It seems to me that this law (if it is carried out for a long period of time) will have a dramatic effect on China's extremely large population, but at the same time it could have some adverse implications on China's population. One of China's biggest resources is numbers. Ex. China has a huge amount of people and in war times the more people you have the better off you are. China could loose a whole lot of its population in a relatively short amount of time. My Calculations: A=China's population today The one child-law will allow each couple (2 individuals) to have one child. So if everycouple were to have one child then the population would increase to A+A/2(we will call this value B) right. In one more generation (roughly 20 years) B will experience the same growth B+B/2 or 1.5A+.75A right. This would suggest that the pop. will continue to grow just at a slower rate. But, we forgot that of B only A/2 will be reproducing because A has already had there one-children. Refer to below. n=number of new people born Generation 0 (A groups reproduces) n=A/2; Total Pop.=1.5A Generation 1 (B groups reproduces) n=.25A; T=1.75A G 2 n=.125A; T=1.875A G 3 n= .0625A; T=1.9375A But wait what about deaths. We have not compensated for people dying. We will assume that the parental members of a generation dye after about 3 generations or 60 years and we will assume that people progenate around age 20. G0 same G1 same G2 same G3 By this time all of A should be dead (according to our general assumptions stated above). So @ G3 n is the same but T actually equals .9375A, which marks the first decrease in the population (according to our model). If we interpolate, we can see that this decreasing trend will continue. G4 n=.03125; T=.96875A-.5A (the n from G0)=.46875A This is an incredible drop in population. In 2 generations or 40 years the population dropped from 1.875A to .46875A.
