--------------------------------------------------------------
Two postdoctoral positions are available in the general area of
microbial detection. One project will use hybridization array
technology to study the effect of microgravity and other factors on
gene expression. Work will initially be done in E. coli, but pending
initial results may later be expanded to other bacteria. The individual
will also be involved in designing and testing hybridization arrays for
bacterial detection. Aspects of the work will be done in collaboration
with investigators in our Chemical Engineering Department and at NASA's
Johnson Space Center. The second position will be for an individual
interested in further development of our unique monitoring system that
we believe will greatly facilitate quantitative studies in microbial
ecology (Curr. Microbiol. 40: 91-95, 2000 and references therein. This
project would benefit from skills in microbial ecology, molecular
biology and array hybridization. Both positions will pay very
competitive salaries with fringe benefits. Interested applicants should
send a current cv to Dr. Fox. THe University of Houston is an Equal
Opportunity Employer.

Sr. Scientist/Biostatistician

(Company is a biopharmaceutical company located on the East Coast)

Job Description

As Sr. Scientist/Biostatistician you will lead efforts to develop better
methods and tools to extract, manipulate and analyze the large amounts of
data. You will work with developers from our Informatics and Information
Sciences Departments to develop tactical tools to assemble and validate
clone aliquots that represent specific genes using internal and external
databases. You will also help specify Laboratory Information Management
Systems (LIMS) software to track sample movement and quality that is
critical to proper data analysis by our scientists/customers. You will work
with scientists to develop the best methods to present these results and use
them to make key decisions on gene validation and follow-up experiments. You
will also assist the team of process development scientists, engineers and
associates in the analysis of their trial data. You will be a mentor and
coach to many in the TRACE and Technology Development Groups in the
techniques of manipulating and analyzing data. You will be a strong
collaborator with all the software and data analysis groups at Millennium.
You will also collaborate with outside companies and vendors and you will
specify appropriate software tools for large-scale data analysis.

Job Requirements

A PhD in Statistics or Science with an emphasis on mathematical and software
techniques is required. Qualified candidates will have a broad skill set
including training in statistics, software engineering and database
applications and scientific training in fields where large data sets with
variable quality and confidence levels are expected. Successful candidates
must have a portfolio of data analysis and software systems that they have
developed in previous assignments. These systems will have addressed
difficult requirements in a high throughput or highly precise biotechnology
application. At least 7 years industry experience required. Experience in
Genomics and/or Drug Discovery Projects is highly desirable.

A postdoctoral position is available to study the structures and dynamics of
the enzymes in the shikimate and folate biosynthetic pathways. Since the
shikimate and folate biosynthetic pathways are unique to microbial and plant
worlds, the two pathways are ideal targets for development of antimicrobial
agents and herbicides. The long-term goals of the projects are to elucidate
the structure-function relationships of these proteins that account for
their catalytic mechanisms and to design specific inhibitors that may become
new antimicrobial agents. A variety of techniques is employed in these
projects, including recombinant DNA, biochemical, and biophysical methods.
The main structural technique is multidimensional NMR spectroscopy. These
projects are of great biomedical significance, especially in light of
rapidly increasing antibiotic resistance in recent years that has rendered
the current antibiotics ineffective for treating many microbial infections
and caused a worldwide health care crisis.

Our laboratory is well equipped for protein NMR spectroscopy.
Instrumentation includes three computer workstations (one from SGI and two
from Sun) and 500 MHz and 600 MHz Varian NMR spectrometers. The 600 MHz
Varian Inova NMR spectrometer is equipped with four rf channels and tri-axis
pulsed field gradients and is dedicated to biomolecular NMR studies. Funds
have been approved for acquiring a 900 MHz state-of-the-art NMR
spectrometer.

The initial appointment for the position will be two years and is renewable
upon mutual agreement. The applicants should have experience with
multidimensional NMR spectroscopy. If interested, please send a CV along
with telephone numbers and email addresses of three references to the
address below. Email responses are encouraged.

Postdoctoral Position Available:

Molecular Cardiology Research Institute
Tufts University School of Medicine-NEMC
Boston, MA

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the field of
molecular signaling and peptide-protein recognition. Cleavage of the
Protease-Activated Receptors activates an extraordinarily diverse array of
physiologic responses. These include platelet aggregation, cellular
proliferation/apoptosis, cell-cell adhesion and inflammation, and
potentially the invasive and tissue-reorganizing processes involved in
cancer.

