Postdoctoral positions in vision at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany

Two postdoctoral positions in vision are available in the Computational
and Cognitive Neuroscience group at the Dept. of Zoology and Neurobiology,
Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany.

One project is concerned with the mechanism of high level visual motion
perception, the analysis of optic flow, and the recognition of biological
motion. This project is funded by the German Ministry of Science and
Technology.

Another project is concerned with the dynamic visual space perception
during eye movements. This project is an international collaboration with
laboratories in Italy and the US, funded by the Human Frontier Science
Program.

For both projects, applications are invited from neurobiologists,
psychologists or physicists interested in visual psychophysics or
computational neuroscience. Starting date is flexible. Salary depends on
experience level.

The lab is equipped with video projection and computer-generated graphics
abilities, video-based eye tracking and a 20 sensor body motion tracker.
The Ruhr University Bochum is located in the western part of Germany.
There is a large and active vision community with working groups in
several departments. These include the Dept.of Zoologie and Neurobiologie,
the Institute for Neuroinformatics, the Dept. of Physiology, and the Dept.
of Psychology. The special research action "NEUROVISION" provides a forum
for interdisciplinary research in vision within the university.

A post-doctoral fellowship position is available to study the role of
accessory molecules in T cell activation and function. The lab is
studying how accessory and costimulatory molecules regulate the
outcome of T cell activation at both the cell and molecular level, as
well as how these molecules influence susceptibility to disease.
Currently, the lab is focused on studies of CD28 and CD43. Ongoing
projects utilize state of the art imaging including confocal
microscopy, transgenic and knockout mice, and retroviral gene transfer
into primary lymphocytes. Depending on interest, several projects are
available.
The lab is within the Department of Medicine and is part of the
Graduate Program in Immunology at Washington University School of
Medicine, St. Louis MO. Interested individuals should contact me
directly by Letter, FAX or email.

Cellular Protein Trafficking: A postdoctoral position is available at
the LSU Health Sciences Center, Department of Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology, to examine cellular processes that regulate the
activity and cellular distribution of glucose transporters. One
current project is to characterize the regulatory role of an adaptor
protein that binds to numerous proteins including: 1)an actin-based
motor protein, 2)the glucose transporter GLUT1, and 3)additional
proteins involved in the regulation of cell adhesion and motility.
Individuals with experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or
protein trafficking are encouraged to apply. Applicants with a Ph.D.
in Biochemistry, Molecular or Cell biology are preferred. The
Department offers an excellent and diverse research environment, with
projects in protein chemistry, physical biochemistry, genetics,
molecular biology, and developmental biology that utilize bacterial,
mammalian, yeast, Xenopus, and C. elegans model systems. The
Department also enjoys productive research ties with the Feist-Weiller
Cancer Center and benefits from access to a new Research Core Facility
containing state-of-the-art MALDI-TOF mass spec, cell sorters,
confocal and digital microscopy, DNA chip arrays, laser capture
micro-dissection, real-time PCR, and an Automated Cellular Imaging
system.

An NSF-funded postdoctoral research position in Computational
Molecular Evolution, emphasizing retroviral proteins is available
immediately. Research will be conducted collaboratively in the
laboratories of Drs. Richard Goldstein and David Mindell in the
University of Michigan Departments of Chemistry and Ecology and
Evolutionary Biology. The goals of the work are: (1) to develop and
refine models of the substitution process in protein evolution
accounting for rate heterogeneity across structural and functional
site classes; (2) to develop efficient optimization methods for
adapting these models to specific proteins and protein types; (3) to
assess validity of these models via analyses of simulated data as well
as analyses of proteins from organisms with non-controversial
phylogenies; (4) to apply these methods to questions regarding
retrovirus phylogeny. Preferred applicants will possess strong
analytical, statistical and computer skills (familiarity with C), as
well as some background knowledge and interest in molecular evolution,
phylogenetic analyses, and/or protein structural biology. Interested
individuals should send a summary of their research experience and
skills, curriculum vitae and the addresses and phone numbers of three
referees.

Studentship on EPSRC funded research project in structural
bio/chemo-informatics - Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge

Title:

Novel Computational Approaches to the Understanding and Prediction
of Protein-Ligand Interactions

Summary:

The prediction, design, evolution and energetics of protein-ligand
interactions allow a systematic and detailed understanding of binding
that will feed into the area of molecular design, particularly
in drug design (computational pharmacology).

The aim is to understand protein-ligand binding in order to aid the design
of new drugs, contribute to the prediction of side effects, the assignment
of proteins‰ molecular functions from genetic data, and the annotation of
genomes. We will develop a database of protein-ligand interactions
containing chemical, biochemical and bioinformatics data.

This will be sub-divided into characteristic datasets reflecting different
aspects of structure binding and evolution. We will carry out specific
studies based on molecular similarity in order to establish correlations
between, on the one hand, the structural, sequence and evolutionary
relationships between proteins and, on the other hand, the molecular
similarities of the ligands they bind. We hope to survey across pairs of
protein-ligand complexes in the different characteristic subsets.

We will also study interaction type usage in order to determine
characteristic patterns in protein-ligand complexes belonging to the
characteristic subsets and to cluster the complexes on the basis of these
patterns.

Training:

This will include computational methods, structural biochemistry, chemical
biology and research methods.

Situated:

This projects will be in the Unilever Cambridge Centre for Molecular
Informatics, Department of Chemistry. The new building with state of the
art facilities opened in December 2000. The centre offers a stimulating
and exciting working environment for research in one of the world's
leading chemical laboratories. New methods will be devised for creating,
manipulating and storing molecular data to deepen our understanding of
molecules and their properties and to allow novel in-silico
experimentation.
