By all means, go for it. I too would be interested in software to assist
mycologists.

My site just notified me of this group and I am really excited by it!
I've been studying fungi as a hobby for about 20 years now and am
involved in several NAMA affiliated groups as well as NAMA itself.
I'm a computer scientist and I've been working on some ideas for using
computers in various ways to assist mycologists and would like to
discuss such issues with other interested parties. Is this an
appropriate forum for that?

Certainly sounds like it to me, though I'm not a mycologist. Will discussions
of practical mycology be welcome here, as for example tips on growing
morchella esculenta?

Nathan,

No problem and no blame. The reason we say `Group not available' is
that we have to accommodate people who, through no fault of their own,
have no NEWS connection. Unless we set up the NEWS->email &
email->NEWS feeds [and, incidentally, send test messages to ensure all
is working properly] your potential audience is not as great as it
could be. Another reason is that we prefer a charter to be posted so
that no posting such as "I have bad athlete's foot, what powder do you
recommend?" is accepted as desirable. Things seem technically OK at
the moment but, if you prefer a wide audience, please hold on until
you see the `official' announcement.

This may be a beginner's question, but what is a good way to go
collecting slime molds in the suburbs? How can I get slime molds
spores without collecting other gunk? When should I go collecting?

Apparently I jumped the gun a little and posted before all the kinks
have been worked out in this news group. I have a couple of
descriptions of the mycology related computer work I've done so far
that I will post as soon as I hear that the group has been properly
set up. Anyone who wants a sneak preview can send me mail and I'll
send them the articles early.
