an interdisciplinary branch of science taught in departments of
physics, chemistry, geology, molecular biology, metallurgy, and
material science. To encourage promising graduate students to pursue
crystallographically oriented research, the International Centre for
Diffraction Data (ICDD) has established a Crystallography Scholarship
Fund, now known as the Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship Fund.
Its name was recently adopted to honor the founder of the fund, Dr.
Ludo Frevel. While the Ewald Prize is awarded every three years to an
internationally recognized crystallographer, little effort has been
made by science departments to cultivate aspiring crystallographers.
Convinced of the beneficial, scientific impact of the proposed
scholarships for crystallographically oriented research, the ICDD has
solicited funds from private and industrial sectors to support this
program. The ICDD has awarded thirty-three scholarships since 1992.
The year 2000 Scholarship Awards were in the amount of $2,250 each.
Applications for the year 2001 awards must be received by ICDD no later
than 31 October 2000.

Qualifications for the applicant: The applicant should be a graduate
student seeking a degree with major interest in crystallography e.g.
crystal structure analysis, crystal morphology, modulated structures,
correlation of atomic structure with physical properties, systematic
classification of crystal structures, phase identification and
materials characterization. There are no restrictions on country, race,
age or sex. The term of the scholarship is one year. The recipient may
make application for one renewal at the end of the first year. Because
a limited number of scholarships are awarded, renewal applications will
be considered on a competitive basis in conjunction with all
applications that have been submitted up to the closing date.

Submit:
„h Curriculum Vitae, listing degree(s) held and degree(s) sought.
„h A one-page proposal by the graduate student describing the type of
crystallographic research to be partially supported by scholarship.
„h A supportive letter from the sponsoring professor of an accredited
university or an institute of technology on institution letterhead.

Restrictions on the scholarship fund:
„h The scholarship stipend is to be used by the graduate student to help
defray tuition and laboratory fees. A portion of the stipend may be
applied to registration fees to accredited scientific meetings related
to crystallography.
„h No more than one scholarship will be awarded to applicants at any one
accredited institution per year.
„h The funds of the scholarship are not to be used for travel.

A committee consisting of the ICDD Scholarship Committee Chairman, the
ICDD Chairman, the Chairman of the ICDD Education Subcommittee, the
ICDD Corporate Secretary and three individuals without conflict of
interest administer the awarding of the scholarships. One or more
accredited professors (with no conflicts of interest) may be invited to
assist in the selection of successful candidates.

Applications must be received by 31 October 2000. Fax transmittals
will be accepted until 31 October 2000, however a hard copy of the
application must be mailed and received by ICDD no later than 1
December 2000. E-mail applications are not acceptable. Please mail to:

This posting is to introduce readers to my web site
http://freespace.virgin.net/john.hewitt1/ "A Habit of Lies - How Scientists
Cheat."

The scientists in question include include some very senior figures. The
subject area is cell biology, particularly motility of eukaryotic cells.
This is a large field with implications for many areas of cell biology but
readers will realise that my work is not a proestablishment document.

Should readers know other newsgroups or media, which might have a suitable
audience, do please tell me about it.

I would very much welcome comments about the site itself, especially from
anyone
who could, with authority, challenge my assertions, but I will not be
routinely browsing this discussion group. If you post a response, please
copy your comments to me by E-mail, mentioning the group. That way, you
will be sure I will read it and can reply to you.

Sincerely Yours

On www.gms-biobox.de you can find live web-cam pictures of growing radish in
a hydroponic system. The trial has just started.
The plants are growing in a gastight plant growth chamber, which controls
the temperature, air humidity, light and also the concentrations of O2 and
CO2 in the atmosphere. The Biobox is also measuring the production and
consumption of O2 and CO2 by the plants and allows measurement of
photosynthesis and respiration.

Is there anyone here who knows enough about physics to be able to
usefully comment upon whether Emilio Del Giudice and Giuliano
Preparata's theory of coherent domains has much chance of being true,
and if it does, whether it can explain the phenomenon of the memory of
water studied by Jacques Benveniste?

This topic sound strangely similar to oscillon memory in a wavelet
interaction/interference system.
To understand how such a systemic memory can be established by paper

The theory of coherent domains is an attempt to rationalize the
semi-religious belief of homeopaths in the ability of water molecules to
retain an "imprint" of a molecule that was once present. This in turn is an
elaborate rationalization of their belief that water, once exposed to a
molecule, somehow carries the chemical effectiveness with regard to "healing
properties" that the molecule has, without the damaging side effects. This
in turn is an updated version of the ancient belief in "contact" magic - the
belief that contact with something that has magical powers can somehow lead
to a transfer of those powers. Look up the word "tabu" in the encyclopedia.

To get back to the "theory", it amounts to the assertion that water
molecules can respond to the presence of a solute molecule by forming a
"coherent domain" that somehow persists after the solute molecule is
removed, and that the "domain" is stabilized with respect to thermal motion
of the water molecules through some unspecified "phase-locking" mechanism.

The concept has no quantitative components (there is no prediction as to
what temperatures are required to maintain the "phase-locking mechanism, for
example), it has no credible empirical data to support it (a few years ago a
French homeopathic "researcher" made some claims that were carefully
investigated and found to result from biased selection of data, among other
causes, and could not be reproduced, even by other homeopathic researchers),
and does not propose a demonstrable mechanism for the asserted effects.

In short, it is not a truly scientific theory.

This is very strange. Carbon tetrachloride may have some of the properties
suggested for water.
When ink is mixed into it while spinning the ink will disperse. When the
spin is reversed the ink will come back together - an illustration of
systemic memory.

The angle of the position of electrons of water may allow such a
relationship suggested to exist.

I know of no evidence to support this model. Every electron in the universe
may be entangled with each other
which is similar to the suggested relationship for water. The problem is
how does the entanglement result in a local event and why would water have
those properties.

The closes match up with this is the fact that 98% of our bodies are water.
The particular quantum harmonic of electrons in water in the microtubules
of neurons may be 40 hertz if Jack Sarfatti's calculations are correct. 40
hertz is related to conscious thought in humans. I know of no reason to
suspect the ocean is conscious or is storing information.

The odd thing about this if you will change the word water to brass balls
and oscillate them with two low frequencies coherent domains called
oscillons would be observable. A hologram would be a phase locked
coherent domain.

Science means to know. Theory means a guess at what we know. While such a
proposal may have little support in the scientific community it does not
mean that it is wrong or true. Model are usefully only if we are willing to
consider the absurd.
