This message is being sent to test an updated email listing of the
Biophysical Society moderated newsgroup,
bionet.prof-society.biophysics.

We have recently merged the original newsgroup email list with an
updated membership email listing from the Biophysical Society office
to include as much of the membership as possible. The purpose of this
newsgroup is for broadcasting Biophysical Society announcements and
other Society related information. This is not a discussion newsgroup
and participation in this newsgroup will not result in your email box
being filled with excessive or non-Society related messages. Please
be patient as we try to expand this communication system to reach a
larger number of the members.

Thank you for your cooperation.

NIH grant forms (PHS 398) for Macintosh computers are now available
on the WWW.

These templates (MS-Word and MS-Excel) were created by Dr. John Livesey.
A Windows version should be forthcoming soon.

The URL for WWW access is:

The bionet.prof-society.biophysics newsgroup list is a large one.
There are presently 2504 addresses on this list at the California
site, after screening for bad addresses, and I don't have the present
figure for the UK site. Some email addresses are bound to change and
we would like to keep this list as current as possible. To facilitate
this process, there are instructions below for handling address
changes.

INFORMATION REGARDING ADDRESS CHANGES:

If you change your address, you may unsubscribe your old address and
resubscribe your new address automatically by sending the following
e-mail messages:

TO SUBSCRIBE AUTOMATICALLY:

To: biosci-server@net.bio.net
Subject: (leave this line blank)
Message: subscribe bphyssoc

TO UNSUBSCRIBE AUTOMATICALLY:

To: biosci-server@net.bio.net
Subject: (leave this line blank)
Message: unsubscribe bphyssoc

Your address will be extracted from the mail header and automatically added or
removed from the list. Cancelations will only work if the address on
the From: line of your mail message matches the address on the mailing list.

If you are unable to unsubscribe using the automated method, you may
contact the BIOSCI-HELP SERVICE to subscribe or unsubscribe. Your
request will be handled by a person. To use this service send the
following message:

Those participating in this newsgroup through the Daresbury site in
the UK, i.e., primarily European users, should contact
biosci@daresbury.ac.uk for details.

Dear Colleagues:

Together with Elaine Gallin and Charles Cantor, I will
be representing the Biophysical Society at the FASEB Consensus
Conference (Oct 30,31) on Federal Research Funding for Biomedical
Research and Related Life Sciences for FY97. The Consensus conference is
an effort to develop a common position for the 40,000+ FASEB members in
the budget battle. The conference operates through subcommittees
focusing in on federal funding agencies, and I'm on the DOE committee.
Biophysicists have a particular interest in the maintenance of the DOE
funded national laboratory facilities for structure analysis, data
gathering, interpretation and dissemination. There have been a variety
of proposals to downsize or dissassemble these facilities, including
irreplaceable resources such as Brookhaven or Argonne. If any of you
have cogent 1-3 paragraph arguments in support of DOE funded programs of
importance to the Biophysics community, I would appreciate receiving
them in the next two days (sorry about that). Or if you have a strong
position on facilities that can be downsized with minimal loss to the
research community.

My own position is that this is a period in which we should be
expanding the national laboratories which include a biomedical research
mission, by transferring funds from the enormous budgets of the nuclear
weapons labs. Unfortunately the political climate does not yet allow us
to critique the large military component of the DOE budget; we are
limited to scrambling for crumbs from the civilian portion. Hopefully
this will change in the next (FY98) round of the federal budget debate.

Jonathan King
