I recently completed a science fair project for school dealing with the
effects of Far - Infrared rays on acidity. I found this topic very
interesting and would really like to continue my study and have the ability
to research FIRs in greater depth. However, to complete my experimination I
used a Far - Infrared heating plate which I was able to obtain from a
distributer of alternative medicine products. This plate however does not
emit a strong enough frequency of FIRs as I would like in order to conduct
further studies. If you have any suggestions concerning a better source of
FIR's or have any comments or tips concerning my project or possibilities
for further studies please let me know. Thank you for your help

I was wondering, if there exists a dependency between the maximum
saturation of a gas (oxygen) and the viscosity of the solution caused by
a high concentrated cosolvent (e.g. sucrose, 3M).

Is there something known about this problem in the world of science?

It's hard to see how thermodynamics depends on viscosity rather than
concentration and identity of the solute. A very small concentration
of high MW polyacrylamide will give you a very viscous aqueous
solution. It's still mostly water.

Hi Uncle Al,

I am not searching for a viscous solution mostly consisting of water.
I am trying to find a relationship between different viscous solutions and
their capacity to solve gas (to the maximum saturation).
Does a physical formula or chemical rule exist for THIS problem???
Thanks,

Klemens Raithel

It is my understanding that a solution can theoretically dissolve the same
amount of gas regardless of viscosity (if that is the only variable).

However, as can be learnt from vulcanology, viscosity may affect the
apparent solubility. Granitic, or high silica magmas are very viscous, and
have a much higher gas content (4-6%) than basaltic magmas which are lower
in silica (~1% gas).

This is due largely to the viscosity, and the fact that the viscous magmas
do not release the gas nearly as readily.

I would assume that the opposite effect can also be noticed, in that gases
will dissolve slower in a viscous solution, possibly to the extent that the
same concentration may not be reached in a practical time frame.

Cheers,
Mitchell

DEAR BIONET.BIOPHYSICS

I am a physicist investigation the Structural Model of Personality
in Psychology.
Current research has lead into the area of BRAIN GROWTH. Here I
am referring to total brain size as a function of age.. this is usually
graphically displayed by the growth curve:

http://people.ne.mediaone.net/ghammond/growth5.JPG

A staggering literature on malnutrition (esp. in the 3rd world) has
established beyond doubt that malnourishment reduces human brain
growth. The actual size of the brain in both infants, children and
adults suffering from chronic malnutrition is substantially reduced.
Naturally this directly impacts intelligence. Averages of 15 IQ point
deficits due to malnutrition stunting are common.
Recent reports by Muslim authorities report that as much as 80% of
the children in their African and Eastern populations suffer from
substantial malnourishment and consequent brain development
intelligence deficits. More generally, this is broadly representative
of 3rd world populations. Naturally, lower levels of poverty in the
industrialized world are expected to have lesser impacts on brain
growth, nevertheless, it is obvious that some brain growth deficit,
due to poverty, stress and nutrition is probably experienced by a
substantial fraction of the entire world population.
The authorities cited here commonly refer to a persons
"genetic potential" when they speak of stunted growth either of
stature or intelligence. In other words, they assume that each
person has a genetic "design size" or theoretical size that they will
reach under normal conditions, and that severe deficits such as
"low birth weight" or "nutritionally reduced stature" etc. are
so severe in some populations that there is hardly a need to measure
it to recognize it as an obvious growth deficit below normal size.
That is, a deficit below the normal "genetic size" of the individual.
All of this then, has brought me round to the following scientific
question. It turns out that in psychometric factor analysis of
population intelligence, that this "brain developmental decrement"
can be identified.. and it turns out to be of extreme theoretical
importance in Psychology. In fact, there is a strong theoretical
indication that this phenomena is responsible for the historical
mental phenomena that we commonly refer to as "God".
Now, the question I have for the scientists on this newsgroup
is the following. Variation in intelligence in any random population
sample is obviously going to vary because of the "genetic variation"
among the subjects as well as this now identified "development decrement".
The question is; is there anyway to statistical separate these two
effects? As you can see, this comes down to the old question of
trying to separate Nature from Nurture. Usually, in western school
systems for instance, it is assumed that Nurture (say malnutrition)
is not a serious factor, so that all of the difference is assigned
to Nature (or genetic) differences. In the 3rd World malnutrition
cases, the Nurture part overshadows the Nature part so that all of
the variation is assigned to Nurture (malnutrition/development).
This is just more clear proof that both Nature and Nurture contribute
to intelligence.
What I am trying to prove however, is a more general fact about the
Nurture component of intelligence. I want to show that there is a
"population brain growth decrement" in the entire human race..! In
other words, according to my theory, if you could actually measure
the average brain growth curve for the entire world population, it
would actually lie BELOW the theoretical "genetic potential" curve
for the same entire population. In other words, according to my theory,
the entire human race, average-wise, actually has a measurable
brain growth deficit (due to the historical standard of living). From
the above discussion about malnutrition it would seem that the truth of
this fact is so obvious that no one would dispute it. However, the
question of scientifically measuring it has arisen now that it
has been identified as an important psychology factor. The basic question
is; how big is it?
If any scientist or bio-statistics expert, or expert in brain growth
statistics would have any suggestions as to how one might estimate this
quantity from the huge archive of growth data that is now available,
please post your suggestions, comments or questions to this post.
Thank you, George Hammond, MS Theoretical Physics

George,

Your ideas I believe are related to Biologic Relativity - Grigg. I
reference this at my site http://turn.to/ai
under the Historical Connections link. I have not had a chance to write up
an abstract of this very important work. There are about 350 examples of
this equation in biological systems.

