Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology
Andres Buonnano, PhD

Are you interested in how the properties of muscles are modified during development and with exercise, and its relevance to disease? In the Section on Molecular Neurobiology we have begun to isolate novel transcription factors that regulate the developmental and activity-dependent expression of muscle genes. One of these factors may be implicated in human myopathies. Multidisciplinary approaches, including gene knock-out and transgenic mice, monitoring gene expression in vivo using GFP reporter constructs in electrically stimulated muscles, yeast-1 and –2 hybrid screens, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization will be used in these studies. Candidates need a background in molecular biology or biochemistry, a Ph.D. or M.D., and less than 5 years of postdoctoral training. Section on Molecular Neurobiology, Building 49/Room 5A-38, NIH, Bethesda, MD 20892. E-mail: buonanno@helix.nih.gov//www.nih.nichd.gov (Fax) 301-496-9939.

Postdoctoral Position Available
Molecular Cardiology Research Institute
Tufts University School of Medicine-NEMC
Boston, MA

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the field
of molecular signaling and peptide-protein recognition. The project
focuses on the PAR1 human thrombin receptor. Thrombin cleavage of the
thrombin receptors activates an extraordinarily diverse array of physiologic
responses. These include platelet aggregation, cellular
proliferation/apoptosis, cell-cell adhesion and inflammation, and
potentially the invasive and tissue-reorganizing processes involved in
cancer.

Molecular Strategies for Modulation of Thrombin-PAR Interactions.
During coagulation, the physiologic concentration of thrombin exceeds that
of its thrombin receptor substrate. Thrombin has the difficult task of
discriminating among the various cell surface proteins to find the receptor

and cleave it in the millisecond time range. This project focuses on how high
and low affinity thrombin receptors are activated on the surface of cells using
biochemical, genetic, and structural approaches.

Our laboratory is located within the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute, a
modern, state-of-the-art facility supported by several core units including
automated DNA sequencing, oligonucleotide and peptide synthesis, plasmid
preparation, small animal surgical and physiology lab, flow cytometry, and
transgenic mouse facility. Qualifications for this position are a Ph.D.
degree;
experience in mammalian cell transfection and expression is preferred.
Interested candidates should e-mail a description of their research
interests, a
CV, and names of three references to:

Genetic Regulatory Controls in Neural Cells
Lynn Hudson, PhD

The Laboratory of Developmental Neurogenetics focusses on the cues for commitment of progenitor cells in the vertebrate nervous system: specifically, what positional information activates the set of genes required for gliogenesis? We employ microarray analyses to identify transcription factors, cell interaction molecules and signal transduction proteins implicated in discrete stages of the oligodendroglial lineage. Along with a microarray approach, we combine transgenic mouse models together with in vivo interaction systems and in vitro molecular biology techniques to define how a network of genes functions to bring about the specification and differentiation of neural cells. Additional information is available at our web site: http://intra.ninds.nih.gov/ldn/index.html.
Expertise in molecular biology and/or anatomical techniques is desirable, as is an interest in genetics and/or neuroscience. Applicants with a Ph.D or M.D. degree should submit their curriculum vitae/bibliography. DNA Replication and Cell Cycle Control
Mirit I. Aladjem, PhD

A postdoctoral position is available to study the regulation
of DNA replication origins in mammalian cells. The aim of the
research program is understanding how information from the cell cycle
machinery leads to the initiation of DNA replication. The proposed
project is based on the observation that in some mammalian loci,
initiation sites are determined by interaction between local
sequences at the origin of replication and distant regulatory
sequences. A recently developed intrachromosomal initiation assay,
combining biochemical analysis with recombinase-mediated gene
targeting will be used to evaluate the local and distant requirements
for initiation. We will then be able to determine the cell cycle
regulatory pathways that interact with these sequences in normal and
malignant cells. For more details and reference please refer to the
Web site: http://www.nci.nih.gov/intra/lmp/MABIO.HTM Laboratory of Molecular Pharmacology, DBS/NCI/NIH, Building 37, Room 5D09, 37 Convent Drive, Bethesda, MD 20892-4255.

MICROBIOLOGIST

Dept. of Biology, University of Central Arkansas, Conway, AR 72035

A tenure–track position is available at the Assistant Professor level
for a Microbiologist. Preference will be given to candidates with
interests in immunology or virology. A Ph.D. is required.

The Department of Biology contains 22 full-time faculty, all with
doctorates. The department serves about 400 undergraduate majors in
three major areas of interest: ecology/evolutionary biology,
preprofessional studies, and general biology. In addition, the
department takes a lead role in our new Environmental Science Program,
where most students pursue the biology track. About 20 students are
currently enrolled in the department's MS program. About 1,500 students
per year take our Biology for General Education course (with lab), and
we offer several large service courses for health science majors.

