Could you please provide me with some knowledge on something i have 
found happening in some maize plants i have grown for an experiment 
at school. it seems as though out of the head of the maize plants 
where it gives pollen, it seems as though some threads of silk are 
also protruding from this head where it=A0sheds pollen and develops 
into a corn kernal like piece? if you could explain to me what is 
actually happening and and any other information of this process it 
would be much appreciated!

Dear Wade,

=46irst, I'm sorry about how your post appeared.  This sometimes
happens when one posts in html; despite my efforts to approve-post it
in plain text.  The folks who run the bionet newsgroup server are
working on this.

To answer your question.  There is a class of mutants in maize called
tassel-seed (e.g., see image of Ts6 at:
http://www.agron.missouri.edu/db_images/Variation/cd7099-3173-2501/53.jpg).
Another possibility, in some environments, some maize lines have a
tenancy for the tillers (side branches), but not the main stalk, to
produce mini cobs in their tassels.  These tassels would also produce silks
and eventually kernels.

The Missouri Maize Project has kindly provided 53 new SSR primers
and map locations to MaizeDB. In addition, they have supplied more
precise bin locations for some 193 previously mapped SSR. In 3 instances,
SSRs are now located differently than the original assignments:
   umc1256, previously 1.00-1.01     now 2.09
   umc1483, previously 1.01          now 8.01
   umc1817, previously 2.00-2.02     now bin 8.0

Noteworthy Comment: of the 816 public SSR mined from sequences in GenBank, 590
are from cDNAs, and of these, 532 were generated by the Stanford EST
project.

Demekech Gera. I am MSc student in applied Genetics in the above
mentioned university on a research project reading: Molecular and
Clasical Genetic Analysis of Cytoplasm Types and Restorer Genes in Chive

I am starting to try to dissect cell death pathways in maize and find 
my Mutator populations are way too heterogeneous.  Does anyone 
have a Mutator population that has a backcross or two to an inbred 
line?  B73 would be preferable, but I could probably use others.  If 
someone has something like this and could spare a bit of material 
so that I could start to amplify it up this summer, I would greatly 
appreciate it.

in barley of the Ds system for the delivery of genes (Koprek et al., 2000,

genes will be generated, crossed, characterized at the molecular level and

transformation of monocot species, and the biochemical and molecular

this mentioned as a hybrid parent and a breeding line and cannot find
any information on the line. Also, Mo17HI, obviously a version of

A two years post-doctoral position will be available in the Laboratory of
Carbon Metabolism at CEA-Cadarache to develop the large scale analysis of
mRNA translation state in Arabidopsis thaliana (Zong  et al, Messenger RNA
translation state: the second dimension of high-throughput expression
screening. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1999 Sep 14;96(19):10632-6). This
methodology will be applied to characterize the effect of physiological
stimuli on translation and mutants affected in genes involved in
translational control. This project is part of a collaboration with a
biotechnology company providing tools for high-throughput gene expression
analysis.

A strong background in biochemistry and cell biology would be appreciated.
The expected starting date will be mid-2001. CEA-Cadarache offers all
facilities for state of the art research in plant biology including confocal
microscopy, DNA sequencing, growth chambers for Arabidopsis work etc and is
located in a pleasant area of the south of France, about 30km north of
Aix-en-Provence.
