On of the reason why "Life Game" is so interesting may be similar to
self-organization in living systems. I tried to simulate the system of cell
differentiation with a kind of Life Game.

I am a forensic pathologist and have a case where a bottle was thrown
against a car, a glass fragment cutting neck of a person in the vehicle
(open vehicle). Is there some kind of calculation that can be performed
using weight of sharp glass (about 3 ounces) against skin of neck (cut was
about 8 cm into neck, causing death by hemorrhage)? I need a simple set of
calculations to use for court. Don't know what kind of force would be
necessary to cause a deep neck cut. The glass scratched the back bone of the
neck. Where may I go for an answer?

INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR DIFFRACTION DATA
CRYSTALLOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

The science of crystallography has played a key role in the development
of X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and neutron diffraction for
the elucidation of the atomic structure of matter. Crystallography is an
interdisciplinary branch of science taught in departments of physics,
chemistry, geology, molecular biology, metallurgy and material science.
To encourage promising graduate students to pursue crystallographically
oriented research, the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD)
has established a Crystallography Scholarship Fund. While the Ewald
Prize is awarded every three years to an internationally recognized
crystallographer, little effort has been made by science departments to
cultivate aspiring crystallographers. Convinced of the beneficial,
scientific impact of the proposed scholarships for crystallographically
oriented research, the ICDD has solicited funds from private and
industrial sectors to support this program. The ICDD has awarded
twenty-eight scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each since 1992. The
year 2000 Scholarship Award has been increased to $2,250. Applications
for the year 2000 awards must be received by ICDD no later than 29
October 1999.

Qualifications for the applicant: The applicant should be a graduate
student seeking a degree with major interest in crystallography e.g.
crystal structure analysis, crystal morphology, modulated structures,
correlation of atomic structure with physical properties, systematic
classification of crystal structures, phase identification and materials
characterization. There are no restrictions on country, race, age or
sex. The term of the scholarship is one year. The recipient may make
application for one renewal at the end of the first year. Because a
limited number of scholarships are awarded, renewal applications will be
considered on a competitive basis in conjunction with all applications
that have been submitted up to the closing date.

Submit:

-Curriculum Vitae, listing degree(s) held and degree(s) sought.
-A one-page proposal by the graduate student describing the type of
crystallographic research to be partially supported by scholarship.
-A supportive letter from the sponsoring professor of an accredited
university or an institute of technology on institution letterhead.

Restrictions on the scholarship fund:

-The scholarship stipend is to be used by the graduate student to help
defray tuition and laboratory fees. A portion of the stipend may be
applied to registration fees to accredited scientific meetings related
to crystallography.
-No more than one scholarship will be awarded to applicants at any one
accredited institution per year.
-The funds of the scholarship are not to be used for travel.

A committee consisting of the ICDD Chairman, the Chairman of the ICDD
Technical Committee, the Chairman of the ICDD Education Subcommittee,
and three individuals without conflict of interest administer the
awarding of the scholarships. One or more accredited professors (with
no conflicts of interest) may be invited to assist in the selection of
successful candidates.

Applications must be received by 29 October 1999. Fax transmittals will
be accepted until 29 October 1999, however a hard copy of the
application must be mailed and received by ICDD no later than 1 December
1999. E-mail applications are not acceptable. Please mail to:

Hi All!!!^^
I have some questions in protein chemistry. First, how decide the hydrophobic core and the aromatic core?. I don't understand those means and creteria of those. If one amino acid has compassed another hydrophobic amino acid. how many hydrophobic amino acid is needed called to hydrophobic core and aromatic core also?.
Please send me your opinion. Thanks a lot your attention.

I think when you say "core" you mean "sidegroup".

First, aromatic. The precise definition
is a compound containing a ring with
alternating single and double bonds.
'Aromatic' comes from the word 'aroma';
most aromatic compounds smell, usually
nice. The simplest aromatic is benzene.
Aromatic amino acids include tyrosine and
phenylalanine, whose molecules both
show a benzene ring, and tryptophan,
which has a fused 5- and 6-member ring.
Histidine is a special case. Its 5-member
ring is aromatic when it is ionized.

