POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN AXON GUIDANCE

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to join an
interdisciplinary team investigating mechanisms of axonal gradient
detection in the developing nervous system. We are looking for someone
with experience in cell/tissue culture and the in vitro analysis of
axon guidance. We are developing a new tool for determining the
response of axons to precisely controlled molecular gradients which we
expect will have wide applicability.

The position of a post-doctoral scientist (BATIIa) is available in a
project supported by the German Human Genome Project, analysing the
gene expression patterns of several thousand genes in the 9.5 dpc mouse
embryo. The data provide functional links between new genes, identified
by genomics research, and embryonic pattern formation and
organogenesis. Complete sequences and mapping of selected genes provide
novel candidate drug targets, and candidates for human disorders and
known mouse mutations. Applicants should be familiar with in situ
hybridization techniques and mid-gestation mouse or other vertebrate
embryos. The successful candidate is working in a group of 3
scientists, 1 data base manager and 4 technical assistants.

A postdoctoral fellowship position is available for a scientist
interested in non-mendelian inheritance in mouse. We have isolated a
major player involved in this phenomenon (Herrmann et al., Nature 402,
141-146, 1999). This gene, called the t complex responder, allows the
manipulation of transmission ratio from the male. Biochemical and
molecular genetic analyses as well as animal breeding experiments will
be performed to analyse the functional properties of the responder and
identify the gene products interacting with it in spermatozoa.

A postoctoral fellowship position is open for a biologist/embryologist
interested in the molecular analysis of somitogenesis. We have isolated
more than twenty new genes involved in somitogenesis in the mouse
embryo by a gene expression screening approach. A large number of genes
playing an important role in somite development will be isolated in the
course of another project within the next 1-2 years. This provides a
rich source of genetic material for a motivated and keen scientist
interested in this research topic.

JOb posting #300363 at Post-doctoral website:

       http://www.Post-Docs.com

----------------------------------------------

Persistent DNA damage frequently induces an
arrest of the replication fork. To enable the
termination of replication and cellular survival
the cell possesses specialized DNA
polymerases, capable of replicating a
damaged DNA template. These so-called
translesion synthesis (TLS) polymerases are
sloppy, frequently resulting in the introduction
of a mutation. To study the role of individual
TLS polymerases in determining cellular
resistance against DNA-damaging agents
and in mutagenesis we have cloned the
genes encoding two TLS polymerases, Rev3
and Rev1 and are currently generating cell
lines and mice, deficient for each gene. The
project, financed for three years by the
Association for International Cancer Research
(AICR) aims at analysing TLS in extracts of
these cell lines and mouse embryos. To get a
better insight in the cellular components
involved in TLS we will in a parallel approach
identify proteins that interact with Rev1 and
Rev3. This will be done using yeast two-hybrid
screens and by purifying macromolecular
complexes containing Rev1 and Rev3,
followed by the identification of copurifying
proteins.
For the work we are looking for a, recently
graduated, protein biochemist (Ph.D.) with an
interest in DNA replication, repair and
mutagenesis.

DOCTORATE AND POSTDOCTORATE POSITIONS IN BIOLOGICALLY
ORIENTED INFORMATION PROCESSING

************** please excuse multiple postings *******************

New doctorate and Postdoc research positions are open immediately at
the German National Research Center for Information Technology (GMD,
http://www.gmd.de/) in the Institute for Autonomous Intelligent
Systems (AiS, http://ais.gmd.de/).

In the interdisciplinary arena of neural information processing,
robotics, cognitive science and neurobiology, AiS will intensify its
research on biologically inspired neural information processing
systems. Research will focus on the aspects of stochasticity,
parallelism, asynchrony, self-organization and high-bandwidth
communication between subsystems. The methodological focus within AiS is

on mathematical modeling and robot implementations. The biological
side is substantiated by collaborations with leading neuroscience and
ethological research institutions.

Within this wide field, we solicit applications of young researchers
who combine a broad scientific curiosity with the desire and the
training to achieve "hard" results (mathematical models, algorithms,
robot implementations). The candidate should have an education in
computational neuroscience, (neuro-)biology, mathematics, control
engineering, computer science, physics, cognitive science or related
areas. A characteristic of both PhD and postdoc positions at GMD is
intellectual freedom. The positions are not connected to pre-defined
projects but admit (indeed, require) that candidates define their own
research objectives within the general research framework of AiS.

For the PhD positions we expect a university degree (master, diploma).
Payment will be in agreement with German BAT 2a salary (corresponding
to university research assistants) in a part-time (19 hrs/week)
contract. The position will be granted initially for one year, with a
possible extension for two further years on mutual agreement.

For the postdoc positions, we expect a PhD and a significant research
record. Contracts will be full-time BAT 2a (equivalent to university
research assistants) for 2 years initially with a possible extension
of one further year.

GMD is an equal opportunity employer.

Full applications should comprise a CV, copies of university degrees
(including marks), letters of reference, a publication list, and -
importantly - a research plan. We encourage sending a preliminary
application by email, consisting of a CV, a publication list, and a
statement of research interests.

Please direct applications and inquiries to

Biologist, Genomes Curator

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has an opening
for a biologist, with a background in molecular and cellular biology or
genetics, as well as an interest in bioinformatics, to curate genome
reference sequences.

The Genomes division of Entrez
< http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:80/entrez/query.fcgi?db=Genome > contains
complete genome sequences for over 800 organisms, including bacteria,
archaea, viruses, organelles, plasmids, and a growing number of
eukaryotes. For each complete genome, the NCBI produces a reference
sequence and associated analysis tools.

We seek a candidate to help curate complete genomes reference sequences and
develop web-based resources using NCBI's sequence analysis software tools.
This position provides an excellent opportunity to use state-of-the-art
computer systems and gain experience using bioinformatics tools developed
by leading computational biologists.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in molecular, cellular, or developmental
biology or genetics, experience in using sequence analysis tools such as
BLAST, proficiency at writing HTML, and a good command of English. Programming
experience (C, C++, Perl, UNIX operaiting system) is a plus.

The NCBI is part of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), and is based at
the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland.

Please mail, fax, or e-mail your resume and a cover letter to
