Call for Papers/Abstracts

Recent advances in computer technology have provided the tools and the
environment to study, analyze, and better understand complex systems. This
technological development has enabled researchers to collect and analyze
massive amounts of data to a scale previously not possible. The impact of
this technology is now being felt in the medical field and in the biological
sciences. In recent years, research in interdisciplinary areas such as
Bioinformatics and computer assisted medical decision-making has
dramatically intensified. METMBS'2000 aims to provide a platform for
researchers to present and discuss recent breakthroughs in this area.

The METMBS'2000 Conference will be held concurrently (i.e., same location
and dates) with the International Conference on Parallel and Distributed
Processing Techniques and Applications (PDPTA'2000), the International
Conference on Imaging Science, Systems, and Technology (CISST) and the
International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IC-AI).

You are invited to submit a one-page abstract or a draft paper of about 4
pages, and/or a proposal to organize a technical session (see below for
submission information). All accepted submissions will be published in the
conference proceedings.

THE NAMES OF TECHNICAL SESSION CHAIRS WILL APPEAR AS ASSOCIATE EDITORS ON
THE COVER OF THE CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS.

SCOPE

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

o Bioinformatics: This includes informatics techniques in genomics gene
sequencing, gene pattern discovery, gene pattern-function studies, and other

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS

Prospective authors are invited to submit three copies of their one-page
abstract or draft paper (about 4 pages) to F. Valafar (address is given
below) by March 6, 2000. E-mail and Fax submissions are also
acceptable. The length of the Camera-Ready papers (if accepted) will be
limited to 7 pages. Papers must not have been previously published or
currently submitted for publication elsewhere.

The abstract and the first page of the draft paper should include: title of
the paper, name, affiliation, postal address, E-mail address, telephone
number, and Fax number for each author. The first page should also include
the name of the author who will be presenting the paper (if accepted) and a
maximum of 5 keywords.

PROPOSAL FOR ORGANIZING TECHNICAL SESSIONS

Each technical session will have at least 6 paper presentations. The
session chairs will be responsible for all aspects of their sessions,
including soliciting papers, reviewing, selecting, ...

The names of session chairs will appear as Associate Editors in the
conference proceedings. After the conference, some sessions will be
considered for publication in appropriate journals as Special Issues with
the session proposer as the Guest Editor of the journal.

Proposals to organize technical sessions should include the following
information: name and address (+ E-mail) of the proposer, title of session,
a 100-word description of the topic of the session, and a short description
on how the session will be advertised (in most cases, session proposers
solicit papers from colleagues and researchers whose work is known to the
session proposer).

Mail your proposal to F. Valafar (address is given below); E-mail
submissions are preferred.

EVALUATION PROCESS

Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity, and
soundness. Two researchers in the topical area will referee each paper.
The Camera-Ready papers will be reviewed by one person.

PUBLICATION

The conference proceedings will be published by CSREA Press (ISBN). The
proceedings will be available at the conference. Some accepted papers will
also be considered for journal publication (soon after the conference).

Hi there,

can anyone tell me if it is possible to grow human hairs in vitro? If so,
what medium would I need?

Could I just take some hair root cells and grow them into a mature hair? Or
is it more complicated.

Thank you for answering,
Cees.

Hello,

Perhaps dansyl chloride is a useful reagent to try. It will bind covalently

Any advice on this subject would be gratefully received.

I have been involved in a new theory for circulation, which has identified
gravity as a contributory factor. My work began in 1994, when I decided to
find out how water circulates in trees and plants.

If I am correct, then there should be a marked difference in short people,
when compared to tall people. A baby for instance has a faster heart rate
than an adult. It could be shown that the distance from the lungs to the
bladder, is related the heart and respiration rate.

Our GP, uses a sliding scale to asses lung expiration against height.

The British Heart Foundation are also trying to find published papers on the
subject for me.

Thank you for your time in advance.

