I was very glad to see Dr Donaldson's critique. I think the title of the
article is unfortunate as it implies a negative attitude towards a curable
disease. Although clearly the life expectancy is not as great as for the
general population the overwhelming majority of cured patients survive at
least as far as they can be followed at the present time. Dr Donaldson's
fourth point is particularly pertinent. We are constantly modifying our
treatments based on results. In a disease such as Hodgkin's disease where
long term remissions are commonplace that means reduction of therapy where
appropriate and thus inevitably reduction of long term morbidity and
mortality will follow.