The biology faculty are dedicated to quality teaching. The candidate's
primary teaching responsibilities will be in microbiology. Additional
responsibilities may include an upper division elective or graduate
course, and contribution to the lower-division curriculum. New faculty
have a somewhat reduced teaching load, and eventually carry a 12 contact
hour/week load. Teaching load can be reduced through reassigned time
and sabbatical programs. Most of the faculty are actively engaged in
research, and the candidate is expected to develop an active research
program. Funding sources of current faculty have included NSF, NIH,
American Heart Association, National Park Service, USDA, EPA, and
various state and local agencies.

The Department of Biology occupies about 50,000 sq-ft in Lewis Science
Center. Most rooms have optical fiber access to campus resources and
the internet. We maintain an extensive equipment inventory. Multiple
computer stations are employed in cell biology, physiology, molecular
biology, and the freshman Biology-I course, and are available for other
courses. We are currently adding a Scanning Electron Microscope
facility, and have other NSF equipment proposals pending. Additional
teaching and research resources include five large growth chambers, two
large greenhouses, and several outdoor experimental and natural areas.

Our department strives to maintain the kind of rich collegial
environment where faculty and students feel comfortable and welcome to
explore the various subdisciplines of modern biology. Collaboration and
cooperation are the rule, and a supportive departmental atmosphere is
the result.

Conway is a prosperous city of 45,000 with two private colleges in
addition to The University of Central Arkansas. Living here means easy
access to both a large urban center (Little Rock is 30 minutes away via
I-40) and pristine wild areas such as the Buffalo National River, and
the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains. The area affords opportunities for
canoeing, fishing, and hunting, and is also rich in art, handicraft, and
folk culture.

To apply, submit curriculum vita, statements of teaching philosophy and
research plans, and the names of three references to: Dr. Paul Hamilton,
Department Chairperson, at the address above. Application review will
begin December 6, 2000 and continue until the position is filled. For
further information visit
<http://www.uca.edu/divisions/academic/biology/>. The University of
Central Arkansas is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
Minorities and women are especially encouraged to apply.

ECOLOGIST

Dept. of Biology, University of Central Arkansas, Conway, AR 72035

A tenure–track position is available at the Assistant Professor level
for an Ecologist. Preference will be given to community ecologists with
strong quantitative backgrounds. A Ph.D. is required.

The candidate's
teaching responsibilities will include General Ecology, Biometry,
contribution to the lower-division curriculum, and an upper division
elective or graduate course in the candidate's area of specialty. New
faculty have a somewhat reduced teaching load, and eventually carry a 12
contact hour/week load. Teaching load can be reduced through reassigned
time and sabbatical programs. Most of the faculty are actively engaged
in research, and the candidate is expected to develop an active research

Multiple
computer stations are employed in cell biology, physiology, molecular
biology, and the freshman Biology-I course, and are available for
ecology and biometry courses. We are currently adding a Scanning
Electron Microscope facility, and have other NSF equipment proposals
pending. Additional teaching and research resources include five large
growth chambers, two large greenhouses, and several outdoor experimental
and natural areas.

Embryonic Post-Transcriptional Gene Regulation
Susan Mackem, MD, PhD

Postdoctoral position available to analyze mechanisms of
post-transcriptional regulation during gastrulation in chick embryos using molecular-genetic and biochemical approaches. We have characterized two related homeobox genes that are expressed in the chick organizer during gastrulation. The expression of these genes is regulated both at the level of nuclear-to-cytoplasmic message transport and RNA stability and can be modulated over a more than 100-fold range. Differential splicing of an intron within the 3''UTR may be involved in this regulation. Applicants should be less than five years post-graduate degree and have a strong background in molecular biology and nucleic acid biochemistry. Applications and requests for additional information should be sent to smack@helix.nih.gov. Laboratory of Pathology, DCS/NCI, Building 10, Room 2A33, 10 Center Drive MSC 1500, Bethesda, MD, 20892-1500.

My group has a postdoc opening in computational
biophysics. We are tackling a series of prominent challenges
in protein science in the post-genomic era. By combining
genomic informatics and physical approaches such as
molecular modeling, we are working on predicting
protein structures and protein-protein interaction sites
and on elucidating the nature of folding nucleus.

Are Retinoids Embryonic Morphogens?
Susan Mackem, MD, PhD

Retinoids play critical roles in multiple developmental processes
including early events such as establishment of left-right asymmetry during gastrulation and determination of axial sites of limb budding, as well as later events such as regional differentiation of the central nervous system, morphogenesis of the vertebral column, and the differentiation of various epithelia. However, it is still unclear whether any of these processes are mediated by graded distributions of retinoids (localized sources of high RA) or simply by differential tissue sensitivities to relatively uniform tissue retinoid levels. My lab has developed a novel, highly sensitive, real-time reporter assay for retinoids in living embryos. Molecular-genetic approaches are being used in both chick embryos
(adenoviral vectors, in ovo electroporation) and mouse embryos (inducible transgenic, knock-in) to look at dynamic retinoid distribution during embryogenesis. Applicants should have less than five years prior postdoctoral experience and a strong background in molecular and/or developmental biology. Applications and requests for additional information should be sent to smack@helix.nih.gov. Laboratory of Pathology, DCS/NCI, Building 10, Room 2A33, 10 Center Drive, MSC 1500, Bethesda, MD, 20892-1500.

