Do you say this b/c you see tiny flies buzzing about? This also might
be an indicator that you're watering it too much. I had started out
watering it alot and noticed alot of little flies around both of my
asparagus ferns. They had actually layed eggs in the dirt. I let it
dry out a little more between watering and they went away. And I guess
it's a good thing or mine would have rotted. If you haven't done it
already, cut the hollow roots off. Root rot spreads. If they're all
hollow, you've got real trouble. Also, since they grow so rapidly,
don't forget to feed. And reduce watering in winter. Maybe you should
try a clay pot also. They breathe better.

Cacti are really easy to care for. Water regularly in the summer. Use
tepid water and allow the soil to dry out a little between waterings.
Reduce watering in autumn and very little water in winter. I usually
water my cacti, once every 2-3 wks in the winter. Give it as much sun
as possible. In the winter, it likes to be in a cool room but not near
a drafty window (still give it alot of sun).
I hope this has been helpful. Jes

Were the white spot fuzzy and at the angle of the leaves? If they
were, then it was mealy bugs which can be removed with a swab dipped
in alcohol or a pyrethrum- containing insecticide.
Did the leaves drop? If they did you might have overwatered.

I have a rubber plant (Ficus Elastica Black Prince) as a house plant
in the UK. The Plant is around 1.5m tall and I'm rapidly running out
of ceiling space. Whilst I have nipped out the growning tip and
subsequent bud development from lower leaf axils, I would ideally like
to stimulate new growth from the base. Would anybody know wether or
not I would be able to use bud notching as used in fruit growing ?

A rooting hormone might help. It can be done but it might take a
while. If it hasn't rooted yet don't give it any direct sun, but when
it does a little direct morning sun is ideal.

They are very picky about the amount of light and water they get. If
the leaves (needle -like) are turning yellow (not brown) and falling
off, then it's not getting enough light. (or temp too high) If the
leaves are yellow and scorched at the edges, too much light or was
allowed to dry out. I had both of these problems. I put it in a east
window and it looks great and even flowered.
Water thoroughly, but allow to dry out a little between
waterings.
If the roots are hollow, I'd say it's bugs or you watered it
too much (root rot). More likely the latter.

Rubber plants are easily propagated at home by air-layering. This is
decribed in any good gardening book. I can't really describe how to do
it without using a diagram. Hope this helps!

This news group isn't the proper forum to post your question -
probably the reason you didn't receive any response. However, I'll
throw my opinion in here for what it's worth. Call a professional -
before you hurt yourself, or someone else or damage your property -
or worse. I live in Pennsylvania, USA - lotsa trees - also lotsa
horror stories from amatuers attempting their own tree removal.
Professionals can bring down your tree safely with no problems and
your life can probably go on unchanged - might not be so if you try
this one yourself. By your questions I can tell you don't know very
much about trees - all the more reason to forget the idea. Please
call someone.

Poplars will not die if you cut the tree. To kill a poplar you first have to
ringbark it, wait for a year, and -then- cut it down.

To ringbark, you remove the bark all around the trunk to a width of 20 cm or so.

Unless you ringbark you'll have a nice ring of new poplars growing up from the
roots, around the stump; ie. the makings of a really pretty fairy-ring glade, if
you let it grow for a hundred or so years.

Hi!

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me identify an odd species of
grape, ordered from Elk Mountain Nursery, in North Carolina, as
purportedly Vitis baileyana. I am almost certain that it is not. The
small, young leaves are deeply lobed in a very unusual pattern, looking
like a Rorscharch ink blot. The middle segment is somewhat lanceolate,
but abruptly constricted midway at a right angle. All leaves appear
glabrous. The upper surface is a dull green, and the underside is shiny
green. The forked tendrils occur at each node.

I've tried three different keys, and it usually keys out as V. riparia,
but no V. riparia I've seen has ever had leaves of this shape, and I
believe V. riparia should have a tendril at only two of every three
nodes.

I'm going to try to attach a scanned image of the leaf to this message.
If anyone can tell me what it is I have here, I'd really appreciate it.

Steve..

(If nobody objects, I'd like to post a few other images of plants that
have me stumped sometime in the future.)

if you like the tree to stay alive, search for root(s) and cut it about
2metres from house.

Sorghum A line problem
I have a male sterile sorghum line in which the seeds germinate 10 days
before harvesting. I would appreciate some help to solve this problem.
I have tried fungicides, herbicides at the end, fertilization, but nothing
worked. Do you have any idea how to stop this early germination ?.
Thank you so much.

