NEW BIOPHYSICAL SOCIETY DIRECTOR

Christine K. Carrico will become the Executive Director of the Biophysical
Society on Deceomber 15, 1996, to succeed Emily M. Gray. She brings to the
Society extensive experience in association management and governmental affairs,
as well as an understanding of the needs and concerns of biomedical researchers.
Until recently, Dr. Carrico was the Acting Executive Director and Director of
Scientific Affairs of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists in
Alexandria, Virginia. From 1979-1993 she was involved in extramural grants
administration at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) at
NIH. She was Director of the Pharmacological Sciences Program from 1884 to
1993. Dr. Carrico received her B.A. in Biology from Hollins College, her pH.D.
in Phrmacology at Yale University, and did postdoctoral research at Yale
University and the National Cancer Institute.

Emily Gray will become Consulting Executive Director on December 15 and will
retire in March, 1997 after 25 years with the Biophysical Society. The Society
and its Bethesda, Maryland office have grown markedly during Ms. Gray's tenure;
the Society's first employee (part-time), she now manages a staff of six. Her
dedicated and gracious attention to every member's needs played an important
role in the growth of the Society and have endeared Emily to the membership. We
are grateful for her devotion and friendship and wish her a retirement filled
with the pleasures of family, friends, and music.

Please come to the Annual Meeting in New Orleans to welcome Christie and wish
Emily a happy retirement. The traditional reception following the National
Lecture will be a special one: Emily's Party!

There has been recent interest in developing a listing of undergraduate programs
in biophysics that are presently available. This list would be useful to those
at institutions which are starting to develop new programs in biophysics at the
undergraduate level.

If your institution presently has an undergraduate biophysics program in place,
or is in the process of developing one, your experience would be helpful to
others trying to do the same.

Following are some suggestions for information that would be useful:

(i) contact information for the program, or URL if available
(ii) program description
(iii) syllabi for Biophysics courses, along with titles of useful textbooks
(iv) listing of recommended courses for a Biophysics major (curriculum)
(v) names, email addresses, and URLs (if available) of instructors

The Biophysical Society WWW server is available for posting any of the above
information.

Please send information regarding your program to:

Carol Gross at cgross@biosci.cbs.umn.edu