This project focuses on how high and low affinity thrombin receptors are
activated on the surface of cells using biochemical, genetic, and
structural approaches. Macromolecular interactions with other regulatory
proteins and the relationship of PAR activation with engagement of
integrins will also be explored.

Our laboratory is located within the Molecular Cardiology Research
Institute, a modern, state-of-the-art facility supported by several core
units including automated DNA sequencing, oligonucleotide and peptide
synthesis, plasmid preparation, small animal surgical and physiology lab,
flow cytometry, and transgenic mouse facility. Qualifications for this
position are a Ph.D. degree; experience in mammalian cell transfection and
expression is preferred. Interested candidates should e-mail a description
of their research interests, a CV, and names of three references to:

Two Ph.D. positions in Evolutionary Biology

Department of Evolutionary Biology
University of Muenster, Germany

We invite applications for two PhD projects on the following topics:

1. Importance of parasites for the evolution of sex in the freshwater=20
planarian Schmidtea polychroa. This species consists of obligate sexual and=
=20
asexual "biotypes" that coexist in certain locations. Asexuals are=20
hermaphroditic, sperm-dependent parthenogens that can mate with sexual=20
(hermaphroditic & outcrossing) conspecifics. Highly polymorphic=20
microsatellites and mtDNA markers have been established. Previous work=20
showed that protozoan parasites infect asexuals more often than sexuals. In=
=20
the current project, this result will be studied in more detail by (1)=20
regular field sampling in N-Italy, (2) histological and molecular=20
characterisation of parasites, (3) analysis of the effect of parasite=20
infections on host genotype fitness, (4) molecular and statistical analysis=
=20
of host-parasite dynamics.

2. The interaction between parasitism and host population characteristics=20
in the hermaphroditic earthworm Lumbricus terrestris. This species is=20
characterised by the presence of a very common sporozoan parasite in its=20
sperm vesicles, which may occasionally be transmitted to the mating partner=
=20
during insemination. Mobility and reproductive rate are very low in L.t.=20
This project consists of the following parts (1) development of molecular=20
markers for host and parasite, (2) repeated sampling in different types of=
=20
environments throughout the study period, (3) molecular and statistical=20
analysis. This project is new for our research group.

Both positions are funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft -=20
German Research Council) for a two-year period. The positions are at the=20
German BAT II =BD level (ca. 2100 DM per month after taxation) and include=
=20
social benefits. Both positions can be extended by another year, depending=
=20
on the outcome of a renewal application in 2002. Fluency in English is=20
required. Knowledge of German is not an a priori requirement.

Required skills for both positions: (1) proven education and genuine=20
interest in evolutionary biology, including population genetics, (2)=20
familiarity with methods and concepts behind DNA marker techniques, (3) an=
=20

</u><font face=3D"Arial, Helvetica" size=3D4><b>Two Ph.D. positions in
Evolutionary Biology<br>
<br>
Department of Evolutionary Biology<br>
University of Muenster, Germany<br>
<br>
</b></font><font face=3D"Arial, Helvetica">We invite applications for two
PhD projects on the following topics:<br>
<br>
1. Importance of parasites for the evolution of sex in the freshwater
planarian <i>Schmidtea polychroa</i>. This species consists of obligate
sexual and asexual &quot;biotypes&quot; that coexist in certain
locations. Asexuals are hermaphroditic, sperm-dependent parthenogens that
can mate with sexual (hermaphroditic &amp; outcrossing) conspecifics.
Highly polymorphic microsatellites and mtDNA markers have been
established. Previous work showed that protozoan parasites infect
asexuals more often than sexuals. In the current project, this result
will be studied in more detail by (1) regular field sampling in N-Italy,
(2) histological and molecular characterisation of parasites, (3)
analysis of the effect of parasite infections on host genotype fitness,
(4) molecular and statistical analysis of host-parasite dynamics.<br>
<br>
2. The interaction between parasitism and host population characteristics
in the hermaphroditic earthworm <i>Lumbricus terrestris</i>. This species
is characterised by the presence of a very common sporozoan parasite in
its sperm vesicles, which may occasionally be transmitted to the mating
partner during insemination. Mobility and reproductive rate are very low
in L.t. This project consists of the following parts (1) development of
molecular markers for host and parasite, (2) repeated sampling in
different types of environments throughout the study period, (3)
molecular and statistical analysis. This project is new for our research
group.<br>
<br>
Both positions are funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft -
German Research Council) for a two-year period. The positions are at the
German BAT II =BD level (ca. 2100 DM per month after taxation) and include
social benefits. Both positions can be extended by another year,
depending on the outcome of a renewal application in 2002. Fluency in
English is required. Knowledge of German is not an a priori
requirement.<br>
<br>
<u>Required skills for both positions</u>: (1) proven education and
genuine interest in evolutionary biology, including population genetics,
(2) familiarity with methods and concepts behind DNA marker techniques,
(3) an acute sense for proper laboratory maintenance as well as social,
organisational and practical skills. Additional abilities such as
computer programming or fluency in several languages are an asset.
Qualified female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.<br>

