Postdoctoral Position Available
Molecular Cardiology Research Institute
Tufts University School of Medicine-NEMC
Boston, MA

We have an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the
field of
molecular signaling and peptide-protein recognition. The project
focuses on biochemical and structural studies of the PAR1 human thrombin
receptor.
Proteolytic cleavage of the thrombin receptors activates an
extraordinarily diverse array of
physiologic responses. These include platelet aggregation, cellular
proliferation/apoptosis, cell-cell adhesion and inflammation, and
the invasive and tissue-reorganizing processes involved in
cancer.

During coagulation, the physiologic concentration of thrombin exceeds
that of its thrombin
receptor substrate. Therefore, thrombin has the difficult task of
discriminating among the various cell surface proteins to find the
receptor and cleave it in the millisecond time range. We study
this unusual mechanism of substrate-assisted domain cleavage by thrombin

and have developed a novel class of membrane-tethered anti-receptor
agents.

Our laboratory is located within the Molecular Cardiology Research
Institute, a modern, state-of-the-art facility supported by several core

units including automated DNA sequencing, oligonucleotide and peptide
synthesis, plasmid preparation, small animal surgical and physiology
lab, flow cytometry, and transgenic mouse facility. Qualifications for
this position are a Ph.D. degree; experience in mammalian cell
transfection and expression is preferred. Interested candidates should
e-mail a description of their research interests, a CV, and names of
three references to:

Postdoctoral positions are available in my laboratory at the University
of Washington in Seattle to study the role of the serine protease
neutrophil elastase in hereditary forms of human neutropenia.

Representative publications:

Horwitz, M., Benson, K.F., Person, R., and Dale, D.C. (1999) Mutations
in ELA2, encoding neutrophil elastase, define a 21-day biological clock
in cyclic haematopoiesis. Nature Genetics 23:433-436.

Dale, D.C., Person, R.E., Bolyard, A.A., Aprikyan, A.G., Bos, C.,
Bonilla, M.A., Boxer, L.A., Kannourakis, G., Zeidler, C., Welte, K.,
Benson, K.F., and Horwitz, M. (2000) Mutations in the gene encoding
neutrophil elastase in congenital and cyclic neutropenia. Blood
96:2317-2322.

Li, F.-Q. and Horwitz, M. (2000) Characterization of mutant neutrophil
elastase in severe congenital neutropenia. Journal Biological Chemistry
276:14230-14241.

Our laboratory employs a broad variety of tools, and I am especially
looking for qualified applicants with backgrounds in protease/proteinase
biochemistry, mouse transgenics and/or targeted recombination, human
genetics, or yeast genetics.

The position is fully funded. The lab is modern and well-funded. Seattle
and the University of Washington are delightful places to live.

Please direct inquiries with attached c.v. to me by e-mail. Please note
to delete "REMOVETHIS" from the e-mail address (in order for me to avoid
unwanted spam e-mails).

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ecology of Antibiotic Resistance

Position is available for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work with an
interdisciplinary group interested in microbial ecology of antibiotic
resistance within the food-animal environment. Our current research
addresses the potential for transfer of drug resistance from microbiota
on farm to food-borne pathogens like Salmonella that contaminate the
farm production environment. A postdoctoral fellow is currently needed
on project that examines the diversity of drug resistance genes and
mobile genetic elements within the gene pool of the farm’s microbiota as
well as the potential for transfer of these resistance genes to human
microflora.
Starting salary is $28,000/year, with benefits. Employment is
guaranteed for one year and extended an additional year with suitable
progress. Experience in molecular biology is desirable, but applicants

Manager: Bioinformatics Services - South African National Bioinformatics
Institute

Duration: 3 years in first instance.

                Earliest starting date: September 2001
The South African National Bioinformatics Institute
is responsible for training and research into
  		bioinformatics and computational genome informatics
in South Africa. It is a full member of the
European Molecular Biology Network and participates
in a number of international programmes to provide
access to bioinformatics training. Research is in
two major thrusts: comparative pathogen genomics,
and gene expression. The institute has high
                performance computing and powerful
                telecommunications infrastructure, and seeks to
provide the entire African continent with access to
                bioinformatics infrastructure and expertise.

