Na-pump. At the same time, we also
study which amino acids of the Na-pump subunits are essential or
participate in the regulatory process. We prefer an independent person
who wants to learn about this problem and contributes not only with
his/her work but also with ideas. A friendly environment at the
University of Houston, College of Pharmacy is offered. The position is
supported by an NIH Grant.
