I am revising for my finals on Methods for studying proteins and DNA. I need
some references for mass spectroscopy, NMR, X-ray crystallography and Edman
methods. Principally, i need to know each of the methods' principles, teh
advantages/disadvanages, limitations.

if anyone knows any good reviews on the above methods, can they please send an
email to me and inform me please.

POST DOCTORAL POSITION
in Canberra, Australia with Andrew Torda.

Each year, the Research School of Chemistry at the
Australian National University has a series of post-doctoral
fellowships awarded on a competitive basis. Applications for
the current round will be taken until about June 30, 1998.
Starting dates are negotiable.

There are positions in several groups. This ad mainly
describes my group.

The research group of Andrew Torda is oriented towards
biomolecular calculation and simulation. We are working in
areas such as low-resolution (protein fold recognition) force
fields, refinement of experimental structures using MD
simulation, mixing knowledge-based force fields and
experimental data. Have a look at http://www.rsc.anu.edu.au/~torda

All the projects in the group involve coding - not just
applications. It would be an advantage to have a reasonable
knowledge of data structures and algorithms and programming
experience in a civilized language (not fortran).

Currently, possible projects would be centred around some new
algorithms for aligning amino acid sequences to structures,
based on the force fields we have developed. We are also
looking at protein fold classification using topological and
graph theory methods.
Projects are negotiable.

Salary: $42 201 - $45 159 per annum. Grants are provided
towards travel and removal. Positions are initially for two
years with a possible extension to a third year. There is a
housing office to help find accommodation.

The Research School of Chemistry is part of the Institute of
Advanced Studies which runs special research schools, in
parallel to the normal teaching schools, and without any
undergraduate teaching duties. The university is in the centre
of Canberra (the nation's capital).

Given the research orientation of the school, there is a
lively academic environment. We have close contacts with the
school's other theoretical groups in statistical mechanics,
quantum chemistry and chemical physics. From the point of view
of experimental groups, we maintain close ties to the school's
NMR, X-ray crystallography and molecular biology groups.

The official advertisement is at
 http://rsc.anu.edu.au/RSC/AcademicPositions/PDFadvert.html
This contains instructions for how to apply.
Although it is a good idea to establish some contact by email,
the forms ultimately have to be printed out and sent here by
slow mail.

Hi,

Originally the CCP11 project was set up to discuss the role of
bioinformatics in the scientific community and to establish a community
within bioinformatic groups throughout the UK. As a CCP project one of
its roles is a newsletter to increase the discusion within the
bioinformatics community and to keep people in touch.

The newsletter is published quaterly as an electronic document and is
available over the internet as a WWW document. The areas covered in each
newlettter are decided by which articles are sent to me to be published.
It is hoped the articles will then lead to further discussions on the
CCP11 bulletin board.

This will be our fifth publication of the CCP11 newsletter. The previous
editions of the newsletter can be found at:

http://www.dl.ac.uk/CCP/CCP11/newsletter/index.html

If you would like to contribute to our next publication please send your
article as an electronic document to me (email address at bottom). As
the newsletter will be published on the internet your article should be
sent in a html format. This will allow you to add your own formatting
and any hyperlinks to other documents.

The closing date for articles is the 26 June 1998.

Mark.

hi,
is there anything like CHIME plug-in (2D/3D molecule display)
that runs on DEC alphas ? it's kind if hard to set up a page rendered
with it while sitting in front of an alpha box.... MDM (the authors
of the plug-in) do not plan to port this thing... sigh...

Bonn: The Charming Federal City on the Rhine=20
Each year, Bonn welcomes more than two million visitors. There are many ways
of reaching this city. One of those is along the Rhine which is the most
=84European=93 of all rivers. On its way from the Alps to the North Sea, it
flows for 18 kilometers within the boundaries of Bonn accompanied by a
wealth of famous sights: castles and ruined fortresses, the romantic
Rolandsbogen - the last remaining window arch of a former castle, the
Siebengebirge hills, the Federal Government building, the Bonn Opera House
and the Beethoven Hall. Even as the German capital, Bonn retained the
characteristics that make it what it is today: a medium-sized Rhineland city
offering maximum quality of life to those living there and located in one of
the loveliest, most romantic regions in Germany. A lot of famous composers
found their inspiration in this lovely city, where Ludwig van Beethoven was
born and has left his mark.

Cologne could be on your list of visits: nowadays, it is the biggest city of
the state North-Rhine-Westfalia but already of great importance since the
ancient time of the Roman Empire. Cologne is famous for its well-known
romanic churches (12) and the gothic cathedral (UNESCO cultural heritage),
the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, the Romano-Germanic archeological museum and
many more galleries.

D=FCsseldorf one of Germanies fashion cities, often called =84little=
 Paris=93, is
about 1 hour away from Bonn. It is the state capital of North-Rhine
Westphalia and administrative headquaters for most of Germanies heavy
industry companies. D=FCsseldorf=92s down-town area =84Altstadt=93 and the=
 shopping
district =84K=F6nigsallee=93 are world famous. In addition, D=FCsseldorf=92s=
 second
nickname =84little Tokyo=93, points to the fact that the city houses=
 Europe=92s
largest Japanese colony in Germany.

Amsterdam is not far away: it is the famous European North Venice, whose
canals in the old city center, the Rijksmuseum and the van Gogh Museum
challenge to make an exciting round trip. =20

Brussels the Belgian capital and administrative headquarters of the European
Union is about 2,5 hours away from Bonn. Famous for its collection of unique
houses from the decorated style and renaissance periods. Brussels today is
also famous for its restaurants in all styles found adjacent to =84la=
 Grande
Place=93 - =84Bonne app=E9tit=93.=20

Paris about 4 hours away by train - is always worth a trip. Needless to
mention its classical attractions like the Eiffel tower, Notre Dame and the
Champs-Elyse=E9s. Le Louvre and the Mus=E9e d=92Orsay are the most famous=
 examples
out of dozens of exceptional museums. Above all, Paris is a unique
expression of =84 joie de vivre=93.=20

The 6th International Congress on Amino Acids will be sponsored by:

Salzburg , Austria.