Next, hydrophobic. That's the opposite of
hydrophilic. Groups which make a molecule
hydrophilic are polar groups like
 -NH2, -COOH, -OH, -CONH2 and -NH-C:NHNH2.
All amino acids have the first two, but
when they're linked together in a peptide
bond to form the backbone of a protein
they're less hydrophilic.

There are a number of amino acids which
have nitrogens in an aromatic ring on
the sidegroup. That makes them somewhat
hydrophilic but not as much as the above
list.

The -SH in cysteine is not considered to be
hydrophilic.

In books about proteins you'll probably
find tables giving hydrophilicity values
for each amino acid.

Not understood.

Re: The Relativity Reunion - A Millenial Essay for Men and Women
For the Upcoming August 11, 1999 Solar Eclipse:
World Cultural and Scientific Lessons Learned from a Famous Family -
A Family Systems Perspective Assisted by Computer Time Travel

    http://www.clark.net/pub/wware/einfam.html

Dear Thoughtful Internet Reader:

Were Albert Einstein and his Yugoslavian-born wife Mileva a couple whose
relationship determined the Twentieth Century? As we watch the upcoming
solar eclipse, will remembrance of "their relativity", and their daughter
and sons, have a cultural and scientific impact on the Twenty-First Century
and new Millenium?

We recently completed an essay to celebrate this century's last
anniversary of the submission of the famous 1905 paper on special
relativity (June 30, 1999) and the upcoming solar eclipse
(August 11, 1999). The essay centers on the Einstein-Maric family
and explores topics such as the marriage and complex proto-collaboration
of Albert Einstein and Mileva Maric on the theory they called "our
relativity", the mystery surrounding their daughter Lieserl and its
impact on history, as well as contemporary issues such as the solar eclipse
over areas that include both Einstein and Maric's birthplaces, the hopeful
experiment in peace occuring in the recently war-torn former Yugoslavia,
the societal integration of the talents of men and women both on earth and
in space exploration, and the ethical stewardship of science and technology,
from space stations to computer stations, from cyberspace to home and work.
Including the recent Apollo 11 mission anniversary and female Commander on
the space shuttle mission, the remembrance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki,
ethical controversy about plutonium on the Cassini fly-by, as well as
important incidents and talk about the century's most powerful families,
many important events of the human family's travel in spacetime are occuring
at this very moment that are centrally related to the themes of the essay.
We especially hope you will have an opportunity to read it prior to the
August 11th solar eclipse.

Here is a preview of some of the content and illustrative method of the
essay, which begins with a quotation from Albert Einstein:

"...we have attempted to describe how the concepts space, time
and event can be put psychologically into relation with
experience...to serve the purpose of bringing experiences into
relation with each other, so that in this way, they can be better
     surveyed..."
                                  - Albert Einstein, from Relativity

A. A Cultural Retrospective and Spiritual Family Reunion
of the Einstein-Maric Family, as we Approach the Millenium
B. Software That Depicts Nature and Nurture in Ongoing Relatedness
C. Is Lieserl with us as we watch the eclipse? A Global Family Reunion.
D. How much of Relativity was the 'Woman's Work'/'Woman's Love'
     of an intimate partnership?
E. Genes, Gender and Genius: Are there links and where do we look for
them? Are there many kinds of Genius? How do we nurture them in
all boys and girls? How does genius collaborate?"
F. What does the software reveal to us about Gender Balance?
Enhancing non-nationalistic cooperation, scientific discovery, and
     ethical applications of science.
G. What did the Einstein-Maric sons want us to learn about the
lives of their father, mother and sister?
H. Just Theories...Scientific and Cultural

mother Pauline, and the emotional cut-off between

we invite your input for any corrections, additions or suggestions. We

Hi,

I am trying to measure the quantity off enzymes
in a mixture of plasma and enzymes. The increase
of the optical density at 405 nM is proportional
to the quantity of enzymes.

