Four important items follow: How to cancel e-mail subscriptions to
BIOSCI newsgroups, BIOSCI archive searching, the BIOSCI FAQ, and the
BIOSCI User Address Directory form. If you have not yet listed
yourself in our BIOSCI user directory, please take a few minutes to
complete and return the form below. If your personal information has
changed since you listed yourself, please send us a complete new
updated form. We can not make manual revisions to existing entries.

				Sincerely,

	 **** How to cancel a BIOSCI e-mail subscription ****

If you want to cancel your e-mail subscription to this group,
PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR UNSUBSCRIBE REQUEST TO THE NEWSGROUP ADDRESS
(NOR REPLY TO A MESSAGE POSTED TO THE NEWSGROUP)!!!

This would send your request to all of the readers of the newsgroup,
but it might still not be seen by the BIOSCI staff - thus you would
annoy many people and possibly not accomplish your goal anyway.

BIOSCI newsgroup instructions are available on the World Wide Web at
URL http://www.bio.net/BIOSCI/docs.html.

If you need personal assistance, a BIOSCI staff member can be
contacted at either of the following addresses. Please contact the
address designated for your location.

Support Address Location
--------------- --------
biosci@daresbury.ac.uk Europe, Africa, and Central Asia
biosci-help@net.bio.net Americas and the Pacific Rim

		 **** SEARCHING BIOSCI ARCHIVES ****

The easiest way to search the BIOSCI archives is to use Mosaic or
another World Wide Web browser and connect to the BIOSCI WWW home page
at URL http://www.bio.net/.

We maintain three indexes which are searchable: (1) an index of all
BIOSCI postings; (2) an index of individual journal article references
from the Table of Contents postings on the BIO-JOURNALS newsgroup; and
(3) an index of BIOSCI users including regular mail and e-mail
addresses, phone/FAX numbers, research interests, and newsgroup
participation.

E-mail users can search the BIOSCI archives by using our waismail
e-mail server. For instructions send the message

help

to waismail@net.bio.net. Leave the Subject: line blank (anything
entered on the Subject: line is ignored).

**** BIOSCI FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) SHEET ****

New users of BIOSCI/bionet may want to read the "Frequently Asked
Questions" or "FAQ" sheet for BIOSCI. The FAQ provides details on how
to participate in these forums and fix problems that you might
encounter in using the newsgroups. The FAQ and other BIOSCI
documentation is available through our WWW home page at URL
http://www.bio.net/.

The FAQ is also posted on the first of each month to the newsgroup
BIONEWS/bionet.announce immediately following the posting of the
BIOSCI information sheet.

**** BIOSCI USER ADDRESS DIRECTORY ****

Please take this opportunity to add your name and address information
to the BIOSCI User Address Database if you have not already done so.

You can fill out the address form directly through our Web page at URL
http://www.bio.net/adrform.html.

The address database is reindexed nightly for WWW access (the URL is
http://www.bio.net/). If you are not directly on the Internet but can
reach it by e-mail, please use our waismail server (send the word
"help" to waismail@net.bio.net to get instructions; any text on the
Subject: line of your message will be ignored, so put the help command
in the body of the mail message.).

MAKING SURE THAT YOUR INFORMATION IS CURRENT

This notice will be mailed bimonthly to each newsgroup. You should
check your database entry from time-to-time to see if your address
information is still up-to-date.

Jon -

Please see my previous posting. The offending poster has been identified
and the officials at University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign (UIUC) are
taking action against this individual.

Sending mail to "Postmaster" at this mailing list address will do you no
good because:

1) The system admins from UIUC would not be monitoring the list to read
your concern

2) The evil poster does not read this list - she just bulk posted to all
lists available through UIUC

3) This mailing list is *unmoderated* which means that there is no human
filtering system to remove offending material, thus no one to blame that it
slipped through.

> I realize full well that it is not an easy task to ferret this malcontent out.
> But it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

See point 3 above. There is no one to point a finger at. If all users used
the internet in a responsible fashion, human gatekeepers would not be required.
Unfortunatley, until a "bogus filter" can be written or unless someone
wishes to moderate this newsgroup, this problem is bound to continue.

> I am sure if you poll readers of the bio-matrix mailing list you will find
> MANY irrate users just now.

Indeed. In fact, this person posted to thousands of newsgroups so I suspect
the entire internet community is feeling this way. According to an official
at UIUC, the person received *thousands* of hate-mail messages in response
to these bogus postings. The account has been closed. Any flames you send
will never be read by that individual. Sending mail now will just increase
the number of deletes that the sys admin needs to perform to clean this mess
up.

