US-PA, Gene Therapy Researchers Wanted
Two positions at the postdoctoral level are open and available
immediately in the field of gene therapy. These positions require a
background in molecular biology, with expertise in cloning, PCR,
Northern and Southern analyses, and tissue culture. Additional
expertise in protein manipulation and electrophoresis, Western
blotting, immunochemistry and ELISA greatly desirable.

The studies to be undertaken involve gene delivery using recombinant
viral vectors to prevent and treat HIV-1 infection, and genetic
diseases of the liver.

The laboratory atmosphere is congenial, with 10 postdoctoral fellows,
2 technicians and 2 junior faculty members. The researcher will enjoy
considerable freedom to develop and pursue research goals consistent
with these projects, and will be encouraged to identify specific
additional areas of interest.

Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
These postdoctoral positions are NIH-funded, and may evolve into
tenure-track faculty positions with appropriate productivity and
success.

POST DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION
In Plant Proteomics/Plant Cell Wall Biology

Department of Plant Biology
Cornell University

A postdoctoral research associate position is available to help develop a
new NSF-funded project, utilizing functional genomics approaches to study
plant cell walls. The project involves the application of proteomics to
characterize and map cell wall protein populations, using tomato fruit
development as a model system. The position will also involve working
closely with other tomato genomics-related initiatives at Cornell,
including microarray analyses and the mapping of cell wall genes.

The plant cell wall is a fundamental determinant of cell expansion and
differentiation and yet the enzymatic bases of its synthesis, assembly and
reorganization during growth and development remain poorly characterized.
The candidate will be expected to help develop a systematic approach to the
characterization of the protein complement of the cell wall, or cell wall
sub-proteome, during tomato fruit development. This will provide important
insight into processes accompanying cell wall modification during fruit
expansion and ripening. Broad questions to be addressed include:
1) What are the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the protein
populations present in the tomato fruit cell wall and how do those
characteristics change during fruit ontogeny?
2) How do the patterns of apoplastic protein expression differ between wild
type and non-softening mutant fruit?

The position is funded for up to three years.

Qualifications:
A PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline is
required. Experience in mass spectrometry and protein separation and
analysis would be advantageous.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae and names and contact information
of three references to Dr. Jocelyn Rose, 214 Plant Science Building,
Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. 14853. USA. Telephone: 607-255 4781;
Fax: 607-255 5407; e-mail: jr286@cornell.edu.

Cornell University is an equal opportunity employer.

Postdoctoral Research Associate Position
A postdoctoral position in the Dept. of Biochemistry, Microbiology and
Molecular Biology at the University of Maine is available immediately
to investigate the unique intracellular symbiosis between a marine sea
slug (Elysia chlorotica) and chloroplasts of the chromophytic alga,
Vaucheria litorea. The goal of this project is to identify the
mechanisms which contribute to the long-term functioning of the
plastids using integrated structural, biochemical and molecular
approaches. The project involves studies on chloroplast and protein
stability, protein targeting, lateral gene transfer, and chloroplast
autonomy. Applicants must have a strong background and demonstrated
experience in molecular biology and biochemical techniques. Previous
experience working on chloroplasts, protein import and photosynthesis
are desired. For a further description of the project please see:
Plant Physiology 123:29-38 and 124:331-342, 2000. Applicants must have
an earned PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology or a related field.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required for
interacting with colleagues, supervising students, and for preparing
manuscripts, reports and presentations.

This full-time, fiscal year position offers a salary of $27-32K
depending on experience and qualifications. The position is available
for 3 years contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance.
Interested applicants should send a cover letter and detailed
curriculum vitae and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent
to Dr. Mary Rumpho, Dept. of Biochemistry, Microbiology & Molecular
Biology, 5735 Hitchner Hall, University of Maine, Orono, ME, 04469-5735
or by Email to Phone:207-581-2806, FAX: 207-581-2801. Review of

A postdoctoral position is available to study the function of class III
myosin motor proteins in vertebrate retina. Class III myosins contain a
kinase domain and localize primarily to photoreceptor cells, where, in
Drosophilia, they have been implicated in signal transduction pathways. We
have isolated myosin III genes from fish (bass and zebrafish) and human
(Dose, AC, and B. Burnside (2000) Genomics, 67, 333-342.) and have begun
characterizing their encoded proteins. This position would involve
purification and identification of myosin III complexes from retina using a
highly-specific antibody already in hand, yeast two-hybrid screening for
interacting proteins using retina cDNA libraries already in hand, and
expression of recombinant myosin III proteins for use in motility and kinase
assays. Applicants should have experience in molecular biology and protein
biochemistry. Please email curriculum vitae and contact information for

Laboratory. The successful candidate will interact with X-ray crystallographers working
at SSRL, the Joint Center for Structural Genomics and the Berkeley Structural Genomics
Center to assist them in the rapid determination of protein structures using synchrotron
radiation.

Requirements for this position include knowledge of X-ray crystallography, and
experience in computational methods for the analysis of complex data. Extensive
experience in the use of programming languages such as C++, C or Fortran is essential.
Knowledge of a scripting language such as Python or Perl is an advantage. A Ph.D. in
computational crystallography, biology, chemistry, physics, computer science,
mathematics or engineering is required. The appointment is for a fixed term of two years
with the possibility of extension for one additional year.