My problem is the following: the curve representing the optical density
starts by
a decrease. Should I measure the increase of
the optical density starting at the time 0, or
starting at the point presenting the lowest
optical density? and why?

Thanks in advance,

Isabelle

Hello, people . . .
Has anyone in the UK tried Totalserve free access because Ive been asked to market it and I'd never heard of it before. Its new but I would like some feedback about it as I don't want to add a naff service to my range!! Me and a few people I know have tried it and it seems either very stable and fast or completely unable to connect depending what hardware you use!!!!
If there is anyone who isn't on it who wants to give it a whirl and give some feedback I'd be grateful, you can access it through my site at http://www.puk.co.uk you can hook up direct from there without a disc.
You can either reply to this with feedback or email me at web@puk.co.uk

Many thanks for any assistance you can provide

The Immortal is the story of an average truth seeker who stumbles
across a fascinating teacher, only to discover that the man is
John the Revelator of Apocalypse fame, who has been wandering the
earth incognito for the past 2000 years. John begins the task of
teaching his new student the first of the Twelve Keys of Knowledge.

The first question addressed in Book I is WHO OR WHAT AM I? The
student gives all the standard answers...and they are all wrong. The
lead character then realizes he is under the tutorage of no ordinary
teacher and must apply himself in a quest for knowledge.

Hi everybody,

For some time already, I am looking for a paper / book / webpage / or any
other source that contains a list of redox potentials for commonly used
reducing agents, like:

beta-mercaptoethanol (BME), dithiothreitol (DTT), glutathione, cysteine,
Tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine hydrochloride (TCEP.HCl) and so on. There must
be others around, as well.

In many references you can find that DTT is about 10fold better than BME.
But I found the wording always so similar that I assume the authors are just
copying from each other.
Does anybody know of a more exact reference, possibly even including more
compounds?

We have to produce proteins for in vivo experiments and cannot use BME or
DTT in final preparations, because of their toxicity. In addition, I would
be interested in their relative strength, i.e., their redox potential.

Any answer would be appreciated If possible, send me a copy of your answer
also by email

Thanks,

Achim

(LAST REVISION: 14-AUG-99)

This BIOSCI "miniFAQ" is designed to answer the questions that come up
the *most frequently*. The main BIOSCI FAQ (Frequently Asked
Questions) is accessible on the World Wide Web at URL
http://www.bio.net/.

If you can not find an answer to your question in this or other
documentation, the BIOSCI technical support staff answers e-mail
queries sent to

		       biosci-help@net.bio.net

We can only answer questions about the use of the newsgroups and
mailing lists. We unfortunately do not have the staff to do Internet
information searches or answer scientific questions. Please post
those to the appropriate BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups.

0) BIOSCI NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!!
------------------------------
BIOSCI's government funding has been expended, and we are now
operating solely from advertising revenue that we have raised from our
Web site at http://www.bio.net/. We need just a few minutes of your
time to help us serve you.

You can do two important things which will take very little time for
you individually and will immensely help us continue to help you.

First, please use our WWW system at http://www.bio.net/ to access the
archives. You can post or reply to messages via your Web browser as
described in item #1 below. Your usage helps attract sponsors. If you
contact any of our sponsors, please be sure to thank them for
supporting BIOSCI. It is critical for them to get this feedback if
they are to continue their sponsorship for the long term.

Second, if you work for a company or organization that provides
products or services of interest to the biology community, please pass
this message on to your marketing or marketing communications
department or other appropriate group. Please ask them to help
support BIOSCI by sponsoring our Web site and explain the uses and
benefits of the system to the biology community. If they are
interested, they can then contact us for further information at our
tech support address, biosci-help@net.bio.net.

1) Using the WWW to access the BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups.

All BIOSCI/bionet full newsgroups are accessible through the World

publicly or privately to both recent postings and archived messages
through one's Web browser if it is configured properly to send e-mail.
Each newsgroup is equipped with its own WAIS index. The main BIOSCI
home page also has access to the BIO-JOURNALS Table of Contents
database WAIS index and the BIOSCI user address database described in
another item further below.