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW and VISITING SCHOLAR (Molecular Biology / Microbial
Genetics) POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Postdoctoral fellow and Visiting Scholar positions are immediately
available in
a molecular microbiology laboratory for molecular and functional
characterization of novel fungal P450s for xenobiotic metabolism. In our
recent
work, two novel cytochrome P450 monooxygenase genes and the P450 reductase
gene
have been cloned and sequenced and their cDNAs isolated from a
xenobiotic-detoxifying fungus. The studies will include characterization of
full-length splice variant cDNAs; xenobiotic induction and regulation of gene
expression under varied physiological conditions based on mRNA and enzyme
levels; functional characterization involving gene disruption and heterologous
gene expression in yeast or baculovirus system for in vivo and in vitro
catalytic studies using recombinant enzymes or gene knock-out strains.

Osteoporosis Genetics Research / FELLOW or INSTRUCTOR position available
(Ph.D. or M.D., US Citizens only!). We have a postdoctoral fellowship
available immediately as a career-track position in the Veterans
Administration, and a postdoctoral or Instructor-level position at the
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Our research goal is to
identify genes underlying natural variation in bone density, in mice and
humans. We have identified a number of loci strongly affecting mature
bone density in the mouse (see Benes et al., J. Bone Min. Res.15:
626-633, 2000), and several more influencing only post-maturity changes
in bone density. We are pursuing these in mice by repeatedly
partitioning the implicated genomic intervals, selecting recombinants
between flanking markers and assessing their phenotypes. We also have
collaborative access to three human populations and wish to test these
for linkage and association to bone density at loci corresponding to the
murine regions identified. Other related areas of interest, to which
the fellow could also contribute, include mapping of mouse loci
affecting T-cell lymphoma and other traits bearing on retroviral
involvement in these cancers. We need a fellow to begin work as soon as
possible, who enjoys intellectual stimulation and interacts well with
others. The work and living environments are pleasant, and the salary
is very competitive. Experience in genetics research would be helpful,
but is not essential since on-job training is available. Please send or
email a letter of application along with your CV and names/contact
information for 3 references, to:

Established in 1981, Computercraft Corporation is a team-oriented biotech
consultant, with a significant long-term presence at the NIH/National Center
for Biotechnology Information, in Bethesda, MD. We are currently searching
for an experienced Ph.D. biologist or molecular biologist to participate in
the Conserved Domain Database project. While not a laboratory position,
extensive molecular biology lab experience is needed. Prefer experience with
protein sequence and structural analyses, and familiarity with UNIX and
Windows operating systems. Experience in molecular evolution and
phylogenetic analysis is highly desirable. Knowledge of bioinformatics and
the theoretical issues involved in sequence alignment and analysis is also
desirable.