I've noticed a glacous film on the elm trees in North Carolina and was

Hello all--

I'm new to this group, and have a question about taking care of a majesty
palm plant. It keeps browning on the tips of the leaves, and descending
down the whole leaf. I had a majesty palm that died starting this way
before. Can someone tell me the proper care of these plants?

Thanks so much!

As I told in a previous message, I have a tree (a poplar) whose root system
threatens to damage my house, and more likely the water pipe.
Cutting the tree down seems difficult because there is not enough place
around to make the tree fall down smoothly.
Anyway, my main concern is: Will the root system stop growing as soon as
the tree has been cut ? (I don't think so, though I don't know really.)
And is there a (chemical ?) means to definitely stop the root system from
growing, -killing the tree-, without damaging the nearby environment?

Thanks for your thoughts

Measuring Respiration of Yeast, Alaga, Bacteria, Insects, Reptiles.
We developed very sensitive O2/CO2 Respirometer which can monitor oxygen
consumption of bacteria or any substance (oxidation) at the levels of 0.2
uL
O2/hour.
It was also used to measure respiration of zebra mussels, water plants,
respiration of seed, insects, vegetables, olive fruits and cherries. It
was
also used to test bacteria growth in fruit juices and bioremediation rate
of oil spils ( Exxon
Valdez). 1 to 80 samples can be tested simultaneously over minutes or
months.
Optiona; sensor alow mesurements of CH4,H2S,NH3, H2,CO

Dear Jacques,
I did this work with good neighbor help recently removing a large sweetgum
tree. It had broken one sidewalk, the driveway in several places, damaged
irrigation waterlines, and threatened two other sidewalks and the home
foundation.
I treated the stump to avoid sprouts (suckers, etc) that form anywhere the
roots get the soil surface. This can be discouraged by using the same
herbicide (Brand:"Round-up", e.g.,) to the cut-off stump along the outer
edge at the cambium (just under the bark). I have had only one sprout about
twenty foot from the stump so far and it was easily killed with herbicide.
I cut down this large tree by first removing the large lower limbs leaving
a foot-hold to get to the next higher limbs. When high enough I topped the
main trunk about 2/3rds way up. The wind and natural weight distribution,
and how the cut was notched directed the fall with no damage except new
driveway stains. A neighbor had done this work recently and knew what to
do. Only experts can do this without damaging something or seriously
injuring someone. Almost everyone would advise you to hire the work done,
it is money well spent.
	I hope this helps.

Hallo all.
I've read in rec.gardens, about an inhibitory interaction between garlic
(Allium sativum) and aphids. I've found it an interesting matter, and I've
thought that someone might have accomplished some studies about, but I
haven't found any bibliographic references for further informations.

Does anyone know what is the garlic's active compound and what kind of
action does it have on aphids, or give me any bibliographic references ?

Thanks.

Don't know if your questions have been answered, but. Treatment of the
cut stump, or of the standing tree, with a herbicide will kill the tree,
roots and all. Stump treatment with any of the "brush control"
chemicals will kill the roots, and prevent sprouts. Ammate (ammonium
sulfamate) is one stump treatment. Follow the directions on the
container and you will not pollute the environs.

Best thing you can do is get a tree surgeon to cut it down in pieces
and then poison the whole root system. It will die off fairly quickly
once it's been poisoned.

You will not be able to partially kill the roots near your pipes,
they'll just keep coming back. Poplars are well-known for damaging
water pipes, so it your already worried about it get it felled.

Don't wait another 5 years so it's grown another 20 feet, it'll cost
you more to remove it then.

However you kill a tree you'll need to chop it down once it's dead,
otherwise you'll have lumps falling off it left right and centre. To
cut it down it'll need to be done in stages - poplars being quite tall
i'd reccomend getting someone else to do it.

If WP6.1 is like 5.1 (which I still use), you can nominate almost any
ASCII file as a supplementary dictionary. The US Department of Agriculture
has a complete species list (several Mbytes long) at
http://plants.usda.gov/plants/totselec.html.

Just add the two together, and there you are!

It is a long held common garden wisdom that insects and diseases are
problematic only on unthrifty or otherwise stressed plants. My own
experience validates this supposition to some degree but, lately I've
been wondering if there is any solid research supporting this thesis.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Hi,

I am a PhD student at the University of Singapore, cuurently working on
Rubia Cordifolia and need seeds of this plant. As far as I know these
plants are common in temperate regions of Africa and Asia.
I want to exchange these seeds for native orchids seeds of Singapore.
If interested please contact me.