Hi Ron,
Christ, a voice from the past. I haven't heard from you for
several years. I see you're still working on AI.
I checked your website but couldn't find the relevant article.
They have managed to separate Nature from Nurture in Intelligence
studies as you know.. I think the figures are 60-40% or something
like that.
According to my theory this is caused by genetics vs. brain growth,
so you should be able to extract the same statistic from physiologic
data, I would think.. brain growth data. It should even show up in
simple growth curve height measurements for Christ sake.
Keep me posted if you run into anybody who has some ideas in this
area.

Hi, all

I have just opened a new web-page which will try to bring opinions on
the hottest issues of our advanced technology times, from bio-technology
to artificial intelligence, from quantum gravity to space colonization.
The great old pioneer of the space Age Arthur Clarke at some point
encouraged me in my efforts to create a free, uncensored but
skeptically-moderated platform of discussion for all ideas, and your
views are welcome too.

The URL is

www.conrado.net

Also, in these paranoid times you may want to keep an eye on the
Continental flight of April 19th, London gatwick to Portland via

A postdoctoral position is available to study the structures and
dynamics of the enzymes in the shikimate and folate biosynthetic
pathways. Since the shikimate and folate biosynthetic pathways are
unique to microbial and plant worlds, the two pathways are ideal targets
for development of antimicrobial agents and herbicides. The long-term
goals of the projects are to elucidate the structure-function
relationships of these proteins that account for their catalytic
mechanisms and to design specific inhibitors that may become new
antimicrobial agents. A variety of techniques is employed in these
projects, including recombinant DNA, biochemical, and biophysical
methods. The main structural technique is multidimensional NMR
spectroscopy. These projects are of great biomedical significance,
especially in light of rapidly increasing antibiotic resistance in
recent years that has rendered the current antibiotics ineffective for
treating many microbial infections and caused a worldwide health care
crisis.
Our laboratory is well equipped for protein NMR spectroscopy.
Instrumentation includes three computer workstations (one from SGI and
two from Sun) and 500 MHz and 600 MHz Varian NMR spectrometers. The 600
MHz Varian Inova NMR spectrometer is equipped with four rf channels and
tri-axis pulsed field gradients and is dedicated to biomolecular NMR
studies.
The initial appointment for the position will be two years and is
renewable upon mutual agreement. The applicants should have experience
with multidimensional NMR spectroscopy. If interested, please send a CV
along with telephone numbers and email addresses of three references to
the address below. Email responses are encouraged.

I am guessing that the curve for the Secular
Trend (in height, weight, intelligence, lifespan etc) looks
approximately like the following:

http://people.ne.mediaone.net/ghammond/seculartrend.bmp

anybody have any opinion as to whether this graph of the
celebrated "Secular Trend" is near correct, or know of any
papers, textbooks or authors who have published their own
version of this famous anthropological logistics curve?

strain. It is hypocritical of a geration practically raised on the stuff to
claim it a hazord. Nature, and evolution have produced the most toxic, and
hazordous plants, or they would never be catagorized as poisonous plants,
funguses, etc. The real difference here is that science must obey the law,
and they literally will be held accountable if a problem should ever arrise.
No-one has insisted of God, not to make poisonous plants, create them, or
remove them from history, and gained any ground in convincing the creator
not to. Tear, and serin gas are both derived from plants. The research
into genetically engineered food stuffs directly indicates a different
series of rules, regulations, and laws, and is by no means chemical or
biological weapons research. If all you can percieve as true is evolution,
then you never stoped the most poisonous of creature, and have coexisted
knowing, or able to learn the difference. Although, scorpions, spiders,
snakes, poisonous fish, jelly fish, and huge families of bacteria, and viral
infections, and diseases exist, and persist, there was never a scientific
community, or legal issue of what would, or would not exist, only which
would survive. If a genetic engineer produced any one of those critters on
the list, and any one of them didn't exist outside of bacterial, and viral,
they would never have multiplied to an extent that any one of them wouldn't
just co-exist with the rest of the life on this planet. You should feel
safe that what they are doing is big enough to see, big enough to recognize.
The natural radiation from the sun, cosmic rays will still continue to alter
genetic materail. Believe it or not, the course of natural selection is a
victim of natural splicing. You wouldn't think that the gene of a blade of
grass could be altered as you walked over it but, that will always be the
case. The statistical odds are that a gene would be spliced, and as a
result be graphed by the healing process. Even the growers that grow only
by natrual means, wind up with freak plants. A freak ear of corn, a freak
carrot, or possibly a freak eggplant. In my past experiances, my parents
usually grew a family garden, and you can tell when they've went off of the
genetic track. It's just that no-one clones these oddities, or goes to the
trouble of being sure that they go to seed, and those seeds get germinated.
You can use gene finger printing, and find these anomolies any time they
catch your eye. There are greenhouses, and entire farms where a kid just
does find something out of place. It never had to be the genetically
altered field that produced it because, even the naturally grown field is
subject to the environment. Cosmic rays bombard the Earth all day, the sun
is at the peak of it's solar cycle. If anything this is the perfect time
for science to prove a point.

In the future, there will be more people, and less land to grow food on,
and if you don't allow science to do it's part, we may never be able to feed
them all. That is what bio-enginered foodstuffs are all about. People who
apply themselve to their, and your future. People who want to insure it for
you, and the next generation.

The Lone Protestor.

I agree, but most people are so influenced by utterly misguided media
campaigns and their own mistrust of politicians that it's hard to really
convince anyone. I think this issue tells us more about who the public
trusts (i.e. extremist focus groups, editors etc..) than anything to do with
GM.

I'm with you all the way
