Informatics Scientist

Informatics Scientist (Collaborator Liaison)

The person in this position serves as a liaison between SciGenium and a
specific collaborating client, with primary responsibility for European
operations. The liaison provides full-time on-site consulting including
demonstration and support for data visualization and mining software,
understanding the collaborator's needs and conveying those to the home
office, defining software requirements to support the collaborator,
participating in prototype development, and performing data analysis.

The European liaison is part of a two-person team to support the
collaborator's needs. Along with the other liaison, who has primary
responsibility for North American operations, this two-person team must act
in a unified fashion to best represent, unify, and integrate the needs of
this client under a single client director. Effective and frequent
communication is an important aspect of success in this position.

The Informatics Scientist needs to have an understanding of information
visualization, in general. In addition, knowledge of the technical areas
being addressed by the client is needed. The candidate should have some
familiarity with exploratory data analysis, bioinformatics, and
cheminformatics and be willing to learn more in these areas. Familiarity
with existing informatics software and Windows and UNIX platforms is
desired. Experience with programming languages such as JAVA would be
advantageous.

Training and experience equivalent to a Ph.D. in mathematics/statistics,
biochemistry/molecular biology, chemistry, or computer science or an M.D.
Experience with informatics and excellent interpersonal skills required.

Two positions are available in a Molecular Endocrinology laboratory at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. One is for
a Lab Manager, the other for a Research Specialist. In both cases, I am
looking for a bright, enthusiastic, highly motivated person interested in
being part of a hard-working and friendly group studying the molecular
mechanisms of signal transduction and hormone action.

The Research Specialist position would be ideal for a recent college
graduate who would like to get experience in state-of-the-art biomedical
research prior to applying to graduate or medical school. A commitment of
at least two years is required.

The Lab Manager position is a higher grade position within the University,
requiring good organizational skills as well prior research experience.

If you are interested in either of these positions, please reply via email
with your CV and the names of three references.

Postdoctoral Research Opportunities in
MICROWAVE REMOTE SENSING OF SNOW AND ICE

Applications are sought for two postdoctoral positions for research
related
to microwave remote sensing and radiative transfer modeling of snow,
ice,
and frozen soil. One position is located at the National Operational
Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center (NOHRSC), National Weather Service,
NOAA in
Chanhassen, Minnesota. The other position is located at the NASA
Goddard Space
Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland. Both positions are for up
to 3 years. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The microwave radiative transfer modeling will include both
scattering and emission in heterogeneous media (e.g. snow, soil,
and/or
vegetation) in the 1-90 GHz frequency range, and will depend strongly
on
observational data to be collected during the NASA Cold Land Processes
Experiment (CLPX) in 2002 and 2003. These data will include ground-,
airborne-, and satellite remote sensing observations with intensive
ground
truth. The microwave modeling will be closely integrated with physical
land
surface models of snow packs, soils, and vegetation. Research
objectives will
include development of methods for forward simulation of microwave
signatures from land surface models to support assimilation of
microwave
remote sensing data.

Successful candidates will have PhD-level experience with microwave
remote
sensing and computer simulations of microwave radiative transfer,
preferably
involving dense media theory and/or integral equation models.
Familiarity
with land surface process modeling would be useful. Programming skills
in C
or Fortran in a Linux/Unix environment are required, and familiarity
with IDL
or Matlab is highly desired. Good English oral and written
communication
skills are required. Successful candidates will be expected to
participate in
field data collection and processing activities, field deployment
preparations,
and the presentation of research results.

Applications should include:
· A cover letter stating the specific name of this position
· Curriculum vitae with a list of publications
· Statement of research interests
· Ph.D. abstract, including title of thesis
· Names and addresses of three professional references

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until
a candidate is selected. U.S. citizenship is not required.

Send applications to:
Don Cline

Station Biologique de Roscoff
CNRS et Université Pierre et Marie Curie
BP 74, 29682 Roscoff, France

This position is funded by the FP5 EU program PICODIV (2001-2003)
which focuses on the diversity of picoplankton in coastal and oceanic
waters following on recent work showing that oceanic picoplankton
diversity is very high with many phyla containing uncultured
representatives (Moon-van der Staay S.Y., De Wachter R., Vaulot D.
2001. Oceanic 18S rDNA sequences from picoplankton reveal new
eukaryotic lineages. Nature 409: 607-610). Emphasis will be on the
acquisition and phylogentic analysis of rDNA gene sequences both from
newly isolated cultures and from environmental clone libraries of
eukaryotic picoplankton from coastal and oceanic waters.

Skills :

- The candidate is expected to have a strong academic background, to
have published in international peer-reviewed journals and to be able
to conduct independent research
- Experience with modern taxonomical approaches inolving rDNA genes on
bacteria or unicellular eukaryotes (cloning and sequencing of
environmental samples, phylogenetical analysis, DGGE, rRNA probes)
will be critical
- Familiarity in algal taxonomy will be highly desirable
- Working knowledge of the French language will be an essential
prerequisite for rapid integration in our team

Starting date: Spring 2002 as soon as possible
Duration: 12 months with possible extension

WormBase (www.wormbase.org) is an international consortium of
biologists and computer scientists that provides the research community
with accurate, current, accessible information concerning the genetics,
genomics, and biology of the model organism C. elegans.

An opening has become available for a senior bioinformatician to help
us improve the information content of WormBase and to develop the
system and strategy by which we assemble the database for the community.

Based in the informatics group at the Sanger Institute, your
primary duties will involve curation of genetic data in collaboration
with Prof. Jonathan Hodgkin of Oxford University and with the
Caenorhabditis Genetics Centre (www.biosci.umn.edu/CGC).

Other key duties will involve working closely with other WormBase
members to help develop the procedures which we use to assemble the
WormBase database.

Ideally, you will have a degree (preferably a PhD) in a suitable
biological discipline and will be comfortable with working in a
computer-based environment. A knowledge of UNIX and biological
database systems is desirable and familarity with perl or other
scripting languages would be advantageous. We would also welcome
applications from candidates with a strong background in C. elegans
biology who would be keen to develop their computer skills.
Commitment to science and a team spirit are important.

To apply please write with your CV and current salary details quoting
reference 356 to:

The Personnel Officer,
Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute,
Wellcome Trust Genome Campus,

HeliXense is a Life Sciences Company. HeliXense is creating a basis for =
the systematic use and adoption of genomics to increase the speed of =
pharmaceutical and agricultural product discovery and development. =
HeliXense's proprietary research platform is a unique =
third-party-extensible architecture which provides for a basis for =
organized collaboration for analyzing and modeling genomic data. =
HeliXense's operating platform / software infrastructure, called the =
gRNA (genomics Research Network Architecture), allows for the =
development and deployment of genomics-centric applications. The =
underlying system infrastructure for the gRNA is a grid that has been =
designed to integrate distributed computing with seamless data =
transactions and database queries across grids. The gRNA ideology is to =
enable scientists to prototype, develop, deploy and test =
genomics-centric algorithms and applications, consistent with the =
"hypothesis" based research that they are used to. The strategic value =
of such a system is to augment internal capabilities and accelerate =
research and development in the biotechnology / life sciences sector by =
providing appropriate tools, applications and infrastructure.
