As part of our contribution to the Schistosoma genome project, we will be
placing genome project and related data on the Natural History Museum's
gopher server. In time we hope that this data (plus images) will also be
accessable through the Museum's WWW server.

Due to other commitments, construction of this server is very much a "spare
time" (Ha-Ha) occupation. This means that, with the exception of DNA
sequences, we do not have the time to go hunting out the data to put
on the server. We need your cooperation and contributions to make
this server a valuable reference/contact point for the Schisto
community.

We are looking for data under the following categories:

Dear Schisto researcher,

Dr Robert Bergquist (WHO, TDR) has requested me to announce the attached
message to all members of the Schisto newsgroup:

Subject: TDR Strategic Research: Call for Proposals

TDR INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR STRATEGIC RESEARCH GRANTS

TDR's Steering Committee on Strategic Research, which focuses on
genome mapping, pathogenesis and molecular entomology, will examine
research proposals when it meets 25-28 September 1995. In doing so, it
will give priority to proposed research that involves scientists from
developing countries or that provides opportunities for training. Grants
would be for two years. Applicants are encouraged to exercise restraint in
preparing their budgets.  The typical grant should not exceed US$40,000;
many of last year's grants were for much less than that.

Applications are required by 25 July 1995. This is a firm deadline
and no application can be accepted after this date.

Genome mapping

Research is needed on the development of low-resolution maps (1,000
units); new, cost-effective mapping technologies, universally accessible
data bases and data management programmes, regarding preselected Brugia
malayi, Schistosoma mansoni, S. japonicum, Leishmania infantum, L. major L.
puruviana, Trypanosoma brucei or T. cruzi.

Pathogenesis

Applications on Malaria, Schistosomiasis, Filariasis including
onchocerciasis, Leishmaniasis and the Trypanosomiases (African sleeping
sickness and Chagas' disease), are invited. Specific areas of interest are
mechanisms of protective immunity and pathology (cytokine interplay);
pathogenicity in relation to parasite and human genetic diversity;
virulence factors of parasites and vectors; animal models using mice
reconstructed with human cells or genes; development of transformation
systems; genetically reconstructed parasites for drug and vaccine
development.

Molecular Entomology

Research is needed on genetic and physical mapping of the Anopheles
gambiae genome; development of transformation systems based on transposable
elements and other genetic transformation systems for use in A. gambiae;
population structure and gene flow of A. gambiae in the field; genetic and
physio-ethological (ie. behavioural) factors involved in host-vector and
vector-parasite interactions.

                   SCHISTOSOMIASIS: Global epidemiology
                             CALL FOR REVISION

The WHO Expert Committee Report of 1993 endorsed the estimates of 200
million persons infected among 600 million persons at risk in 74 countries
(WHO, 1993). The recent attempts at estimating the distribution and
prevalence of schistosomiasis have been published since 1981.

The estimates of the number of persons infected and the number of
persons at risk has not changed since the mid 1970's. The dynamics of this
"static" data include 1) increased population growth in the most affected
countries, particularly in Africa; 2) increased risk in water resources
development projects, again particularly in Africa and 3) lack of resources
for control in the most affected countries. In relation to the total
population, the prevalence has decreased; in relation to the population at
risk, the prevalence has remained stable. This later statement is inaccurate.

The number of endemic countries has varied between 73 and 76 since 1980.
Montserrat was removed from the list of endemic countries in 1993. Japan and
Tunisia will eventually be removed since no new infections have been reported
since 1977 and 1984 respectively. The fusion of Yemen and Democratic Yemen
reduced the count as well.

There have been other changes reported in the WHO Weekly Epidemiological
Record - the official record of epidemiological change: S. mansoni has now
been reported in Guinea Bissau, Mauritania and Somalia. S. haematobium is
present in Sao Tome. S. intercalatum has been reported in Mali and in
Equatorial Guinea. The geographical extent of change is usually incompletely
reported.

WHO is now in the process of a complete reevaluation of the global
distribution of schistosomiasis using, if available more precise
geographically coordinated data from provincial and district level. Desktop
Mapping/GIS software will be used to manage the database.

We would like to encourage you to join WHO and its Regional Offices in
this effort of reassessment. Your comments and contributions should be sent
to Dr. Isabelle Nuttall at nuttalli@who.ch with a copy to me. Many thanks for
your collaboration. Schistosomiasis control is everybody's business!

This is an annoucement for a new WWW server containing
information about homeobox gene classification.

I set up a page that specificially deals with issues about
homeobox genes. As I expand that page, I will try to keep
updated information on the classification of the homeobox
genes and other relevant information on that site.
Obviously, any contributions to that page are welcome.

Dear users:

We are carrying out the study on the relationship between antibody
isotype reponse and resistance to Schitosoma japonicum reinfecion in
endemic population. This study will be focus on the detection of
specific IgE and IgG4 as well as FcERII in Eos cell. Unfortunatly, we
can not get the related HRP/Biotin labeled antibodies in short time
in Shanghai, China. So we are looking for some help. We also need Kits
for detecting soluable IL-4 receptor by ELISA and HRA-DQ/DR probe for
studying genetic factors. If you have any interesting or have related
information, please let us know as soon as possible. By the way, we
can provide human sera collected from the different endemic areas of
Schistosoma japonicum.