The Physics of Consciousness
The Quantum Mind and the Meaning of Life
Evan Harris Walker

“The next big and creative encounter between science and religion is shaping
up precisely along the fault lines Evan Harris Walker explores in this very
suggestive, well-crafted and highly readable book. But he is way ahead of
the pack, and he is defining the very terms of that encounter. As a
theologian and life-long student of religion I welcome his balanced tone and
well-informed analysis. This is a book that simply cannot be ignored as the
question of the ‘meaning of life’ becomes—as it surely will—more and more
central.”
—Harvey Cox, Harvard Divinity School

For a thousand years, philosophers and theologians have pondered the nature
of ultimate reality. For decades, neurologists, psychologists, and
physicists have struggled, in vain, to explain the phenomenon of
consciousness—how a piece of matter, the brain, can create the sentience
that becomes the seat of our whole being…

When the woman he loved died of leukemia nearly half a century ago, author
Evan Harris Walker began his personal search to determine “what we really
are and what, if anything, remains when the tissues of the brain and body
have ceased their functions?” A scientist by profession, he looked to
physics for the answers to these most profound questions. Now there is a
clear path to the answer, leading through the dense jungle of quantum
physics, Zen, and subjective experience. This book chronicles both his quest
and his conclusions.

Evan Harris Walker, founder and director of the Walker Cancer Institute, has
made major scientific contributions in astronomy, astrophysics, physics,
neurophysiology, psychology, and medicine. Since he received his Ph.D. in
physics from the University of Maryland in 1964, he has published more than
a hundred papers in scientific journals and popular magazines, and holds a
dozen patents. He lives in Aberdeen, Maryland.

Post-doctoral Positions in X-ray Crystallography and Computational
Biology

Two post-doctoral positions are available immediately, one in
experimental and one in computational aspects of protein
crystallography.
Applicants for the first position should be experienced in practical
aspects of protein crystallography and structure determination.
Experience in cloning and protein expression is also desirable.
Crystals
are already in hand for one novel carotenoid-binding protein.
Subsequent
projects will diversify to include work on self-assembling proteins and
other proteins with repetitive or otherwise unusual architectures.

The second position is in the area of computational crystallography,
but may also include other aspects of computational biology such as
genomics or protein structure analysis. The successful applicant
should have a strong background in scientific programming, an
understanding of numerical methods, and an ability to solve complex
problem. Familiarity with crystallographic and biological structure
problems is desirable, but applicants with backgrounds in dynamics
simulations or other areas of computational physics are encouraged to
apply.

The UCLA macromolecular structure groups are well-equipped for
crystallography and computational analysis. Shared facilities include
three RU-200 rotating anode generators, two RAXIS imaging plates and
one CCD detector, and a network of over 20 DEC Alpha and other
workstations.

                           Boston, MA 02215

This one-day event celebrates the tenth anniversary of our department. It
will be filled with talks by past graduates of the department, and will
include plenty of time for discussion and celebration. The event is open to
the public and there is no admission fee. If you plan to attend, please send
email to Carol Jefferson (caroly@cns.bu.edu) by May 1, 2000 so that we
can estimate attendance for purposes of planning enough food and drink.

The celebration will come right before the Fourth International Conference
on Cognitive and Neural Systems, which occurs from Wednesday, May 24
through Saturday, May 27. This conference drew around 300 participants
from 31 countries last year, and focuses on the two themes:

How Does the Brain Control Behavior?

How Can Technology Emulate Biological Intelligence?

Hello

I'm writing and implementing a protocol to provide application distribution
in a fault tolerant scalable and consistent manner across the internet.
Using wasted CPU cycles of home and office PC's my software will run
passively in the background of volunteers providing the super computer power
of SETI@Home but in a completely programmable and multi-tasking fashion.
Essentially it is a multi-threaded programmable OS running across millions
of computers.

Whether your a high-school wishing to demonstrate sophisticated fluid
mechanics to your students or a bio-tech lab wishing to fold the latest
protein or a world power restricted from access from super-computers, I
believe I have the distributed enterprise software for you. Check out my
home page at

Helo all,

I was hoping one of you might be able to help me. I am looking for the name of
a company that manufactures a "perfusion pencil" that takes eight solution
inputs and funnels them to one output. It is used for applying drugs to cells.
I had a flyer from this company, and I misplaced it. If anyone knows what I
am refering to, I would really appreciate the info!

Thanks in advance,

H.

I have an internet site http://freespace.virgin.net/john.hewitt1/ "A Habit
of Lies - How Scientists Cheat." The field in question is cell biology,
particularly the question of motility, how cells move.

The site is an antiestablishment document. What it says, put briefly and
rather bluntly, is that the currently established ideas in this field are
wrong and incompetent; moreover, that they are sustained in preeminence only
by misrepresentations of the field committed by its leading figures.

My site has a links page and I am looking for other antiestablishment sites
in science. The kind of thing I have in mind will be from
----> People who are opposed to current ideas and offer a rational case to
support their own alternative views.
----> Individuals who assert that their own work has been stolen by
establishment figures. ----> Sites which challenge scientific assessment
methodologies.

