Subject: BIOSCI/bionet miniFAQ & Fundraiser

(LAST REVISION: 30-JUL-95)

This BIOSCI "miniFAQ" is designed to answer the questions that come up
the *most frequently*. The main BIOSCI FAQ (Frequently Asked
Questions) is accessible on the World Wide Web at URL
http://www.bio.net/.

If you can not find an answer to your question in this or other
documentation, the BIOSCI technical support staff answers e-mail
queries sent to

		       biosci-help@net.bio.net

We can only answer questions about the use of the newsgroups and
mailing lists. We unfortunately do not have the staff to do Internet
information searches or answer scientific questions. Please post
those to the appropriate BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups.

0) BIOSCI NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!!
------------------------------
BIOSCI's government funding has been expended, and we are now
operating solely from advertising revenue that we have raised from our
Web site at http://www.bio.net/. We need just a few minutes of your
time to help us serve you.

You can do two important things which will take very little time for
you individually and will immensely help us continue to help you.

First, please use our WWW system at http://www.bio.net/ to access the
archives. You can post or reply to messages via your Web browser as
described in item #1 below. Your usage helps attract sponsors. If you
contact any of our sponsors, please be sure to thank them for
supporting BIOSCI. It is critical for them to get this feedback if
they are to continue their sponsorship for the long term.

Second, if you work for a company or organization that provides
products or services of interest to the biology community, please pass
this message on to your marketing or marketing communications
department or other appropriate group. Please ask them to help
support BIOSCI by sponsoring our Web site and explain the uses and
benefits of the system to the biology community. If they are
interested, they can then contact us for further information at our
tech support address, biosci-help@net.bio.net.

1) Using the WWW to access the BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups.
--------------------------------------------------------
As of 10 December 1995, all BIOSCI/bionet full newsgroups are
accessible through the World Wide Web (WWW) at URL http://www.bio.net.
One can read and reply publicly or privately to both recent postings
and archived messages through one's Web browser if it is configured
properly to send e-mail. Each newsgroup is equipped with its own WAIS
index. The main BIOSCI home page also has access to the BIO-JOURNALS
Table of Contents database WAIS index and the BIOSCI user address
database described in another item further below.

2) What to do about "spams," i.e., junk mail, ads, etc.
-------------------------------------------------------
BIOSCI is a set of parallel USENET newsgroups (the "bionet" groups),
mailing lists, and a hypermail archive at URL http://www.bio.net/.
The same postings are distributed on all media (except for a small
number of mailing-list-only groups at net.bio.net). Unfortunately it
is becoming a despicable practice on the Internet (by a few people out
to make a fast buck) to do automated mass postings to thousands of
newsgroups and mailing lists. These attempts to grab free advertising
are refered to as "spams" in the usual, somewhat boneheaded, net
terminology. USENET is more susceptible to this practice, and many
spams originate on the USENET groups and then are passed on to the
mailing lists. However, spammers also get lists of mailing addresses
and hit these too, so neither medium is immune.

What should you do personally if you get junk mail?
---------------------------------------------------
Just delete it and move on without reading it further. Filing a
protest is becoming increasingly useless because spammers are often
disguising the addresses where the messages are sent from. Unless you
really understand Internet mail systems, your attempt at protest by
sending replies to the message will often end up being sent to the
address of an innocent person that the spammer is victimizing.

What can BIOSCI/bionet do to protect its newsgroups?
----------------------------------------------------
The only solution currently available is to moderate the newsgroup.
If this newsgroup is already moderated, then you are in good shape.
Moderation protects the USENET distribution from about 95% of the
spams that are being sent to date and protects the mailing lists
completely. Moderation means, however, that someone has to take the
time to review each message before it goes out. We have set up
software here that simply allows the moderator to forward to an
address at net.bio.net messages that (s)he wishes to have distributed.
This takes no more time than that needed to read the message and pass
it on, say about 1 min. per message.

