Opportunities for Graduate Studies in Molecular Microbiology
McGill University, Macdonald Campus

We have recently obtained funding from the NSERC Strategic Projects program
to support studies of low temperature nodulation of soybean by
Bradyrhizobium japonicum. These studies will involve the use of reporter
genes in the isolation of nod gene altered-induction regulatory mutants,
assays of key metabolic enzymes within the nitrogen fixing bacteroid, and
investigations of bacteroid-specific transcription using differential
display reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (DDRT-PCR).

We wish to identify suitable interested individuals who wish to pursue
studies at the Ph.D. level. Ideal candidates will have a strong background
in microbiology, molecular biology and/or genetics. They will be able to
work independently, and interact positively within a diverse and dynamic
group of scientists in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences and
Department of Plant Science at Macdonald Campus of McGill University.
Enthusiasm for the exciting field of Plant-Microbe Interactions will be a
requirement.

Interested candidates should forward their curriculum vitae by e-mail to
"charles@nrs.mcgill.ca"

Hi John,
Below is an ad that I would like to post on the BIOSCI/bionet news group
and to the mailing list for members of the CSM. Please advise.

UNIVERSITY OF REGINA

The Department of Chemistry announces the availability of a Postdoctoral
position in BIOCHEMISTRY (subject to budgetary approval), commencing
between May 1 and August 1, 1998, to work in the research laboratory of
R.A. Kelln on the regulation of gene expression. A working knowledge of
recombinant DNA technology is required and familiarity with the molecular
genetics of microbial systems would be an asset.. The successful applicant
will have an opportunity to participate in the instructional functions of
the Department. Applications, including a complete curriculum vitae, an
outline of research goals and a summary of teaching experience should be
sent to

Dr. K.E. Johnson, Head
Department of Chemistry
University of Regina
Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, S4S 0A2

Candidates should also arrange to have three letters of reference sent to
the same address. Expressions of interest or inquiries for more details
may be sent by e-mail to kelln@cas.uregina.ca

The University of Minnesota, Morris seeks an individual who combines
broad intellectual interests with a strong commitment to excellence in
undergraduate education, to fill a tenure-track microbiology and
biochemistry position beginning September 14, 1998. The selected
candidate will teach a broad range of undergraduate biology courses
including introductory courses for both majors and non-majors and
courses for biology majors in microbiology, biochemistry, and another
area such as immunology, virology, or pathology. The selected
candidate will advise undergraduates. The selected candidate will
pursue a research program appropriate to an undergraduate liberal arts
campus of the University of Minnesota that could involve
undergraduates. The selected candidate will share in the governance
and development of the biology program as well as the campus at-large.

Candidates must expect to receive a Ph.D. in microbiology,
biochemistry, or a closely related field by September 14, 1998. Two
years experience teaching at the undergraduate level is required.
(Graduate TA experience is acceptable.)

The University of Minnesota, Morris is a small, selective,
residential, undergraduate liberal arts college of the University of

miles from Minneapolis, in a small rural community. The college is
organized into four academic divisions, of which Science and
Mathematics is one. Disciplines represented in the division are
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, and
Physics. The college attracts excellent students many of whom go on to
graduate or professional studies.

This tenure-track position carries all of the privileges and
responsibilities of University of Minnesota faculty appointments. A
sound retirement plan, excellent fringe benefits, and a small-town