If anyone knows of such work, or other similar sites, can they E-mail me the
address as I would like to look at it.

I am always happy to hear comments about my own site and would be especially
interested in hearing from anyone who would care to defend the establishment
ideas and behaviour that it describes.

Should anyone reply to this posting, can they E-mail me
(john.hewitt1@virgin.net) a copy, stating where it is, otherwise I may not
read it.

Sincerely Yours

John Hewitt

I have some values of wet compact bone, though I don't know if they can be
usefull for you. I have seen in different papers two different results
:0.41 and 0.31. I think your case is closer to the first one, because the
second one is for longitudinal bones......

I currently have a number of positions open in my group (in
particular for a PhD student) to work on the Cph1 phytochrome from the
cyanobacterium Synechocystis (see Hughes et al. 1997, Nature, 386:
663; Hughes & Lamparter, 1999, Plant Physiol., 121, 1059-1068). We
use molecular-genetic (expression cloning, in vitro mutagenesis,
protein chromatography, crystallography) and other methods to study
the structure and function of this photoreceptor. In the process, we
collaborate with other groups in a newly-established special research
program studying protein structure/function (SFB 498) as well as with
numerous colleagues throughout the world. In my lab I stress the
importance of a friendly atmosphere, not only excellent science.

There's heaps of info at U.Mich. Dentisty site ....
http://www.lib.umich.edu/libhome/Dentistry.lib/Dental_tables/toc.html
In summary, about 0.3 for the bone supporting teeth.

I would, however, expect cranial bone to have a lower value, depending on
the analysis
that you are intending. Is it valid to assume the cranium is a homogeneous,
isotropic material anyway?

Anyay, in recent impact studies, Stalnaker and later Willinger
used E=6000MPa and a poissons ratio of 0.21 for the skull.

Hello,
I'd like to know the temperature different between dry ice/ethanol and
liquid nitrogen. Can we use liquid ethanol instead of liquid nitrogen?
I'd like to do freeze-thaw for enlargement of the liposome. If someone
know please let's me know. Thanks for your kindness.

Just from the top of my head: dry ice -80 C
liq nitrogen -190 C

Could be a few degrees off.

Cees.

** Announcing NLREG -- Nonlinear Statistical Regression Program **

               http://www.nlreg.com

NLREG is a powerful statistical analysis program for Windows 95/98 and NT
that performs linear and nonlinear regression analysis and curve fitting.
NLREG determines the values of parameters for an equation, whose form you
specify, that cause the equation to best fit a set of data values. NLREG
can handle linear, polynomial, exponential, logistic, periodic, and
general nonlinear functions.

NLREG features a full programming language with a syntax similar to C
for specifying the function that is to be fitted to the data. This allows
you to compute intermediate work variables, use conditionals, and even
iterate in loops. With NLREG it is easy to construct piecewise functions
that change form over different domains.

NLREG performs true nonlinear regression, it does not transform the
function into a linear form. As a result, it can handle functions that
are impossible to linearize such as:

  Y = Amplitude*SIN(Freq*X+Phase) + A*EXP(X);

Another advantage of handing the function in true nonlinear form is that
the minimization of the sum of squared residual values (i.e., "least
squares") is based on the true nonlinear value rather than some linearized
transformation.

In addition to computing the optimal values of the parameters, NLREG can
generate plots of the data points and the fitted equation. It can also
plot the distribution of residual values.

In addition to performing classic nonlinear regression, NLREG can be used
to find the root or minimum value of a general nonlinear function. It can
also be used in a special form where the independent variable is omitted;
an interesting application of this is "circular regression" where a circle
is fitted to a set of data points.

NLREG is in use at hundreds of universities, laboratories, and government
agencies around the world (including the U.S. Navy, Harvard, and Duke).
NLREG has been validated using the NIST statistical reference datasets;
the results are available on the NLREG web page.

The price of NLREG is only $65 ($70 if outside the USA), which is far
below the cost of comparable commercial regression programs. And you can
download a shareware demonstration version of NLREG to try out before you
decide to purchase it.

the web site:

I have some human metabolic data given in terms of centimeters of oxygen
consumed
I am looking for a conversion factor with reference to convert cubic
centimeters of oxygen consumed per 100 grams per minute to calories consumed
per 100 grams per day.
I can, of course, calculate the conversion factor for minutes to days, but I
do not know the conversion factor from oxygen consumption to substrate.

Thanks

Russell