Most newsgroups currently have a discussion leader who is responsible
for their newsgroup. The discussions leaders and their e-mail
addresses are listed in the BIOSCI Information Sheet which is
available on the Web at http://www.bio.net/. If a newsgroup is being
hit with too many junk postings, please contact the discussion leader
for that group and see if there is interest in moderating the group.
Please do not assume that by simply posting a complaint to the
newsgroup itself, anyone on the BIOSCI staff will act on your
complaint. With close to 100 newsgroups to run, the BIOSCI staff has
to rely on the discussion leaders of each newsgroup to report problems
directly to us at biosci-help@net.bio.net.

We will moderate any of our newsgroups if the discussion leader tells
us that the readership of the group wishes to do so and if a moderator
is willing to do the work. For most BIOSCI/bionet groups, this
entails only a few minutes of work each day.

Moderating a newsgroup will resolve probably 95% of the junk postings
on the USENET distribution. Unfortunately there are easy ways for
determined spammers to override the moderation mechanism on USENET,
but we can protect our e-mail subscribers from unwanted postings if
the newsgroup is moderated. You can also access our newsgroups over
the WWW at URL http://www.bio.net. While this Web interface will not
stop spammers from trying to post to the groups, this will give you
yet another way, besides using USENET news, to keep the junk out of
your personal mail files. For those of you with local USENET news
systems, the Web interface will also give you faster access to new
newsgroups and recent postings.

3) Examples of subscribing and unsubscribing to the mailing lists.
------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE NOTE: The BIOSCI management does NOT act on
subscription/unsubscription requests that are posted improperly to the
newsgroups and mailing lists. People who do this only bother everyone
on the lists to no avail. Please be sure to follow the proper
procedures below.

Gory details are in the BIOSCI Information sheets on the Web at
http://www.bio.net. Below we give an example utilizing the
METHODS-AND-REAGENTS list at both of our two BIOSCI sites:

Users in the Americas and Pacific Rim countries who use the BIOSCI
------------------------------------------------------------------
node at computer net.bio.net:
----------------------------

A) Determine the "listname" which is the <=8 character mail address
                                         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
for the group. These can be found in the BIOSCI Info. Sheet. For
the METHODS-AND-REAGENTS group the mailing address is
methods@net.bio.net. The listname is the portion of the address to
the left of the @ sign, i.e., "methods". The listname is used with
the "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" commands illustrated below.

B) Mail all commands in the body of a mail message addressed to
biosci-server@net.bio.net. Do NOT send commands to the newsgroup
posting addresses! Leave the Subject: line blank, any text on it
   will be ignored.

C) In the body of your message put one or more of the following
commands with an "end" command on the last line, e.g.,

   subscribe methods
   unsubscribe methods
   end

Do NOT put your e-mail address or other text on these lines. The
server only allows you to cancel your subscription if the address
on your mail header matches the address on our mailing list.
Please ask for help at biosci-help@net.bio.net if your address has
changed, e.g., if you know you are on the list but the server tells
you that you are not a member.

Users in Europe, Africa, and Central Asia who use the BIOSCI node at
--------------------------------------------------------------------
computer daresbury.ac.uk (also known as dl.ac.uk):
-------------------------------------------------

To subscribe and unsubscribe to/from the BIOSCI lists, you need to
specify the full USENET newsgroup name with "bionet-news." prepended.
The USENET newsgroup names are listed in the BIOSCI Information sheet
on the Web at http://www.bio.net/. For the METHODS-AND-REAGENTS list
the USENET newsgroup name is bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts, thus the
appropriate commands are

    sub bionet-news.bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts

    unsub bionet-news.bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts

These commands are included in a message addressed to mxt@dl.ac.uk,
NOT to the newsgroup mailing addresses. As usual, include the text in
the body of the message as text on the Subject: line is ignored.

To unsubscribe from all the lists at the UK node, use

    unsub bionet-news

Please note that if the address in the list is different than the one
in your mail message header, you will not be able to unsubscribe by
this method. If you have problems, please mail biosci@daresbury.ac.uk.