The CDD curator analyzes computationally derived multiple alignments of
protein family members and refines the alignments by comparing the sequence
alignment with 3D structural alignments of family members for which such
data exist. Proteins often contain several modules or domains, each with a
distinct evolutionary origin and function. The Conserved Domain Database
project compiles sequences containing such domains into families, using
multiple local sequence alignments. The CD-Search service may then be used
to identify the conserved domains present in a protein sequence. We are
currently in the process of producing a curated set of CDs where
3D-structure information is used explicitly to define domain boundaries,
aligned blocks, and amend alignment details. For further information, please
see: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Structure/cdd/cdd.shtml

Requirements of this position include the analysis of amino acid sequence
alignments and 3D-structure, review of relevant literature, and annotation
of protein sequence families using specialized sequence analysis software
tools. Involves strong research component.

Qualified candidates are invited to submit: cover letter, Curriculum Vitae,
salary history and requirements, and U.S. employment eligibility, via e-mail
to: hr@computercraft-usa.com, fax: (301) 493-1288, or mail: Computercraft
Corporation, Attn: HR, 6701 Democracy Blvd., Suite 401, Bethesda, MD 20817

A postdoctoral or Research Associate position is available immediately.
Current research focuses on sphingolipids that act as second messengers
to control signal transduction pathways and on discovering new
functions for sphingolipids. Most experiments use the model eucaryote
Saccharomyces cerevisiae because it is amenable to rapid genetic and
biochemical analyses. Ongoing projects are examining: (1) how
sphingolipid long chain bases and long chain base phosphates regulate
cell growth and death, and how the levels of these compounds are
regulated in response to heat and other stresses; (2) how long chain
bases and long chain base phosphates regulate endocytosis and the actin
cytoskeleton; (3) the roles that sphingolipids play in exocytosis and
the secretory pathway leading to transport of lipids and proteins to
cellular compartments; (4) the roles that sphingolipids play in stress
responses including heat and low pH stress. Since there is conservation
of some sphingolipid functions between yeast and mammals, the insight
gained from our studies should advance knowledge of mammalian cellular
functions and disease states including cancers, cardiovascular disease
and neurological disorders.

Candidates for this position should have a Ph. D. in Biochemistry or a
related field and have research experience with lipids, molecular
biology techniques or protein purification.

Postdoctoral Position Available
Hematology-Oncology
Molecular Cardiology Research Institute
Tufts University School of Medicine-NEMC
Boston, MA

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the field of signal
transduction and cancer. The Fellow will examine the role of
thrombin-activated (PAR1, PAR3 and PAR4) and trypsin/tryptase-activated
(PAR2 and PAR4) receptors in the pathogenesis of cancer. Although the role
of proteases in cancer cell invasion and metastasis is intensively studied,
surprisingly little is known about the involvement of the PARs in malignant
processes. The PARs mediate a number of normal physiological functions
which are also necessary for cancer progression such as mitogenesis,
chemotaxis, engagement of integrins and other matrix protein receptors,
angiogenesis, and regulation of apoptosis.

In this project, the Fellow will define the signaling components that are
modulated by PAR activation and inhibition and will utilize mouse tumor
models. Our long term goal is to develop drugs that block invasion and
metastasis formation. We have already developed several novel reagents
that can completely inhibit the movement of highly malignant breast cancer
cells in tissue culture. If we can demonstrate that these prototype
compounds are effective drugs in animal systems, we will strive towards
testing our drugs in patients with invasive disease.

Our laboratory is located within the Division of Hematology-Oncology and
the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute, a modern, state-of-the-art
facility supported by several core units including automated DNA
sequencing, oligonucleotide and peptide synthesis, plasmid preparation,
small animal surgical and physiology lab, flow cytometry, and transgenic
mouse facility.  Qualifications for this position are a Ph.D. degree;
experience in mammalian cell transfection and expression or mouse studies
is preferred. Interested candidates should e-mail a description of their
research interests, a CV, and names of three references to:

Dear Potential Post-Doc,
Research in my laboratory focuses on characterizing regulatory elements
in the islet glucokinase gene with the goal of identifying the
transcription factors that interact with the elements. A variety of
molecular and biochemical
techniques are employed to try and identify the factors. Once the
factors are identified, we use molecular and transgenic approaches to
determine how changes in the levels of the factor alter glucokinase
gene expression and endocrine cell function.
We also use cell biological approaches to determine how changes in
islet glucokinase alter beta cell function thus causing abnormalities
in glucose sensing, a pre-requisite for developing diabetes.
Position will be available in late spring/early summer of 2001.
