Howdy, I'm reposting this conference announcement, even though
the deadline for registration was the 31st of October. However,
it's NOT TOO LATE to receive the early registration fee rate, if
we RECEIVE your registration by next Wednesday the 10th of
November. Likewise if you are interested in presenting a poster,
it is not too late for that either. If you can EMAIL the abstract
to me by next MONDAY THE 8TH of November, we will place your
abstract in the conference program. Soooo, if your are interested,
then respond as soon as possible!

This year's Midwest Conference on Population Biology will
take place at the University of Kansas on 12-14 November 1993.
The MCPB provides an excellent opportunity for the exchange of
ideas within the broad scope of population biology, including
(but not limited to) genetics, ecology, evolution, and behavior,
and from both empirical and theoretical perspectives. Besides
the customary selection of outstanding speakers (see SCHEDULE OF
EVENTS), this year's program will feature a contributed poster
session (see POSTER SESSION for details) and a panel discussion
on the topic: "Reconciling "Good" Science with Conservation
Imperatives: Problems and Prospects."

LOCATION: All talks will be held in Haworth Hall, room 1005.
Posters will be displayed in the foyer.

PARKING: Free parking begins after 4:00 PM on Friday in all
Yellow Zones. We recommend the use of Lot 90, located just south
of Haworth Hall; it has many spaces and is convenient to the
meeting site.

FRIDAY NIGHT RECEPTION: Conference participants and friends are
invited to meet at the 2nd floor lobby of the Burge Union on
Friday evening from 6:00 to 11:30 PM. Late registration will

: In spite of rapid progress in the molecular arena,

Conference Announcement and FINAL Call For Papers

                         FROM ANIMALS TO ANIMATS

Third International Conference on Simulation of Adaptive Behavior (SAB94)

                     Brighton, UK, August 8-12, 1994

The object of the conference is to bring together researchers in
ethology, psychology, ecology, cybernetics, artificial intelligence,
robotics, and related fields so as to further our understanding of
the behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow animals and,
potentially, robots to adapt and survive in uncertain environments.

The conference will focus particularly on well-defined models,
computer simulations, and built robots in order to help characterize
and compare various organizational principles or architectures
capable of inducing adaptive behavior in real or artificial animals.

Contributions treating any of the following topics from the
perspective of adaptive behavior will receive special emphasis.

Individual and collective behavior Autonomous robots
Neural correlates of behavior Hierarchical and parallel organizations
Perception and motor control Emergent structures and behaviors
Motivation and emotion Problem solving and planning
Action selection and behavioral Goal directed behavior
    sequences Neural networks and evolutionary
   Ontogeny, learning and evolution computation
Internal world models Characterization of environments
and cognitive processes Applied adaptive behavior

Authors should make every effort to suggest implications of their
work for both natural and artificial animals. Papers which do not
deal explicitly with adaptive behavior will be rejected.

Submission Instructions

Authors are requested to send five copies (hard copy only) of a full paper
to the Program Chair (Dave Cliff). Papers should not exceed 10 pages
(excluding the title page), with 1 inch margins all around, and no smaller
than 10 pt (12 pitch) type (Times Roman preferred). LaTex template
available by email, see below. This is same format as SAB90 and SAB92.
Each paper must include a title page containing the following: (1) Full
names, postal addresses, phone numbers, email addresses (if available),
and fax numbers for each author, (2) A 100-200 word abstract, (3) The
topic area(s) in which the paper could be reviewed (see list above).
Camera ready versions of the papers, in two-column format, will be
required after acceptance. Computer, video, and robotic demonstrations
are also invited. Please contact Phil Husbands to make arrangements for
demonstrations. Other program proposals will also be considered.

I am the manager of a stockroom/lab facility which is responsible for
servicing the needs (chemicals, reagents, and equipment) of a Biology
department in a small university (14 - 16000 students). The facility I
manage supplies these items for over 80 laboratory class sections per week
with only 3 personnel while at the same time managing a service/checkout
window which is open for 6 hours each day (9:00am 'til 3:00pm). The
department has 20 PHD faculty and several part time MS instructors or TAs.

I seem to have found myself in the middle of a rather large debate with one
faculty member who insists that he/she have unlimited access (a key and
pass code) to the area I manage (which is currently under alarm and houses
well over $1,000,000 worth of inventory) because she/he needs supplies to
do unfunded research at hours other than those when the facility I manage
is open. The other faculty are either supported by grants or are not
actively involved in research.

IN AN EFFORT TO SOLVE THIS DILEMMA I NEED YOUR HELP!!!

     I SEEK ONLY DATA.

If you would be so kind.... please answer the following questions and e-
mail them to me directly so I may scientifically support my position.

I WILL USE NO NAMES OR ADDRESS IN MY REPORT, JUST THE DATA I COLLECT FROM

 THE QUESTIONS BELOW!!!