4) The BIOSCI user address and research interest directory.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please take this opportunity to add your name, address, and research
interest information to the BIOSCI User Address Database if you have
not already done so.

You can fill out the address form directly through our Web page at URL
http://www.bio.net/adrform.html.

The address database is reindexed nightly for WWW access (the URL is
http://www.bio.net/). If you are not directly on the Internet but can
reach it by e-mail, please use our waismail server to access the user
directory. waismail use is described above. You can also request a
user address form by e-mail from biosci-help@net.bio.net.

Please check your database entry from time-to-time to see if your
address information is still up-to-date. Because of our limited
personnel resources, we ask that you resubmit a *complete* form to
revise your entry; we only replace complete entries and do not have
resources to edit old forms.

PRESS RELEASE

Florida Biotech Companies Fill DNA Technology Gap with New Diagnostic
Technologies

Alachua, Florida, Jan. 7, /PRNewswire/ -- AGENDA, Inc. and CyGene, Inc.,
two Florida based biotech companies, have signed a co-licensing
agreement to market their next-generation DNA diagnostic technologies.
Under the terms of the agreement, AGENDA will market CyGene's patent
pending TPA (TM) technology exclusively, and in conjunction with its own
RFTA (TM) technology.

1997 was an exceptional year for DNA discoveries. Important genetic
sequences, some responsible for diseases such as Alzheimer's, Rheumatoid
Arthritis, Cancers, Heart Disease, etc. were recognized. These were
added to the huge arsenal of already recognized genetic sequences like
HIV, Hepatitis C and numerous contagious or hereditary diseases. One
critical tool missing, which would add to the value of these
discoveries, is a technology that will quickly, reliably and
economically recognize these specific genes when only a few copies are
present.

AGENDA's RFTA (TM) (patent pending) technology complements TPA (TM) in
that both will detect any known genetic sequence while using different
methods. These technologies make early reliable diagnosis of HIV,
Hepatitis C, cancer, parasitic, viral, bacterial and hereditary diseases
a reality. Both processes can be automated, to provide fast and
unprecedented first and second opinions regarding the presence or
absence of the targeted genes. The ability of these technologies to
handle large quantities of DNA or RNA set them apart from other
techniques, which are prone to false results.

For the first time, very early disease recognition (before the onset of
clinical symptoms) is made possible by these next-generation DNA
diagnostic technologies. This will open the door to entirely new
approaches to disease prevention, management and cure. Early stage
diagnosis will make cure scenarios a reality, for many terminal
diseases. First generation DNA technology can only reliably detect HIV,
6-7 months post infection. TPA/RFTA (TM) will be able to detect HIV
accurately shortly after the time of infection.

Similar to computer operating systems, RFTA (TM) and TPA (TM) represent
a technology base from which applications can be developed for
agricultural, veterinary, health sciences, and human diagnostics. Based
on proven molecular biology principles, both technologies can be
configured to complete automation and may be performed in tandem using a
single sample. AGENDA is actively seeking licensees and companies
involved in the design and production of biotech automation equipment.
This is the first public announcement of the existence of TPA (TM) and
RFTA (TM).

is honest, lawful, extremely profitable, and is a way to get a large

amount of money in a short time. I was approached several times before

I checked this out. I joined just to see what one could expect in

return for the minimal effort and money required. Initially I let no

one in the organization know that I was an attorney and, to my

2. IMPORTANT--DO NOT alter the names, or their sequence other than

instructed in this program! Or you will not profit the way you

    should.

Replace the name and address under REPORT #1 with yours, moving

the one that was there down to REPORT #2. Move the name and

address under REPORT #2 to REPORT #3. Move the name and address

under REPORT #3 to REPORT #4. The name and address that was under

REPORT #4 is dropped off the list and is NO DOUBT on the way to

    the bank.

When doing this, please make certain you copy everyone's name and

address ACCURATELY!!! Also, DO NOT move the Report/Product

    positions!

3. Take this entire program text, including the corrected names list,

and save it on your computer.

