PREPARING FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

To help inform policymakers and the public of the principal
conclusions from key studies of the Academy complex, the National
Research council (NRC) has issued a new series of reports entitled
Preparing for the 21st Century. These reports synthesize, summarize,
and highlight principal conclusions and recommendations from nearly
100 recent NRC studies.

The titles of these six reports are:
Science and Engineering Research in a Changing World
     The Education Imperative
     Technology and the Nation's Future
     Challenges Facing a Changing Society
Focusing on Quality in a Changing Health Care System
The Environment and the Human Future

In addition, the Presidents of the National Academy of Sciences,
National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine have
written a personal statement that provides their four highest
priorities for the country and the actions needed to address them.
These four action items are:
+ Education should be come the nation's number one priority.
+ The recent trend of disinvestment in science and engineering
research should be reversed.
+ Scientific and engineering research should be used more
effectively in decision making for public policy.
+ Reliable information on health care quality should be provided
to consumers.

The reports and the statement can be accessed via the World Wide Web
at http://www2.nas.edu/21st. An advantage of the online version is
that readers can link directly to the text of the Academy complex
studies that are referenced in the six reports.

To: Motility Subgroup:

I think we have an exciting session for you on Sunday, see your abstract
book for the program.

The business meeting is held midway through the session. You need to
elect the organizers for 1998. Chris Cremo and Jonathon Howard are next
years organizers. PLEASE SEND YOUR NOMINATIONS TO avs5u@elvis.med.edu
BEFORE THE MEETING. There will also be nominations from the floor.

Topics for the business mtg:

The meeting has become very long and expensive when you consider the cost
to a lab where students and postdoctoral fellows attend. I would like to
suggest that we fold our subgroup meeting into the main mtg either as a
morning or evening session. It would also be advantageous if the main
mtg started on the weekend to take advantage of the cheaper airfares and
that could be put up to a vote and if supportive could be communicated to
the Biophysics Council. We could start a discussion at this site and if
there is sufficient interest put it on the agenda.

Please submit other issues that you think should be on the agenda to my
e-mail address (avs5u@elvis.med.edu).

The Public Science Policy Symposium on Tuesday, March 4 at 11:00 am
in Room 37 of the Moriel Convention Center will feature
Maryanna Henkart, Deputy Director of NSF's Division of Molecular and
Cellular Biosciences. Dr. Henkart will address a variety of issues
of keen interest to biophysicists, including:

+ The general climate of competing budget priorities in which
science is operating and how this impacts on biophsyics as a
discipline

+ What NSF is doing to keep apace with changes in budget
priorities, information and other technologies, and science, in
general

+ Future funding opportunities for biophysicists and how they can
maximize those chances

This session is planned to be informal with plenty of opportunity for
questions. Please plan on attending.