Development of Vertebrate Limb Skeleton
Susan Mackem, MD, PhD

Postdoctoral position available to study the regulation of skeletal
development in the limb. My lab is interested in both early and late
phases of limb development including the initiation of limb budding,
patterning, determination of limb-type identity, and differentiation of skeletal components. Emphasis is on transcriptional regulators involved in these processes and the analysis of their function using molecular-genetic approaches in both chick and mouse embryos, as well as the identification of their downstream target genes using methods such as differential display and micro-array analysis. Applicants should have less than five years prior postdoctoral experience and a strong background in molecular and/or developmental biology. Applications and requests for additional information should be sent to smack@helix.nih.gov. Laboratory of Pathology, DCS/NCI, Building 10, Room 2A33, 10 Center Drive MSC 1500, Bethesda, MD, 20892-1500.

Molecular Mechanism of Hematopoietic Cell Growth and Differentiation
Keiko Ozato, PhD

This laboratory studies the mechanisms that control the growth and differentiation of hematopoietic cells. We focus on two transcription factors, ICSBP(IRF-8)1 and MCAP2 : ICSBP(IRF-8) is expressed only in hematopoietic cells and regulates cytokine/interferon mediated transcription. Whereas, MCAP is a chromatin-associated protein and regulates cell division and gene expression broadly. A postdoctoral position which offers up to five years of research opportunity is available from January 2001. This position is intended to investigate the function and the mechanism of the action of these factors. Candidates should have a Ph.D or M.D, received within the past 5 years (or expected in a year). Experiences in cell biology and/or protein chemistry, and the knowledge on cell cycle regulation are appreciated. Laboratory of Molecular Growth Regulation, NICHD, Building 6, Room 2A01, 6 Center Drive MSC 2753, Bethesda MD 20892-2753. Voice: (301) 496-9184. Fax: (301) 480 9354. E-mai!

POST DOCTORAL POSITION
in Canberra, Australia with Andrew Torda.

Each year, the Research School of Chemistry at the
Australian National University has a series of post-doctoral
fellowships awarded on a competitive basis. Applications for
the current round will be taken until about Oct 31 2000.
Starting dates are negotiable.

There are positions in several groups. This ad describes my
group.

The research group of Andrew Torda is oriented towards
biomolecular calculation and simulation. We are working in
areas such as low-resolution (protein fold recognition) force
fields and mixing knowledge-based force fields and
experimental data. Most recent work has moved towards the
border of the high fashion area, bioinformatics and the nice
reliable area of force fields. We are a Boltzmann-free zone
(our force fields are much more entertaining).
Have a look at
     http://www.rsc.anu.edu.au/~torda
If you follow the link to publications, it will give you an
idea of recent work. There is also a link to an HTML version
of this text.

All the projects in the group involve coding - not just
applications. It would be an advantage to have a reasonable
knowledge of data structures and algorithms and programming
experience in a civilized language (not fortran).
Some knowledge of graph theory would not be a disadvantage.

Salary: A$39,316 - A$47,444 per annum. Grants are provided
towards travel and removal. Positions are initially for two
years with a likely extension to a third year.

The Research School of Chemistry is part of the Institute of
Advanced Studies which runs special research schools, in
parallel to the normal teaching schools, and without any
undergraduate teaching duties. The university is in the centre
of Canberra (the nation's capital).

Given the research orientation of the school, there is a
lively academic environment. We have close contacts with the
school's other theoretical groups in statistical mechanics,
quantum chemistry and chemical physics. From the point of view
of experimental groups, we maintain close ties to the school's
NMR, X-ray crystallography and molecular biology groups.

A final application must reach the school office by slow mail,
but initially, contact me directly.
The formal advertisement is at

DBA position at the European Bioinformatics Institute

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), part of the European Molecular
Biology Laboratory (EMBL), acts both as a service and research institute in
the field of Bioinformatics. It was established at Hinxton near Cambridge UK
next to Europe's largest genome sequencing centre. In collaboration with
groups in Europe, the USA and Japan, the EBI maintains many biological
databases, including comprehensive public databases of DNA and protein
sequences and their 3D structures.

We are seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) for the support of the production
databases at the EBI. The task also includes recommending and implementing
improvements, especially in the design phase of new projects. Candidates should
have a university degree or comparable qualification and experience of
supporting production databases and logical as well as physical design of
databases. Sound knowledge of Oracle 8 and related products and familiarity with
Client/Server architecture in a UNIX environment is required. An interest in
molecular biology is desirable.

More information about the EBI's activities and services is available at
http://www.ebi.ac.uk.