4. Now you're ready to start a massive advertising campaign on the

WORLDWIDE WEB! Advertising on the WEB is very, very inexpensive,

but there are HUNDREDS of FREE places to advertise also. Another

avenue which you could use is e-mail mailing lists. You can buy

these lists for under $20/1,000 addresses. START YOUR AD CAMPAIGN

    AS SOON AS YOU CAN.

ALWAYS PROVIDE SAME-DAY SERVICE ON ALL ORDERS!!!

HERE'S HOW THIS AMAZING PLAN WILL MAKE YOU $MONEY$

Let's say you decide to start small just to see how it goes. Assume

your goal is to get 10 people to participate on your first level.

(Placing a lot of FREE ads on the internet could EASILY get a better

response.) Also assume that everyone else in YOUR BUILDING
ORGANIZATION

gets ONLY 10 downline members. Follow this example for the STAGGERING

results below.

1st level -- your 10 members with $5 ($5 x 10) $50

2nd level --10 members from those 10 ($5 x 100) $500

3rd level -- 10 members from those 100 ($5 x 1,000) $5,000

4th level -- 10 members from those 1,000 ($5 x 10,000) $50,000

                                 THIS TOTALS----------->       $55,550

Remember friends, this is assuming that the people who participate

only recruit 10 people each. Dare to think for a moment what would

happen if everyone got 20 people to participate! Some people get

100's of recruits! THINK ABOUT IT!

By the way, your cost to participate in this is practically nothing.

You obviously already have an internet connection and e-mail is FREE!!!

REPORT #3 will show you the best methods for bulk e-mailing and

purchasing e-mail lists.

REMEMBER: Approx. 50,000 new people get on-line monthly!

ORDER YOUR REPORTS NOW!!!

*******TIPS FOR SUCCESS*******

TREAT THIS AS YOUR BUSINESS! Send for the four reports IMMEDIATELY,

so you will have them when the orders start coming in because:

When you receive a $5 order, you MUST send out the requested product/

report to comply with the U.S. Postal & Lottery Laws, Title 18,

Sections 1302 and 1341 or Title 18, Section 3005 in the U.S. Code,

also Code of Federal Regs. vol. 16, Sections 255 and 436, which

state that "a product or service must be exchanged for money received."

* ALWAYS PROVIDE SAME-DAY SERVICE ON THE ORDERS YOU RECEIVE.

* Be patient and persistent with this program. If you follow the

instructions exactly the results WILL undoubtedly be SUCCESS!

* ABOVE ALL, HAVE FAITH IN YOURSELF THAT YOU CAN SUCCEED!

*******YOUR SUCCESS GUIDELINE*******

The check point that guarantees your success is simply this:

You MUST receive 10 to 20 orders for REPORT #1! THIS IS A MUST! If

you don't within two weeks, advertise more and send out more programs

until you do. Then, a couple of weeks later you should receive at

least 100 orders for REPORT #2. If you don't, advertise more and send

out more programs until you do. Once you have received 100, or more

orders for REPORT #2, YOU CAN RELAX, because you will be on your way

to the BANK! -OR- You can DOUBLE your efforts!

REMEMBER: Every time your name is moved down on the list you are in

front of a DIFFERENT report, so you can KEEP TRACK of your PROGRESS

by what report people are ordering from you. IT'S THAT EASY!!!

NOTE: IF YOU NEED HELP with starting a business, registering a
business

name, how income tax is handled, etc., contact your local office of the

Small Business Administration (a Federal agency) for free help and

answers to questions. Also, the Internal Revenue Service offers free

help via telephone and free seminars about business taxes.

         ******* T E S T I M O N I A L S *******

This program does work, but you must follow it EXACTLY! Especially the

rule of not trying to place your name in a different position, it won't

work, you'll lose a lot of money. I'm living proof that it works. It

really is a great opportunity to make relatively easy money, with
little

cost to you. If you do choose to participate, follow the program

exactly, and you'll be on your way to financial security. If you are a

fellow Christian and are in financial trouble like I was, consider this

a sign. I DID!

