I know this isn't really one of the topics of this list, but
I was wondering if anyone out there knows where I can find some information
on RNA containing unusual or modified purines and pyrimidines.

Peter,

Well, sure it is.

I don't have it with me so can't give a precise citation, but one of the
last few NARs has a compilation of modified bases with references to the
original literature.

Cheers,

Now that the silence has been broken, I'd like to ask: Has anyone
tried Qiagen's new RNeasy kit to prepare bacterial RNA for RNase protection
analysis? I wonder if those delicate bacterial messages survive well with
the cell pelleting and 5 minute lysozyme treatment steps. It certainly
looks like a timesaving alternative to the standard hot phenol/whole
culture procedures with their endless rounds of organic extraction and
alcohol precipition, but naturally I'm skeptical. So, has anyone tried
this? Any thoughts or predictions from those who haven't?

That is probably a good place to start. For the most part it is just
a compilation as was stated.

Could you specify what information? RNAs involved in translation (rRNA, tRNA)
are heavily modified.

It seems that I wasn't clear enough with my original request.
I was thinking about bases in ribozymes, self-splicing intron or viruses
to be specific. Thank-you for the information I have already recieved.

Dear Peter-
The only recent collective reference that I know an article in
NAR a couple of monthes ago. NAR (1994) vol. 22 2183-2196. The authors
report a summary and structures of all the known modified RNA
nucleosides. However, the article is somewhat limited in its scope.
Only the first characterization and synthesis references are given. But
it is a good place to start.

Good luck,
Jason.