Fortunatley, this poster had a university address. Action was taken by
contacting central computing at the school. (Clearly a misuse of account
privledges.) However, it is not so easy to track down info on bogus
*.com accounts. That will be the ground for future battles.

Cheers,

      -Rogene

We are doing some important clean-up work on our older mailing lists
that were established before we adopted the majordomo list management
software a few years back. This mailing list is one of the ones
affected by this work. The changes do not affect the parallel USENET
newsgroup associated with this mailing list.

So that the e-mail subscription routines will be consistent for all of
the BIOSCI mailing lists at net.bio.net, we are adopting the
convention that the <= 8 character e-mail address for each mailing
list will be the text that is used in the "subscribe" and
"unsubscribe" commands sent to biosci-server@net.bio.net.

This message only affects e-mail users who signed up on the mailing
lists at the U.S. BIOSCI node at net.bio.net. All others can ignore
the remaining details below. Please note that the UK BIOSCI node uses
different mailing list management software which incorporates the
bionet USENET newsgroup name in the SUB command, e.g.,
    sub bionet-news.bionet.jobs.offered.
UK BIOSCI subscribers should ignore the following info.

The old server commands for this newsgroup were

subscribe bio-matrix
unsubscribe bio-matrix

The NEW server commands are

subscribe biomatrx
unsubscribe biomatrx

PLEASE DO NOT send these commands to the mailing list address. You
will bother everyone on the list and not get yourself added to the
list. All subscribe and unsubscribe commands for the Americas and
Pacific Rim country BIOSCI list users should be addressed to
biosci-server@net.bio.net. BIOSCI readers in Europe, Africa and
Central Asia should use the U.K. BIOSCI node (please contact
biosci@daresbury.ac.uk for details).

If your address is on the U.S. BIOSCI mailing list for this newsgroup,
please save this message for future reference.

Two positions are available for research in protein sequences and
structure analysis applied to the Study of the Immune Molecular
Recognition Process.

Our group in Molecular Bioinformatics and Immune Recognition are
opening a new laboratory in protein modeling and sequence analysis. We
are seeking for two Ph.D. with experience in sequence and/or structure
analysis of proteins or in the the study of the molecular mechanism of
immune recognition. Our area of research is the study of the molecular
basis of immune recognition.
This problem is studied from a wide spectrum that goes from the
analysis of the structural diversity of the germline repertoire, the
comparison of the immune molecular recognition strategies in
vertebrates, the construction of a 3-d specialized database of Igs, Mhc
and Tcr and it analysis, molecular dynamics studies of the Fv, etc. We
try to integrate these studies in the context of theoretical models and
the general theory of the immune response. We are planing to extend in
the future our studies to other recognition models like those of the
endocrine or nervous systems.
The two positions available are for a period of three years of
renewal. After this period, if the work is evaluated as satisfactory
the position will come permanent.
The new laboratory is the result from an agreement between
the National University of Mexico and the Veracruzana University. The
seat of the laboratory will be the City of Xalapa at the state of
Veracruz. Xalapa (1500 m. over the sea level) is a medium size city
(300,000) and is the capital of the state of Veracruz.

RE: New Development On the Anti-Immigration Bill(HR 2202) and
			      Upcoming Seminar

Hi folks:

As of today, the House Judiciary Committee has completed its
markup on the Lamar Bill after 9 days of debate over several weeks.
Despite all the bad news, such as reduction of legal immigration and
elimination of some family categories, there are a few signs of relief.
Both outstanding researchers/professors and national interest waivers were
restored to the Bill. So professionals( scientists, post-docs, engineers
etc.) can still apply for permanent residence without labor certification
and sponsorship of their employers.

On the other hand, for those who have to apply through labor
cert, they are, as usual, still at the mercy of the Labor Dept. Any
positive change is yet to be seen.

Although waiver of labor certification and employer sponsorship is
still obtainable for those who qualify, difficulties have been on the rise
and more are expected. Nearly all four Service Centers have implemented
some newly proposed requirements that make it very difficult to obtain an
approval. According to administrative rules no law should be carried out
until it is final. Despite the rules, INS is already treating the
proposals like enforceable law. In the real world, things are not always
the way they are supposed to be. This is even more so in immigration
practice with today's anti-immigration fervor.

I am an immigration attorney specializing in employment based
immigration(1st and 2nd preference). I will hold seminars on how to apply
for a green card without labor certification and sponsorship of the employer.
The intended audiences of my seminar are professionals with advanced
degrees or a bachelor degree plus five years of work experience. I will
also cover the impact of HR 2202 on future immigration. The locations of
