Closing Date: December 1, 2001
Department: Fish Science
Location: Portland, OR
General Information:
The Hydrologist will have as his/her primary duties the analysis of land management actions with potential to affect water quality or other habitat conditions in salmon bearing waters, the conduct of a funded project on sediment deposition in salmon spawning reaches of streams, and development of new research plans in key Columbia River basin streams.
Duties:
1. Conduct field work for a funded project in salmon-bearing streams of northeastern Oregon to assess fine sediment infiltration rates in spawning gravels during the egg incubation period. This work will involve field work, data analysis, report writing, budget and contracting details, and providing direction to a field technician. This is a project with three previous years of work and established protocols. However, opportunities for expanding the study to sediment delivery to the streams may exist dependent upon proposal development and funding.
2. State, federal, or tribal plans for habitat recovery, land management actions, or water quality regulation are frequently developed for the anadromous fish-bearing watersheds in the Columbia basin. These require review, improvement, evaluation for consistency with tribal restoration goals, and possibly legal challenge in coordination with tribal staff. The incumbent will need to produce recommendations for land management or water quality management that may involve extensive review and analysis of pertinent literature.
3. Conduct periodic field reviews of representative federal land management actions for consistency with regional restoration goals. Evaluate progress in habitat restoration at various spatial scales, ranging from project level to watershed or subbasin, including efforts to mitigate for increasing effects of global warming.
4. Develop multidisciplinary research programs to address critical uncertainties currently halting progress in addressing salmon habitat restoration by collaborating with CRITFC, Tribal, State, and Federal personnel.
5. Participate in litigation as necessary to support Tribal restoration programs by filing depositions and fulfilling a role as an expert witness if testimony is required.
Supervision Received/Given:

Postdoctoral Positions in Statistical Mechanics and Biophysics

One or two postdoctoral positions available at the Department of
Physics, University of Notre Dame, in the group of Professor Barabasi.
The research will focus on modeling complex networks, with emphasis on
metabolic and other cellular networks. The ideal candidate will have a
physics background, with experience in statistical mechanics and
computer simulations. Candidates with a strong analytical background
will also be considered. Familiarity with networks or biology is a
plus, but not required. Candidates with other background (e.g.
biology) will also be considered. The project involves understanding
and characterization of complex networks, data analysis and modeling.
This is a continuation of the rather successful research program that
the group pursued in the past few years.

Postdoctoral Position as posted on the Postdoc Jobs website:

http://www.PostdocJobs.com

--------------------------------

Two postdoctoral positions are available to join our team to study
neural coding of memory formation in the mammalian brain. We have
genetically engineered a variety of mutant mice in which memory can be
either enhanced and impaired, thus allowing us to uniquely manipulate
neural activity at system and behavioral level.

For one position, candidates will use our recently developed
sophisticated head-stage system (equipped with up to 32 adjustable
electrodes) to conduct the large-scale recording of ensemble activity
in transgenic mice during memory acquisition, consolidation, and
retrieval. Applicants with Ph.D. degrees should have experience in
system neurophysiology (such as place cells, head direction cells
etc), neural computation, artificial intelligence, or automation. For
a second position, we seek individuals with extensive experience on
rodent learning behaviors. Please send curriculum vitae, summary of
research experience, and three recommendation letters to Princeton
University, Princeton, NJ 08544, USA

Princeton University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action
employer.
