FYI for potential graduate students in phycology or other area of
biology

GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS IN BIOLOGY AT LSU

A graduate fellowship is available for a Ph.D. student to begin in
January, 2001 in the Department of Biological Sciences at
Louisiana
State University (Baton Rouge, LA). The annual yearly stipend for
Board of Regents Fellows is $17,000, and tuition is waived.
Minimum
entrance requirements include a GRE (verbal and quantitative) of
1250
and undergraduate/graduate GPA of 3.5. In addition, letters of
recommendation and research experience will be used to evaluate
potential. Fellowship students are expected to devote essentially all
of their time to degree-related activities (no teaching duties are
associated with the Fellowship), although Fellowship students are
expected to contribute a few hours each year to outreach in local
elementary and secondary schools. The recipient must be a US citizen
or hold a green card. The Department of Biological Sciences has
trained about 30 fellowship students since 1988, and successful
students are in post-doctoral, research and development and faculty
positions throughout the US.

Please visit www.biology.lsu.edu for more information and a
pre-application

A lot of useful resources on http://www.molbiol.edu.ru/eng

In "Protocols" section you will find a large list of recipes of salt
solutions, laboratory buffers, media, antibiotics etc.
 http://www.molbiol.edu.ru/eng/protocol
In "Calculations" section there are a number of small programs,
which
will help in common laboratory calculations (weight - molar
conversion
for proteins and nucleic acids; [krpm] - [kg] conversion for
centrifugation; estimation of time for bacteria growth;
spectrophotometric measurement of nucleic acids concentration
and so
on).

BioMail is a program that simplifies and automates searching for
biological and medical literature. BioMail will search PubMed, the
largest publically available online database for biomedical journals,
using your search terms. BioMail then e-mails you the results weekly,
biweekly or monthly as you choose.

The site is predominantly in Russian. Here we translated only the
pages,

for which we did not find English analogues.