The Institute is seeking a self-motivated manager
of bioinformatics services who will take
                responsibility for national bioinformatics
                infrastructure and user support/training. The
incumbent will have responsibility for managing the
biological databases and software tools provided to
South African researchers. The candidate will
                provide regular national bioinformatics training
courses and support users in the use of online
                facilities offered by the institute.

We seek an independent person with experience in
                managing biological databases, software and
computational infrastructure and the ability to
provide user support and training. It is essential
that the candidate be familiar with UNIX, at least
                one programming/scripting language, CGI scripting
                and large-scale biological data management.
Excellent communication skills are essential. The
candidate should have sufficient breadth of
experience and motivation to drive the ongoing
development of bioinformatics in Southern Africa
and should enjoy developing projects involving
                cutting-edge technologies.

                Minimal qualification and experience:

The applicant should have a minimum of a Masters
degree in a relevant scientific discipline with
                demonstrated experience in bioinformatics
                infrastructure development. Teaching and
administrative experience would be a significant
                advantage.

                Assessment information:

Candidates are requested to submit a full resume
and the names, email and telephone numbers of two
referees. Please send either an email attachment or
a letter to: Janet Kelso, SANBI, University of the
Western Cape, Private bag X17, Bellville 7535,
                South Africa.

Immunologist-

Company Background: Company developing a family of single cell secretion
growth, and in situ hybridization assays using microencapsulation and flow
cytometry. The Company is currently screening hybridoma and transfected
cells for bioprocessing customers on site or through technology transfer
using a similar secretion assay format.

We are in the process of launching a family of cytokine secretion assays
using

Gel Microdrop encapsulation and flow cytometry. This unique format permits
assessment of multiple secreted cytokines and surface markers simultaneously
on viable cells. Sub-populations of antigen specific cells can be
propagated for further analysis or immunotherapy. Th1 and Th2
sub-populations can be generated from mitogen or antigen stimulated
peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Cytotoxic T cell clones can be
programmed to kill tumor cells in vitro. Lymphocytes, monocytes,
macrophages, dendritic and stem cells can be encapsulated. Secreted IFN,
IL-4, IL-10, TNF, IL-12 can be assayed simultaneously with surface markers.

Experience: Must have significant experience using commercially available
cytokine reagents and instrumentation. Flow cytometry analysis and sorting
experience are necessary for customer and vendor interactions. Assist in
assessing reagents, developing protocols and interfacing with beta site
laboratories and distributors. Ph.D. and solid background in a commercial
environment are preferred.

Location: Cambridge, MA near MIT, Harvard and the Medical School Complex.

Compensation: Competitive Salary, 401K and Founders Equity Shares available.

Research Interests
Developmental Biology / Glycosylation and Cell Interactions
Extracellular domains of proteins are often glycosylated, i.e. modified by
covalently attached carbohydrate chains. These carbohydrate modifications
can significantly affect molecular interactions influencing cell adhesion
and signaling processes. The principal research interest of our laboratory
lies at the intersection of Developmental and Cell Biology with the field of
Glycobiology, and it is focused on elucidation of the role of glycosylation
in developmental events and cell interactions. We are using the Drosophila
model system, known for its powerful molecular genetics, in combination with
advanced biochemical and cell biological approaches.

Our laboratory studies the functions of autosomal dominant polycystic
kidney disease (ADPKD) channels (polycystins) using electrophysiology and
molecular biology. This is a new area of research initiated in 1999 by Dr.
X.-Z. Chen. Mutations in polycystins
lead to cyst formation in kidneys and various organs (heart, liver, lung
etc) in 0.1% of population. A postdoctoral/research assistant position is
immediately available for 1-2 years for a candidate with expertise in ion
channel patch-clamping.