Good Luck & God Bless You,

                                   Sincerely, Chris Johnson

P.S. Do you have any idea what 11,700 $5 bills ($58,500) looks

like piled up on the kitchen table?...IT'S AWESOME!

My name is Frank. My wife Doris and I live in Bel-Air, MD.

I am a cost accountant with a major U.S. Corporation and I make

pretty good money. When I received the program I grumbled to Doris

about receiving "junk mail"! I made fun of the whole thing, spouting

my knowledge of the population and percentages involved. I "knew" it

wouldn't work. Doris totally ignored my supposed intelligence and

jumped in with both feet. I made merciless fun of her, and was ready

to lay the old "I told you so" on her when the thing didn't work...

well, the laugh was on me! Within two weeks she had received over 50

responses. Within 45 days she had received over $147,200 in $5 bills!

I was stunned. I was sure that I had it all figured and that it

wouldn't work...I AM a believer now. I have joined Doris in her

"little" hobby. I did have seven more years until retirement, but I

think of the "rat race" and it's not for me...We owe it all to MLM.

                                   Frank T., Bel-Air, MD

I just want to pass along my best wishes and encouragement to you.

Any doubts you have will vanish when your first orders come in. I even

checked with the U.S. Post Office to verify that the plan was legal.

It definitely is! IT WORKS!!!

                                   Paul Johnson, Raleigh, NC

This is the only realistic money-making offer I've ever received. I

participated because this plan truly makes sense. I was surprised

when the $5.00 bills started filling my mail box. By the time it
tapered

off I had received over 8,000 orders with over $40,000 in cash. Dozens

of people have sent warm personal notes too, sharing the news of their

good fortunes! It's been WONDERFUL.

                                   Carl Winslow Tulsa, OK

The main reason for this letter is to convince you that this system is

honest, lawful, extremely profitable, and is a way to get a large
amount

of money in a short time. I was approached several times before I

hecked this out. I joined just to see what one could expect in return

for the minimal effort and money required. Initially I let no one in

the organization know that I was an attorney and, to my astonishment, I

received $36,470.00 in the first 14 weeks, with money still coming in.

                                 Sincerely yours, Phillip A. Brown

This plan works like GANG-BUSTERS!! So far I have had 9,735 total
orders

OVER $48,000!!! I hope I have sparked your own excitement, if you

follow the program exactly, you could have the same success I have, if

not better. Your success is right around the corner, but you must do a

little work.

                                   Good Luck! G. Bank

Not being the gambling type, it took me several weeks to make

up my mind to participate in this plan. But conservative that I am

I decided that the initial investment was so little that there was

just no way that I wouldn't get enough orders to at least get my money

back. Boy I was surprised when I found my medium-size post office box

crammed with orders. After that it got so over-loaded that I had to

start picking up my mail at the window. I'll make more money this

year than any 10 years of my life before. The nice thing about this

deal is that it doesn't matter where in the U.S. the people live.

There simply isn't a better investment with a faster return.

                                 Mary Rockland, Lansing, MI

I had received this program before. I deleted it, but later

I wondered if I shouldn't have given it a try. Of course, I had no

idea who to contact to get another copy, so I had to wait until I

was e-mailed another program...11 months passed then it came...I

didn't delete this one!...I made $41,000 on the first try!!

                                   D. Wilburn, Muncie, IN

This is my third time to participate in this plan. We have

quit our jobs, and quite soon we will buy a home on the beach and live

off the interest on our money. The only way on earth that this plan

will work for you is if you do it. For your sake, and for your
family's

sake don't pass up this golden opportunity. Remember, when you order

your four reports, SEND CASH. Checks have to clear the bank and create

too many delays. Good luck and happy spending!

                                   Charles Fairchild, Spokane, WA

Typically when I look at a money-making deal I want to

know if the company is strong, will it be here when it's time for

my big pay off. In this crazy thing there is no company intervention

for management to blow it. Just people like me ordering directly

from the source! Interesting...I had a couple of projects I'd been

trying to fund to no avail so I thought; Why not give it a try? Well

2 1/2 weeks later the orders started coming in. One project is funded

and I'm sure the other will be soon!

