Melioidosis is a potentially fatal bacterial disease caused by an
environmental saprophyte: Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) pseudomallei. The
disease is endemic in the area between 20?N and 20?S of the equator and is
particularly prevalent in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. However,
sporadic cases have been reported from all over the world, especially in
those who have visited the endemic areas. It is for this reason that we
have set up the Melioidosis forum in the web site, www.melioidosis.org,
here in Thailand, where the majority of cases have been reported. All of
you are invited to share information regarding Melioidosis issues in your
country. You can send information, either pictorially or in text, to me
via e-mail (wasun@melioidosis.org)or ordinary mail (Wasun Chantratita,
Ph.D., Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital,
Mahidol University, Rama VI road, Bangkok 10400, Thailand.
Any information you submit will be entered quickly on the web site in the
melioidosis forum session under your name, and this contribution will be
very helpful and beneficial for the scientific community worldwide.

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION: YEAST/MOUSE GENETICS/CELL BIOLOGY
A three-year postdoctoral position is available immediately, funded by
research grants from the NIH and the Anaderm Research Corporation/Pfizer.
The successful candidate will join a research group studying
the biogenesis of the melanosome, the endolysosomally-related organelle in
which melanin is synthesized and deposited within the vertebrate eye and
skin. We are employing S. cerevisiae not only for use in the two-hybrid
system, in order to examine the interaction between melanosomal proteins
and other proteins including yeast and mammalian adaptor protein subunits,
but also are expressing melanosomal membrane proteins heterologously in
wild type and mutant yeast strains to study their trafficking and to
determine if they can suppress or cause synthetic lethality with known
yeast mutations in order to gain insight into their functions. This
approach combines the power of yeast and mouse coat color genetics to
address the function of mammalian gene products in which mutations cause
oculocutaneous albinism and in some cases multisystemic disorders. Our
laboratory is located within the Department of Cell Biology at the New York
University Medical Center in New York.

Applicants should have a Ph.D., with experience in genetics and molecular
biology. Expertise with protein subcellular localization
(immunofluorescence and/or biochemical fractionation) would be considered
an advantage, but is by no means essential. Salary rate is negotiable and
will be set according to experience. The position may be extended for an
additional two years, depending on the availability of funds.

If interested, please send a letter describing your research interest, a CV,
and the names and e-mail address/phone numbers of three references to:

Microbiologists to be held June 14-17, 1997 at the University of
Guelph, Guelph, Ontario is now available on the World Wide Web site
for the CSM <http://nrcbsa.bio.nrc.ca/~csm/Meeting98.html>. It
contains downloadable forms for registration, accommodation and
abstract submission, itineraries, general information, etc., etc.

I have also added a Web-based bulletin board system for members to use
to to announce or discuss CSM business, or advertise jobs, or swap
protocols. Feel free to use it
<http://nrcbsa.bio.nrc.ca/~csm/wwwboard>.

If you want to publish something on the CSM newsgroup/mailing list,
please use the appropriate newsgroup software (trn, tin, Netscape, IE,
etc) or mailing list facilities. That way, it will get to its
destination. Otherwise, it may get "filed".

The 3rd International Workshop on Molecular Epidemiology and
Evolutionary Genetics of Infectious Diseases, will be held at Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, June 7-10,1998, It is being organized under the
auspices of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz-FIOCRUZ, ORSTOM (the National
French Agency for scientific research in developing countries), CNRS
(the National French agency for basic research) and the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The goal of the workshop is the integration of laboratory science and
epidemiology, which will foster the use of genetic information for
studying evolution, emergence, reemergence, and dispersal of
microorganisms. The objectives of the workshop are to: 1) integrate
epidemiologic, molecular biologic, and evolutionary genetics approaches
in areas of diagnosis, strain typing, species identification,
pathogenesis, antigenic variation, drug and vaccine resistance, and host
and vector specificity; 2) foster interaction between epidemiologists
and laboratory scientists working on parasites, yeasts and fungi,
bacteria, and viruses; 3) Favor integrated approaches of the genetic
variability of the host, the pathogen and in the case of vector-borne
disases, the vector, in relation with the transmission and disease
manifestations of infectious diseases, and 4) provide health care
providers, public health professionals, epidemiologists and laboratory
scientists an opportunity to discuss the use of genetic tools and
methodologies needed to meet the challenges of diagnosis and management
of emerging, re-emerging, and endemic infectious diseases.

Submission of abstracts:
The potential significance of the observations, as well as the rigor
with which the scientific methods in the studies have been applied,
will influence which abstracts will be accepted.

Persons who submit abstracts should consider them official
communication of the meeting. If an abstract is accepted, the
author or authors are expected to attend the conference and
present their papers in person as scheduled.

Assignment to a poster or oral session is determined solely by the
subject matter and suitability to the mode of presentation
selected.

Abstracts should be no longer than 2500 words. Abstracts must be
received by March 10, 1998 and should be accompanied by the registration fee
Abstracts can be sent as an e-mail attachment or by diskette.
See the meeting web-site for a model format
