The booklet Careers in Biophysics, which has been much in demand by undergraduates curious about the substance and practice of our field, is now being updated. We want to include attractive graphics to illustrate some of the approaches, results, and instruments used in biophysical research. We also hope to profile the careers of a few biophysicists.
Please help us in this effort! If you have good graphics and/or an interesting story of how you got into your field of study, send them in. High-quality 8x10 hard copy for the former, a few brief paragraphs for the latter. Send these to the Biophysical Society Office, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814.

¯ Christopher Miller, Society President

Both to reduce the cost of publication in Biophysical Journal and to
enhance the appearance of the Journal, the Publications Committee and the
Officers of the Society have decided to alter Biophysical Journal policies
regarding the charges to authors for color illustrations. It has been the
practice for many years to charge all authors $400/figure/page for the color
illustrations that appear in their
Biophysical Journal papers. From July 1, 2000 forward, for papers
published by Biophysical Society members, there will be no charge for color
illustrations that the Editorial Board agrees materially enhance the
presentation of the science at issue. A paper will be considered as
published by a Biophysical Society member if its corresponding author is an
active member. In the event authors wish to have illustrations printed in
color that the Editorial Board feels could reasonably be printed in black
and white, they may insist this be done, but will be required to pay the
color charge for all such illustrations at the same rate as non-members.
This change in practices will significantly reduce the Journal's income and
may result in an increase in the amount it pays for color in the event the
usage of color grows. For that reason this policy will be reviewed from time
to time, and may have to be revised in the future. That said, we are hoping
the cost will prove sustainable, and that a significant improvement in the
Journal will result.

Peter Moore * Biophysical Journal Editor

Annual Meeting Summary

By all accounts this year's annual meeting was a resounding success. A record number of abstracts, 2881, were submitted; a record number of scientists, 4159, attended; the science was outstanding. On the following pages are summaries of committee meetings and activities that took place in New Orleans. Below are the major decisions made by Council when it met in February.
· In response to a recommendation from the Membership Committee, Council agreed to expand the lower cost membership rate currently offered only to postdocs. The rate name will be changed to Early Career Rate, thus allowing biophysicists working in industry or teaching to take advantage of the lower rate. Beginning in January 2001, the Early Career Rate will be available to all members for a period of four years after achievement of first professional degree.
· Council approved the Publications Committee recommendation to offer free color publication in Biophysical Journal as a benefit of membership.
· Council agreed to expand the Society's public policy efforts to address issues of specific concern to the Society, including increased funding for the underpinning sciences, increased funding for the DOE and NSF, concerns with the postdoctoral situation, and other policy issues as they arise. In order to build its own infrastructure and support the issues unique to biophysics, Council voted to reduce its support of the JSC advocacy/lobbying effort, realizing that there was redundancy with the efforts of FASEB, to which the Society contributes through its membership. Council also voted to bring back in-house management of its CLC database so that it can better communicate issues of interest to its membership and foster a stronger grassroots effort.
· David De Rosier was chosen to chair a Discussions meeting in 2001. The meeting will follow the format of previous Discussions and will be limited to approximately 150-200 attendees.
· Brian Salzberg and Joseph Falke were elected to the Executive Board for two-year terms, replacing Meredith Bond and Barbara Seaton, whose terms ended this year.
· Council approved the 2000 slate of candidates and elected members to the 2001 Nominating Committee: Avril Somlyo, Chair, Jeff Gelles, Fred Sigworth, and Watt Webb.
· Council established a Human Resources Committee, consisting of the chairs of the Education, CPOW, Minorities, and Membership Committees. The Committee will address issues of concern to the various sectors of the Society membership, including postdocs and graduate students. Jonathan King will chair the Committee.

NEURAL DYNAMICS SIMULATION & VISUALIZATION

a Scientific Visualization Laboratory Seminar
Wednesday April 26, 4-6pm
Rich Building Rm 242 (ITDC Classroom)

To register or for more information: markus.deshon@oit.gatech.edu

This seminar will use an in-house tool (NDT, the Nonlinear Dynamics
Toolbox)
to explore the dynamics of neurons. NDT generates time series data using
a numerical model, then allows analysis and 3D-visualization of that data
using multiple tools.

This seminar will be hands-on, allowing participants to use NDT directly
on
a laptop computer. Seating is limited, so please register by emailing
markus.deshon@oit.gatech.edu.
