CCP4 AND THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
University of York, UK

Software Engineer and Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Reference: bionet/6029

CCP4, a collaborative computational project supported by the BBSRC to
provide
software support for protein crystallography, has undertaken to develop
a molecular
graphics package to enhance the current suite of programs. A software
engineer and a
postdoctoral fellow are required for this project.

Software Engineer: You will have a strong background in computing and
will work
on the design and implementation of (i) the event handler at the core of
the program,
(ii) an applications server to mediate between the graphics program and
scientific
applications and (iii) a mechanism for internet communication,
particularly with
databases.

Postdoctoral Fellow: You will have a scientific background in
crystallography or
molecular modelling and significant programming experience. Experience
with C,
C++ and Python languages would be an advantage. You will assist in
implementing
(i) the graphics display libraries, (ii) implementing general scientific
functionality to
support model building and structure analysis and (iii) providing
simple, automated
interfaces to the scientific functionality. This post will involve
collaboration with
scientific contributors to CCP4 in other institutions.

One post will be held in the Department of Chemistry at the University
of York. The
other could be located, if desirable, at one of the other CCP4 member
sites (eg
Oxford, Cambridge, or Daresbury Laboratory).

Appointments to both posts will be for a period of three years and the
salary will be
on the Grade IA of the scale for research staff. For further information
about CCP4
see: http://www.dl.ac.uk/CCP/CCP4 and for the York Structural Biology
Laboratory
see: http://www.ysbl.york.ac.uk/ Informal enquiries to Dr Liz Potterton
(lizp@ysbl.york.ac.uk).

More details: http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/persnl/jobs/6029.htm

US-PA, Gene Therapy Researchers Wanted
Two positions at the postdoctoral level are open and available
immediately in the field of gene therapy. These positions require a
background in molecular biology, with expertise in cloning, PCR,
Northern and Southern analyses, and tissue culture. Additional
expertise in protein manipulation and electrophoresis, Western
blotting, immunochemistry and ELISA greatly desirable.

The studies to be undertaken involve gene delivery using recombinant
viral vectors to prevent and treat HIV-1 infection, and genetic
diseases of the liver.

The laboratory atmosphere is congenial, with 10 postdoctoral fellows,
2 technicians and 2 junior faculty members. The researcher will enjoy
considerable freedom to develop and pursue research goals consistent
with these projects, and will be encouraged to identify specific
additional areas of interest.

Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
These postdoctoral positions are NIH-funded, and may evolve into
tenure-track faculty positions with appropriate productivity and
success.

Postdoctoral Research Position: Rice molecular biology
Dept of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge, UK

A three year postdoctoral position is now available to develop large
numbers of enhancer trap lines of rice (see
http://www.plantsci.cam.ac.uk/Haseloff/Home.html). These will be used
immediately in our laboratories to mark specific cell types with the green
fluorescent protein, misexpress genes involved in solute transport in
specific cell-types such as Na+ transporters, and also provide a resource
for the academic community. The successful applicant will join the groups
of Mark Tester and Julian Hibberd, and work in close collaboration with
Jim Haseloff. Initial rice transformations will be performed with Emmanuel
Guiderdoni in Montpellier, France.
The project is funded by the BBSRC. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and
experience in plant transformation and molecular biology. Salary will be
on the age-dependent research associate scale. Applications, including a
CV and names of three referees, should be sent to Dr Mark Tester: e-mail
reception@plantsci.cam.ac.uk.

The University is an equal opportunity employer.

to target degradation of oncoproteins and to inhibit their
tumorigenicity (Zhou et al. Harnessing the ubiquitination machinery to
target the degradation of specific cellular proteins Mol. Cell
6:751-756, 2000). Candidates should have experience in molecular and

Subject: FlyBase-Harvard Scientific Curators/Annotators Positions

Position Title: Scientific Curators/Annotators

Duties and Responsibilities: FlyBase seeks two scientific curators to
join our group at the Harvard University Biological Laboratories to participate
in the biological annotation of the completed genome sequence of the fruit
fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Responsibilities include the curation and
refinement of Drosophila genomic sequence annotations, and scanning and
abstracting the scientific literature on the molecular biology of Drosophila.
Curators work as a part of a team, interacting with biologists at other
FlyBase sites worldwide to develop standards of annotation, and coordinate
with software engineers to develop and improve software. Curators also
work on developing improved methods to communicate information about
the genome to the scientific community, especially via the World Wide Web,
and assist users online and at research conference workshops.

Initial appointment is for 18 months, with the possibility of renewal.

Required Education, Experience, Skills: Ph.D. in molecular biology or genetics.
Experience with molecular genetics and Drosophila biology preferred.

NOTE: FlyBase is the premier publicly funded research database of integrated
genetic, genomic, and functional data for Drosophila, one of the major
model organisms for the Human Genome Project. The FlyBase project is
carried out by a consortium of computer scientists and Drosophila
molecular geneticists at Harvard University, University of Cambridge (UK),
Indiana University, University of California, and the European
Bioinformatics Institute. For more information on FlyBase, see our
web site at: http://flybase.bio.indiana.edu

Dear colleague,

2 PhD positions are available in our group at the the laboratory of
Plant Physiology (Neuch=E2tel, Switzerland) and I would be grateful if =
you
could forward this information to possible candidates.

Kind regards,

Markus Geisler

2 PhD STUDENT POSITIONS immediately open in the laboratory of Plant
Physiology (Neuch=E2tel, Switzerland) to study the function of plant =
ABC
transporters in the model plant Arabidopsis using a variety of
approaches including molecular genetics, cell biology and biochemistry.

Plant ABC transporters have been shown to participate in detoxification
processes, however, recent results indicate that they play also a role
in plant development, either by transporting specific compounds or by
protein-protein interacting. One of the candidates will focus more on
substrates being transported by specific ABC transporters, the second
will search for interacting partners of ABC transporters (yeast
two-hybrid, FRET, etc.).

Candidates with prior experience in molecular biology/plant genetics or
plant physiology research are especially encouraged to apply and would
appreciate the exciting and challenging international research
environment at the beautiful lake of Neuch=E2tel.

Send CV, a short statement of research interests and the =
names/addresses
of putative referees preferrably by e-mail to:
