I have funding for a postdoctoral research associate position at the GS-11
salary level ($45,285 per year) to do research on the cattle tick,
Boophilus microplus.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The proposed project will involve the generation of
genomic and proteomic data to lead to the identification of genes involved
in organophosphate pesticide resistance in the cattle tick.
Resistance-associated genes will be cloned and recombinant proteins
expressed for functional studies aimed at localizing protein regions
critical to pesticide resistance. (See: Journal of Insect Physiology, Vol.
46: 685-695, 2000; Journal of Medical Entomology, Vol. 38: 44-50, 2001.)

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Recent Ph.D. with dissertation research in
biochemistry, molecular biology or genetics is preferred. THE CANDIDATE
MUST BE A CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES.

There are several directions this project can go and though I prefer a
person with documented skill in 2-D PAGE, DNA library screening, PCR, or
expression of recombinant proteins, I would accept a very motivated
candidate with excellent bench skills who would be willing to be trained
in the techniques necessary to ensure success of the project.

Again I must emphasize that due to the position funding, the candidate
MUST be a citizen of the United States. I am truly sorry, but no
exceptions are possible. This is a US Department of Agriculture-ARS
postdoctoral research associate position and has excellent benefits and,
although there are no guarantees, would serve as a good conduit to a
possible permanent research scientist position with the agency.

Please contact me by email at:

bioinformaticist with a genuine interest in complex biological databases to
fill a critical role in the FlyBase genome database group at the Harvard
University Biological Laboratories. The successful candidate will collaborate
in developing and maintaining database and gui applications for public
research use, and in developing analytical tools for the investigation of
these datasets. FlyBase is one of the premier 'model organism' databases,
focusing on genomic and phenotypic data from the fruitfly, Drosophila. Our
group has been a leader in organizing and presenting genomic and genetic
information to the research community. FlyBase is a collaboration of ~30
computer scientists and biologists distributed at four sites in the USA and
the UK. For more information on FlyBase, see our web site at:
http://flybase.bio.indiana.edu.

Required Education:

A masters degree or equivalent in computer science or bioinformatics with
a solid background in database programming, specifically in the context of
scientific data. At least three years experience working with RDMS/SQL in
a production setting. Experience with perl in a UNIX environment is
essential. A working knowledge of java would be useful. The ideal
candidate will have an established background in bioinformatics and
database programming, with experience producing reusable software
components suitable for open distribution.
