I am analyzing my data and have been trying Arlequin (for the mac and
PC) and suddenly realized that I may have to actually identify and
compute *by hand* the number of different haplotypes (estimated to be
over 100 at LEAST) AND how many of each haplotype appears in each of my
seven populations. i.e., I need to create a haplo-definition list...
from 15 markers, 7 populations with 50 individuals in each
population.AAARG! Is there a program that can do this for me? Or does
anyone know if this is really necessary to do in Arlequin? Their FAQ's
and Bug reports seem to suggest that.

For analyzing RAPDs, what program would you recommend?

Look forward to your reply - Lelia

Hi Lelia,

I did not ever used Arlequin, but when I looked for software I read its
manual. I think, Ican remember, that you can use such a haplotype
definition list in Arlequin, but you need not. You should also be able to
give in the bands for each Individual.

For RAPDS you can use PopGene http://www.ualberta.ca/~fyeh/
Lots of population genetic and systematic software you can find on this
page: http://evolution.genetics.washington.edu/phylip/software.html

Hope this will help you!

Bye

Christian

A Call for Presenters

Tracking 2000
The 2nd Annual International Tracking Symposium
October 6-8, 2000
Knight Camp, Hotchkiss, Colorado, USA

Sponsored by the International Society of Professional Trackers

Last October, Tracking '99 in Petaluma, California successfully brought
together approximately 100 trackers of all backgrounds from throughout North
America, and some special guests from across the globe. This first ever
event of its kind fostered understanding and stimulated communication
between ALL trackers; animal trackers and 'man trackers,' professional and
amateur; law enforcement, search and rescue, forensic investigation, nature
study, game hunters, naturalists, recreational, photo journalists, hunting
guides, trappers, survivalists, hobbyists, and others.

This year's theme is "Tracking into the New Millennium: Deepening and
Expanding the Practice of Tracking for all Applications." We expect
approximately 200 trackers, many of whom are leaders in the field, to
participate in this year's symposium.

Come and share your progress in tracking techniques, education, evaluation,
ongoing research, and what you or your organization has to offer the world
of tracking. This is a planned 2-day symposium that will include many
opportunities to listen to and talk with other trackers, as well as spend
time in the field demonstrating and examining tracks and sign.

For more information about Tracking 2000, as well to as the complete "Call
for Presenters" including required proposal forms, please visit
www.ispt.org/2000/

or contact Program Committee Chair Dan Rain (raindan@animail.net).

Dear Colleagues:

We are organizing a workshop on Astrobiology at Alife7.
The primary objective of this workshop is to
highlight some of the new areas of research that have emerged
form the new NASA Astrobiology initiative. We hope to have the
final list of presentations from individuals working in some of these
emerging areas of astrobiology soon. Since we also believe that there
is great potential for a more permanent interactions between
Astrobiology
and the A-life community, and hope to foster such interaction through
this workshop, we solicit a small number of shorter
presentations of work that might benefit (or has already benefited)
both communities.

Please send an abstract of your proposed presentation to:

        stassi@groucho.arc.nasa.gov

If your submission is accepted, be prepared to provide us with
a short, camera-ready copy of your presentation.

A more complete description of the workshop has already been posted in
the Alife7 web-pages:

        http://alife7.alife.org/workshops.shtml#Astrobiology

If you would like to learn more about Astrobiology, please visit
the NASA web-sites on the subject:

We are looking forward to receiving your contributions as well as your
feedback and suggestions.

I was surfing the web and discovered that the book
"The Bible According to Einstein" has been endorsed by
four Nobel laureates. "The Universe and the Teacup"
has two. Has anyone seen a science book
with four or more praiseworthy statements from Nobel
laureates on the cover? I am curious what is the record.

Dear all,
I was wondering if any of you happens to have the equation handy for the
calculation of exclusion probabilities in parentage testing. It should be a
function of the number of loci and the number of alleles, but my math is
really weak...
   Cheers,
                 Gregor