Dear Colleagues,
I would appreciate receiving some comments or suggestions on how to do PCR
for the region of terminal hairpin structure of virus. This virus contain
single-stranded DNA and has palindromic hairpin structure at both terminal
end which is unique structure of virus in Family of Parvovirus. Could
anyone has experienced to do PCR at that regions. Please tell the protocal
or procedure to approach this problem.

Dear Dr. Pattanakitsakul

I don't know exactly what problem these hairpins are causing you,
but adding a dsDNA destabilizing additive (like DMSO, glycerol,
or betaine) to your PCR buffer might help.
Here are two references, specifically concerning DNA hairpins:
Q Chou: Minimizing deletion artifacts during Taq polymerase PCR
by E. coli SSB.
Nucleic Acids Research (1992) 20: 4371
W-H Chen, B Hohn: DMSO improves PCR amplification of DNA with
complex secondary structure.

Dear Dr.Weissensteiner,
Thank you your response. I have tried to use the addiitive that you
mentiones but it is not work well. The problem that I raised to the net
user is how to do PCR size 700 bp spanning from the long terminal
palindromic hairpin end (about 150 bp). The results of PCR that show
small size and appeared some missing sequence in the middle part of PCR
products. Could you suggest me any experiments to solve this problem.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Dr. Pattanakitsakul

The only way I can see is to try a number of different additives a
various concentrations. It may be also necessary to adjust the MgCl2
concentration separately for each of the additives. In short: a lot
of titration experiments!
If you tell me what you have already done, I may be able to suggest
some further experiments.

HUGO MUTATION DATABASE INITIATIVE
NEWSLETTER NO. 2, JANUARY, 1998

1.	The 4th International Mutation Database Meeting was held in Baltimore in
October 1997.
There were 67 registrants and the meeting was very successful. The meeting
program is
available online on the website (see below). The attendees and abstracts
will be available on
the website soon.

2.	For those who have not heard, there is a small HUGO Mutation Database
meeting in Turin,
Italy starting 3pm on March 27th 1998, adjoined to the Human Genome Meeting
(HGM'98)
28-30 March 1998. This is mainly to present reports from the working groups
and to elicit
discussion. Those interested in attending should contact R. Horaitis.
(horaitis@ariel.ucs.unimelb.edu.au)

3.	An article entitled "Recommendations for a Nomenclature System for Human
Gene
Mutations" by S. Antonarakis and the contributions of the Nomenclature
Working Group and
wider community (in total 31 names) has just been published. Human Mutation
Vol.11 #1
p1-3. This Human Mutation journal article will soon be available on-line
through the
publisher's Internet service Wiley InterScience. You may access Wiley
InterScience through a
link on the home page of the Human Mutation Web Site at
"http://journals.wiley.com/humanmutation/" or by going directly to the Wiley
InterScience
site at http://www.interscience.wiley.com/." We are encouraging all locus
specific databases
to conform to these standards.

4.	Charles Scriver, Piotr Nowacki and other members of the Content and
Software Working
Group, are currently preparing a Guidelines document describing how to set
up in detail a
locus specific database. This will be circulated and or posted for more
general comment.

5.	The campaign to encourage locus-specific databases has begun. Sixty-seven
potential
curators have been contacted so far, and we have had a positive response
from twenty-seven.
If you are interested in creating a database and curating for your gene of
interest, and have
not already indicated this to us, please contact us for further information.

6.	Dr Matthias Wjst recently announced a new database for asthma and allergy
linkages and
mutations. This is available at "http://cooke.gsf.de". He is willing to
share details and
software with others wishing to set up a common disease/linkage database.
For further details
contact Dr Wjst (wjst@gsf.de).

Finally, our initiative's community has now been finalised at ~350 and is
growing. All
communications with members have been documented and the interests and
expertise of each
member has been listed. Please advise us of any others you may think will be
interested.

Dear Curator:

Somehow I continue to always be blind copied on these "subscribe"
notices...please check and correct. Thanks.