Three important items follow: BIOSCI archive searching by e-mail, the
BIOSCI FAQ, and the BIOSCI User Address Directory form. If you have
not yet listed yourself in our e-mail address directory, please take a
few minutes to complete and return the form below. If your address
information has changed since you listed yourself, please send us an
updated form.

**** SEARCHING BIOSCI ARCHIVES WITH WAISMAIL ****

E-mail users can search the BIOSCI archives by using our waismail
e-mail server. For instructions send the message

help

to waismail@net.bio.net. Leave the Subject: line blank. Other
methods of searching the archives via WAIS and gopher are described in
the BIOSCI FAQ.

**** BIOSCI FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) SHEET ****

New users of BIOSCI/bionet may want to read the "Frequently Asked
Questions" or "FAQ" sheet for BIOSCI. The FAQ provides details on how
to participate in these forums and is available for anonymous FTP from
net.bio.net [134.172.2.69] in pub/BIOSCI/biosci.FAQ or for retrieval
by gopher to net.bio.net, port 70. It may also be requested by
sending e-mail to biosci@net.bio.net (use plain English for your
request). The FAQ is also posted on the first of each month to the
newsgroup BIONEWS/bionet.announce immediately following the posting of
the BIOSCI information sheet.

**** BIOSCI USER ADDRESS DIRECTORY ****

Please take this opportunity to add your name and address information
to the BIOSCI User Address Database if you have not already done so.

Below is the address form that we would like each reader of the
BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups to complete and return if you would like to
be listed in our database. The database serves as a directory that
enables biologists, who are currently using (or even just reading) the
BIOSCI newsgroups, to look up e-mail addresses and other information
about our users.

The address database is reindexed nightly for WAIS and waismail access
(waismail is our WAIS e-mail server, more below) and will also be
available for access via other gopher sites if they wish to permit it.
The raw unindexed data is available for FTP from net.bio.net and is
atomized sufficiently to allow import into your local RDBMS should you
so desire.

Please carefully follow the instructions for completing the form
below and return it to either of the following two addresses
(whichever is more convenient for you). Thanks in advance for taking
the time to complete and return the form.

MAKING SURE THAT YOUR INFORMATION IS CURRENT

This notice will be mailed bimonthly to each newsgroup. You should
check our WAIS source or waismail e-mail server from time-to-time to
see if your address information is still up-to-date. Send the message

help

to waismail@net.bio.net for instructions on using waismail. Leave the

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Please enter all responses after the : on each line, leaving one (1)
blank space after the : (i.e., before the start of your text).

Please do NOT extend your responses past the end of each line (80
characters) or alter any of the field identifiers such as "first name: ".
Several lines are provided at the end of the form for comments, but,
please adhere to the line length restriction.

On the date: line, please enter the date in the DD-MM-YY format, e.g.,
05-05-93 for 5 May 1993. This line will tell others when the
information was last updated. Please be sure to include the 0's for
single digit days or months, e.g., 05-05-93, not 5-5-93.

Note that the "e-mail network: " line below is for specifying, e.g.,
"Internet," "BITNET," "EARN," "JANET," or whatever other network that
your computer may be on.

If you are uncertain about any field, please feel free to leave it
blank, but please DO NOT DELETE the field identifier from the form!

In the first field below, "New information or Update ...", please
enter "N" if this is the first time that you have registered in the
directory or "U" if you are correcting a listing that you sent to us
previously.

The comment: lines may be used for anything that you like but PLEASE
DO NOT DELETE THEM FROM THE FORM OR ALTER THEM. One suggested use is
to list the names of the newsgroups in which you participate. Please
use the MAILING LIST name (see below - the latest version of the list
can be requested from biosci@net.bio.net) instead of the USENET name
even if you don't participate by e-mail. WAIS might get confused by
the periods in the USENET names. This allows one to retrieve via WAIS
or waismail the list of participants in a particular group.

For example:

comment: ARABIDOPSIS PLANT-BIOLOGY BIONEWS

use these names below ---- NOT the USENET names below

The CANADIAN SOCIETY FOR THEORETICAL BIOLOGY (CSTB) invites you:

-- To share your interest in theoretical biology
-- Keep informed of conferences, schools, funding, books, science
policy, green issues, opinions, who's who and many other matters
of concern to those practicing or learning about theory in the
   biological sciences,
-- Gain a voice which supports Canadian research and teaching,

by becoming a member of the CSTB. Any person who is interested in the
study and furthering of the field of theoretical biology, or in the
application of the exact sciences to biology and medicine is welcomed
to apply for membership. Non-Canadians are also welcomed to apply.
Annual fees include subscription to the CSTB Bulletin. Subscription to
the new "Journal of Biological Systems" (started in March 1993) is
also offered through the Society at a special highly discounted rate.

The CSTB has recently disaffiliated itself from the Canadian
Federation of Biological Societies (CFBS), and has therefore come back
to its old and much cheaper membership rates. The CSTB is currently
planning to become affiliated to the French Society for Theoretical
Biology and the new European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical
Biology. Plans to provide our members with several additional benefits
are currently under way.

Any questions about membership should be sent to:
