A post-doctoral position in theoretical and/or experimental population
genetics of
extinction effects at the metapopulation level is available IMMEDIATELY at
the Institut
National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) Dijon, France.

The appointee will analyse the genetic consequences of local extinctions
within a
metapopulation. This work may involve either the use of computer simulation
(a program
in C language is already written ) and/or experimental demonstration be
applying standard
molecular techniques to an already running long term selection experiment
using
Arabidopsis thaliana as a model organism. The appointee will have to
address 2 related
questions: (1) how are polymorphisms at neutral loci, and those under
selection, expected to
evolve within and between populations according to the presence or absence
of local
extinctions within the metapopulation ? Under which conditions do the
degrees of
polymorphism at these two kinds of loci show parallel evolution over
generations?

Experience in molecular techniques (mainly microsatellite markers) and/or
population
genetics is necessary but prior work with plants is not required.
Particular attention will be
given to candidates who are able to carry out both aspects of the project.

CANDIDATES FOR THIS POSITION SHOULD
1) have obtained their Ph.D within the last four years,
2) not be French
3) NOT have already worked in France and
4) consent to receive no other grant during the tenure of this post-doc.

Duration of the fellowship is for 12 months (net income = 10000 French
francs / monthly,
taxes being already removed) (which roughly equals 1500 $).
INRA at Dijon is a large research centre (more than 400 employees) focusing
on several
aspects of biology / agronomy. Our lab. (with 35 people) is focusing on
dynamics and
evolution of weed populations. It has the required equipment for running
all the necessary
molecular biology techniques and offers good computing facilities. The
surrounding region
supports wide array of both cultural and outdoor activities, including its
famous Burgundy
wines and culinary excellence. Dijon is 1h40 from Paris by train.

Interested candidates should send or email a resume and a description of
research
experience to :

             11 - 15 September 2000, Paris, France

An International Conference organized by The International Society
for Adaptive Behavior (ISAB), in cooperation with the Chair of
Physiology of the College de France.

The objective of this interdisciplinary conference is to bring together
researchers in computer science, control, artificial intelligence,
robotics, neurosciences, ethology, and related fields so as to further
our understanding of the behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow
natural and artificial animals to adapt and survive in uncertain
environments. The conference will focus on well-defined models ---
robot models, computer simulation models, mathematical models ---
to help characterize and compare various organizational principles
or architectures underlying adaptive behavior in real animals and
synthetic agents, the animats. In addition, there will be sessions on
psychological issues, on the one hand, and on industrial applications,
on the other, of animat research.

Contributions treating any of the following topics from the perspective
of adaptive behavior will receive special emphasis:

Perception and motor control Neural correlates of behavior
Motivation and emotion Action selection
Learning and development Evolutionary approaches
Emergent structures and behaviors Internal models and representation
Collective and social behavior Characterization of environments
Philosophical and psychological issues Applied adaptive behavior
Autonomous robots Software agents and virtual creatures

Authors should make every effort to suggest implications of their work for
both natural and artificial animals. Papers that do not deal explicitly
with adaptive behavior will be rejected.

Submission Instructions

Submission instructions can be found on the conference Web site.
Submitted papers must not exceed 10 pages. Because the whole review
process heavily relies on electronic means, the organizers strongly
enforce electronic submissions of Postscript or PDF documents.
Otherwise, six hard-copies in traditional paper format must be sent
to the Program Chair, Jean-Arcady Meyer.

Computer, video, and robotic demonstrations are also invited for submission.
Submit a 2-page proposal plus a title page to the program chair. Indicate
equipment requirements and relevance to the themes of the conference.

Publisher: The MIT Press

Conference Chairs:
Jean-Arcady Meyer, Laboratoire d'Informatique de Paris 6,
Alain Berthoz, Collčge de France
Dario Floreano, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne
Herbert Roitblat, University of Hawaii
Stewart Wilson, Prediction Dynamics SA

Workshop Chair: David Corne, University of Reading
Tutorial Chair: Agoston Eiben, Leiden University

Important Dates (2000):
FEBRUARY 19: Submissions must be received
MARCH 31: Notification of acceptance or rejection (via e-mail)
APRIL 30: Camera ready revised versions due
SEPTEMBER 11-16: Conference dates

General queries to: sab2000@poleia.lip6.fr
WWW Page: http://www-poleia.lip6.fr/~sab2000

Finally, SAB2000 will be held a week before PPSN2000, the 6th International
Conference on Parallel Problem Solving From Nature
(http://www.inria.fr/PPSN2000). Both conferences will share several
specialized workshops and tutorials, which will be announced later.

This is a very short communication to explain the latest :

1.	To announce you and our colleagues at the Department of Biology and to
all those working in Evolution (Genetics, Systematics, Biochemistry,
Paleontology, Molecular Biology, Ecology, etc.) that the International
Journal EVOLUCIÓN BIOLÓGICA will renew its circulation beginning next
June-July 2000. Thus, I will be receiving MS at my new address :

Professor Hugo Hoenigsberg Ph.D. FLS

My e-mail is:
hoenisbe@academica.umb.edu.co

2.	The first number will have a special content :"The International Seminar
on Science- 2000" with invited papers in Mathematics, Biology, Medicine,
Physics and Chemistry. However, Biology and Ecological Genetics will have
priority and more dedication.

3.	Papers for EVOLUCION BIOLOGICA will be sent to a panel of experts to
decide on its suitability and desirability just as it was done before.
.
The first issue will be dedicated to the memory of Professor H.J. Muller,
the Editor's tutor and much remembered Professor at Indiana University.