Haw about a well known counter example: the periodic locust plagues on the
great plains? Grasshoppers would increase in numbers in an area to plague
proportions, changing their body form and eating _everything_ for miles
around over a year or three, swarming off to different spots as they ate
the last scraps where they were. Eventually the swarms would fall apart
and become mostly unnoticed solitary grasshoppers again--until the next
time. The eaten plant community would regenerate from the roots and from
the seed bank, but plenty of individual plants got hosed regardless of
health. (Including all of the crops planted by the new immigrants, who had
refused to believe the native american stories...). By simplistic
statistical arguments, local boom and bust cycles should not only happen
sometimes, but be the norm... Mind you, fiddling with the natural cycles
of complex systems is as likely to make them more prominant as less, as one
can discover in the wonderful but sometimes depressing _Dams and Other
Disasters: A Century of the Army Corps of Engineers in Civil Works_ by
Arthur Morgan.

I've cut down a few trees for the same reason! I live in Houston, TX
ant LOTS of pines 50-60 feet (20m or so) tall. It is not a fun task,
but if you do it, there are chemicals that disolve the stump. Here they
have a product called STUMP-BE-GONE (not a joke!!!!!) and it does what
it says. Stump is gone in 4-5 months. Sorry, but the can doesn't say
what is in it. If you leave the stump, you may have termite problems,
and getting rid of a stump is easier that getting rid of termites!!!!
hope it helps,

Are sure this will work? I just return from China and brought 5 lychee

out as a bonsai room plant (it freezes too much in Belgium during the
winter period). Yesterday I was searching the web and found a page which
had a fairly extensive information sheet (reference at the bottom) which
states that the seeds are only viable for one or two days and that using
seeds is not a reliable source for producing high yield trees. Is there
anybody around who has every succesfully grown lychee trees from seeds?

Yes - grown them from supermarket fruit stones once. Never had fruit,
and they are a bit touchy (expire) during long cold damp dark winters.
I expect in their own territory good productive cultivars are used.

And then there are the 17 year cicadas, that naturally function on a boom
or bust cycle. Last year was the big brood, whose name currently escapes
me. There were so many of them the ground under the oak trees was carpeted
with their cast off shells. Whenever the cicadas molted, there were about 2
dozen song birds hanging out in those trees, flying down to pick up a
cicada and then flying back up to eat it. Some of the cicadas escaped, so
the bird would simply go get another one. When the cicadas were dying, some
of them were attacked by very small birds. Ever seen a 3" bird try to eat a
barely alive 2" insect? As a result of that, and a mild winter, the bird
population is quite high now. That'll last until this winter.

At least the tent caterpillar invasion was two years ago. The cicadas just
damage woody plants. Large trees can handle it, but it'll be a few years
before the rhododendrons recover.

Carol,

The surface scales of this multiple fruit are just
the old flower parts. The seeds are embedded into
the inside of the fused fruits. If you have access
to ripe fruits, peel the scales, harvest the seeds
and (maybe) enjoy the fruit tissue. The seeds have
to be germinated immediately (viable only maybe 2
weeks outside the fruit!).

There was an interesting report about skototropism
in the seedlings (unique and unsubstantiated)...but
I'll pass on passing judgement on that.

Good Luck!

ross

Alex,

Your photo is very nice. The plant is NOT
poison ivy. It is a species of blackberry
(first guess and most-likely in my opinion),
blackraspberry, or a relative. Without flowers
and fruits it is difficult to be more specific.

The deeply pleated leaves with fine-toothed
margins and the presence of prickles are
the diagnostic features in the photo.

Did you use a digital camera, a video digitizer,
or scan of a photographic print?

ross

HELP!! My new polka dot plant (that's what the label said) is not doing to
good. It is one of those plants that has some leaves with white spots,
some with pink. I have it in a southern window and water it lightly twice
a week and add liquid plant food. What am I doing wrong?? I have other
plants that are thriving so I'm not a complete moron when it comes to
plants. Does this little one have any special needs?? Please respond as
soon as you can, Thanks!!!

My banana trees are alive and continue to grow but have a lot of brown
spots on the leaves. I moved them from right under the window (a lot of
direct heat) to a nearby counter and that seemed to help, but not
completly. They are watered (with added plant food) twice a week. Any
ideas on how to help them thrive??