2) What to do about "spams," i.e., junk mail, ads, etc.
-------------------------------------------------------
BIOSCI is a set of parallel USENET newsgroups (the "bionet" groups),
mailing lists, and a hypermail archive at URL http://www.bio.net/.
The same postings are distributed on all media (except for a small
number of mailing-list-only groups at net.bio.net). Unfortunately it
is becoming a despicable practice on the Internet (by a few people out
to make a fast buck) to do automated mass postings to thousands of
newsgroups and mailing lists. These attempts to grab free advertising
are refered to as "spams" in the usual, somewhat boneheaded, net
terminology. USENET is more susceptible to this practice, and many
spams originate on the USENET groups and then are passed on to the
mailing lists. However, spammers also get lists of mailing addresses
and hit these too, so neither medium is immune.

What should you do personally if you get junk mail?
---------------------------------------------------
Just delete it and move on without reading it further. Filing a
protest is becoming increasingly useless because spammers are often
disguising the addresses where the messages are sent from. Unless you
really understand Internet mail systems, your attempt at protest by
sending replies to the message will often end up being sent to the
address of an innocent person that the spammer is victimizing.

What can BIOSCI/bionet do to protect its newsgroups?
----------------------------------------------------
The only solution currently available is to moderate the newsgroup.
If this newsgroup is already moderated, then you are in good shape.
Moderation protects the USENET distribution from about 95% of the
spams that are being sent to date and protects the mailing lists
completely. Moderation means, however, that someone has to take the
time to review each message before it goes out. We have set up
software here that simply allows the moderator to forward to an
address at net.bio.net messages that (s)he wishes to have distributed.
This takes no more time than that needed to read the message and pass
it on, say about 1 min. per message.

Most newsgroups currently have a discussion leader who is responsible
for their newsgroup. The discussions leaders and their e-mail
addresses are listed in the BIOSCI Information Sheet which is
available on the Web at http://www.bio.net/. If a newsgroup is being
hit with too many junk postings, please contact the discussion leader
for that group and see if there is interest in moderating the group.
Please do not assume that by simply posting a complaint to the
newsgroup itself, anyone on the BIOSCI staff will act on your
complaint. With close to 100 newsgroups to run, the BIOSCI staff has
to rely on the discussion leaders of each newsgroup to report problems
directly to us at biosci-help@net.bio.net.

We will moderate any of our newsgroups if the discussion leader tells
us that the readership of the group wishes to do so and if a moderator
is willing to do the work. For most BIOSCI/bionet groups, this
entails only a few minutes of work each day.

Moderating a newsgroup will resolve probably 95% of the junk postings
on the USENET distribution. Unfortunately there are easy ways for
determined spammers to override the moderation mechanism on USENET,
but we can protect our e-mail subscribers from unwanted postings if
the newsgroup is moderated. You can also access our newsgroups over
the WWW at URL http://www.bio.net. While this Web interface will not
stop spammers from trying to post to the groups, this will give you
yet another way, besides using USENET news, to keep the junk out of
your personal mail files. For those of you with local USENET news
systems, the Web interface will also give you faster access to new
newsgroups and recent postings.

3) Examples of subscribing and unsubscribing to the mailing lists.
------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE NOTE: The BIOSCI management does NOT act on
subscription/unsubscription requests that are posted improperly to the
newsgroups and mailing lists. People who do this only bother everyone
on the lists to no avail. Please be sure to follow the proper
procedures below.

Gory details are in the BIOSCI Information sheets on the Web at
http://www.bio.net. Below we give an example utilizing the
METHODS-AND-REAGENTS list at both of our two BIOSCI sites:

Users in the Americas and Pacific Rim countries who use the BIOSCI
------------------------------------------------------------------
node at computer net.bio.net:
----------------------------

A) Determine the "listname" which is the <=8 character mail address
                                         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
for the group. These can be found in the BIOSCI Info. Sheet. For
the METHODS-AND-REAGENTS group the mailing address is
methods@net.bio.net. The listname is the portion of the address to
the left of the @ sign, i.e., "methods". The listname is used with
the "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" commands illustrated below.

B) Mail all commands in the body of a mail message addressed to
biosci-server@net.bio.net. Do NOT send commands to the newsgroup
posting addresses! Leave the Subject: line blank, any text on it
   will be ignored.

C) In the body of your message put one or more of the following
commands with an "end" command on the last line, e.g.,

   subscribe methods
   unsubscribe methods
   end

Do NOT put your e-mail address or other text on these lines. The
server only allows you to cancel your subscription if the address
on your mail header matches the address on our mailing list.
Please ask for help at biosci-help@net.bio.net if your address has
changed, e.g., if you know you are on the list but the server tells
you that you are not a member.

Users in Europe, Africa, and Central Asia who use the BIOSCI node at
--------------------------------------------------------------------
the UK-HGMP-Resource Centre (known as hgmp.mrc.ac.uk):
-----------------------------------------------------

A) Determine the "listname" which is the <=8 character mail address
                                         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
for the group. These can be found in the BIOSCI Info. Sheet. For
the METHODS-AND-REAGENTS group the mailing address is
methods@hgmp.mrc.ac.uk. The listname is the portion of the address to
the left of the @ sign, i.e., "methods". The listname is used with
the "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" commands illustrated below.

B) Mail all commands in the body of a mail message addressed to
majordomo@hgmp.mrc.ac.uk. Do NOT send commands to the newsgroup
posting addresses! Leave the Subject: line blank, any text on it
   will be ignored.

C) In the body of your message put one or more of the following
commands with an "end" command on the last line, e.g.,

   subscribe methods
   unsubscribe methods
   end

Please ask for help at biosci@hgmp.mrc.ac.uk if your address has
changed, e.g., if you know you are on the list but the server tells
you that you are not a member.

4) The BIOSCI user address and research interest directory.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please take this opportunity to add your name, address, and research
interest information to the BIOSCI User Address Database if you have
not already done so.

You can fill out the address form directly through our Web page at URL
http://www.bio.net/adrform.html.

The address database is reindexed nightly for WWW access (the URL is
http://www.bio.net/). If you are not directly on the Internet but can
reach it by e-mail, please use our waismail server to access the user
directory. waismail use is described above. You can also request a
user address form by e-mail from biosci-help@net.bio.net.

Please check your database entry from time-to-time to see if your
address information is still up-to-date. Because of our limited
personnel resources, we ask that you resubmit a *complete* form to
revise your entry; we only replace complete entries and do not have
resources to edit old forms.

Hello. This is a great resource. I am posting to announce that the WWW
Virtual Library (WWW VL), the oldest directory on the Web, is looking
for new maintainers for sites in the biosciences. To look at the list
of present sites (and so deduce what could be added), see <a
href="http://vlib.org/Biosciences.html">http://vlib.org/Biosciences.html</a>.
This is a great opportunity to convert a present site or set up a new
site as a WWW VL site, meaning instant traffic (from a top level index
and WWW VL search engine) and recognition of your expertise from people
in the field and Web surfers. We are especially interested in sites in
the following areas: biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology,
immunology, evolution, different model organisms like zebrafish, C.
elegans and Arabidopsis, zoology and protocols. If you'd like to
participate, just e-mail Gerard Manning at <a
href="mailto:ger@ceolas.org">ger@ceolas.org</a> or me.

Regards,

Gabriel Fenteany

Two postdoctoral positions are available immediately in the Dept of
Microbiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). These
positions are in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Prevelige.

1) A postdoctoral position is available to study the interactions
between the structural domains of the HIV Gag polyprotein in polymers
assembled in vitro, and in non-infectious budded particles. Amide H/D
exchange as detected by mass spectrometry will be employed to detect
intersubunit interfaces, and dynamic flexibility within the immature and
mature virions, and relate these determinations to the available high
resolution structures. This position will afford the applicant the
opportunity to develop skills in state of the art mass spectrometry,
protein purification, and eukaryotic molecular biology. The project is
collaborative with members of the UAB Center for AIDS Research (CFAR)
The UAB CFAR is a top ranked research center, with an outstanding group
of interdisciplinary researchers. A Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry or
Biophysics with experience in the purification and handling of proteins
is preferred. This position is open immediately.

2) A postdoctoral position is available to study the kinetics and
thermodynamics of protein/protein interactions during the assembly of
the bacteriophage P22. Bacteriophage P22 is a model system for the
assembly of dsDNA containing viruses, as well as for the control of form
determination in the assembly of supramolecular assemblies. The project
will involve the use of calorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, small
angle X-ray scattering and and spectroscopic techniques (CD,
fluoresence) to characterize the interactions between the coat and

Athletes, work-out devotees and cholesterol-compromised people take
note: The active ingredient of a rare mushroom that grows at 14,000
feet in Tibet and was reserved only for Chinese royalty has been
synthesized. Cordyceps sinensis has been clinically tested to improve
lung capacity and increase stamina and energy. In most cases it will
also increase the HDL (good) cholesterol level. No side effects.
Not sold in stores. $24.95 for month's supply. Also, we have
standardized green tea capsules equivalent to four cups of green tea.
One hundred times more potent an antioxidant than vitamin C, green
tea polyphenols are the only antioxidants that penetrate the cell
membrane and protect the DNA. Studies show they kill prostate cancer
cells (Mayo Clinic) and prevent or alleviate rheumatoid arthritis
( Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences). Our product has
97% total polyphenols-more than any other product in the industry, by

James,
I am writing to you to say that I have used Reactive and I have enjoyed the
product immensely. I have been using this products since last fall and I
have truly gound that it works. With it I have reduced my stress levels from
work, I have enjoyed better sleep with a feeling of recovery upon waking,
and my mood has improved when I use the product.

Also these products have helped my recovery from working out in the gym.
I will continue to use this product as long as it is made available.
Thanks,
Jason

James, I would love to give you a testimonial on reactive. I have always
been a chronic insomniac, and I've tried every single type of sleeping aid.
Either it wouldn't work or it would leave me groggy and tired the next day,
and I would be knocked out for ten hours of unsatisfactory, dreamless
sleep. Then I would build a tolerance to it and it would cease to work.
Reactive worked instantly, and I would wake up well rested, alert, and evn
more energetic and positive than I've ever felt. Much to my delight and
surprise, I also found that my memory improved, which really helped me at
school, and my sex drive, which had been dormant for a few months now
due to stress, just went through the roof. My boyfriend finds it hard to
keep up with me...pardon the pun. The only thing is that I only sleep for
a few hours, not the traditional 8, but I also found that with reactive, you
don't need as much sleep.

Dear sir, I want to tell you how pleased I am with your product "ReActive."
I am a parish pries with a large congregation which means I must work very
long hours. I also used to suffer from sever leg cramps that would keep me
awake for hours. Since I have begun using ReActive according to the
label directions, I go to sleep quickly, sleep soundly without any leg cramps
and wake up earlier, feeling better than I have ever felt before. In short, IT
WORKS FOR ME! It has improved my quality of life by a huge amount.
Thank you for marketing this product in such a convenient way. Sincerely
yours, Fr. Brian

..And I have spoken to Dr. Ward Dean and Steven Wm. Fowkes (suthors
of GHB The Natural Mood Enhancer) and they have said very positive
things about GHB precursors. Dr. Ward Dean said that there have been
two year toxicology studies where animals were given massive doses of
gamma-butyrolactone and it normalized ekg's, shrunk tumors, and
suppressed ethanol intake. He said to me "That's good stuff." Steven
Fowkes has said however that for every one study of GBL there are
one hundred GHB studies and he is an expert in the field of organic
chemistry so I believe he knows what he is talking about. I have
several articles of the newsletter he publishes that explain the chemical
reactions that go on inside the body when one consumes GBL and other
precursors... anon from Florida

note : GBL, also know as 2(3h) Furanone Di-hydro is the active ingredient
in ReActive

Visit www.thewebmastersclub.com/reactive/bill.htm for information on the
bill that would outlaw GHB and ban the sale of Reactive (GBL)
